The facility sits in a beautiful location, a mountain valley surrounded by snow covered peaks and a winter landscape at its finest. Unfortunately, the serenity is lost once you enter the pools. The locker rooms are average, clean enough, but the cashier could be trained to provide details that the lockers are operated with quarters to save the trip back down the stairs. The pools are hottest at the highest elevations but on average are at least 2-3 degrees colder than the signs indicate. The pools are filled with algae and in disparate need of basic maintenance and new filters as the floaters detract from the experience. The decks are sagging or cracked, the paint is peeling or absent, the rails rusted or rotting. Broadly speaking, there is very little capital investment / reinvestment which would go a long way. For the right entrepreneur it feels ripe for a little competition.

This place is poorly managed and overcrowded. There is an element of deception on how they define the capacity and sell the tickets based on that. They say the available capacity is based on the total area of the pools but this is very dishonest because their large pools are only tepid and lukewarm and no one wants to be in those. The hot pools are very small and are located at the upper level. When we where there, they had admitted 50 people and all those 3-4 small hot pools were packed with people. It was a very uncomfortable awkward situation where people could easily touch each others legs under the water. This was an embarrassing situation esp. when you go there to relax with your loved one or family members. The whole facility is run by a bunch of rude kids in their twenties. I mentioned this to the person in charge and asked for a phone number to speak with the manager. He responded the manager does not want to talk to anyone and if you are not happy do not show up next time. Also if you stay at the Spa for the night you are entitled to a morning and an evening session. The evening session was packed as I described earlier and the water was not clean. They empty the dirty water after they close the pool at night but then force people who stay at their spa to use the 8-10am slot in the morning when the water level is still very low (see the photo that I have attached). It is only after 10 am that the water levels at the top pools are sufficiently high. This was a terrible experience and not worth the time and the money.

Be advised to bring your own towel as they do not loan any or rent due to Covid. This was not mentioned in our reservation prior to coming so we had to pay $5 for each towel for my family of four. Also, our daughter will be 12 in a few months so if you come with children under 12 you are limited to the lower baths. They can be filled with families with smaller children. The customer service was horrible but the springs were nice and very relaxing.

A welcome oasis of invigorating and revitalizing warm water rejuvenating pampering amidst the backdrop of the Rockies.

Accepting that it is a historic, restored, retreat, it is easy to overlook that it is not the polished, modernized, commercial upscale spa expected by pampered purists. However, after days of hiking the 19 pools each varied in size and well posted temperatures provided a relaxing tonic for all aches and pains.

The locker rooms were fine, the cost was not exorbitant and the privilege of marinating your skin in healthy mineral water was blissful.

This is not your pristine spa nor is it priced like one, it is authentic, rustic, therapeutic and uniquely enticing.

Response from Debra Schaffer, General Manager at Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa
Responded Jul 16, 2023
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. This is going to be one of my favorite reviews. When people see the word resort they expect 5 star luxury , we are a historic place and all natural 100%, and the highest mineral content in the Rocky Mountains, its more like a retreat from the crazy world we live in today. Screenshot this review, your next visit is on me.

At $20 a pop the owners should really invest in improving the pools and hire some decent customer service staff. Outrageous price for outdated facility. Would rather drive to Steamboat even though hot Sulphur Springs is just 15 min drive. Ugh

This was exactly what we needed on a long road trip, we went really early before the crowd and the water made our skin feel great after. The inground pool was so cold and amazing in the hot colorado sun. We were only here for a few hours but it was great!
Bring bug spray!

Had a terrible experience with the front desk. Upon arriving I paid the $26 admission and then had gone into the locker room and had to pay to use the lockers as soon as I walk out I was told there was lightning and that you could not be in the pool. When the front desk was asked how long it would be closed he quipped “I am not a weatherman how should I know” when I asked for a rain check was told that they do not provide a rain check and then when asked for a refund he said they do not provide refunds. The person running the front desk was unprofessional and lacked any standards. When the manager arrived she did offer a day pass but at that point the frustration level was incredibly high as the person at the front desk repeatedly said the manager will not provide an alternative day pass that I just wanted to leave and never go back.

This place was horrible, a waste of time and money. They charge 26$ per person and there’s no cutoff. They just let people keep coming in. All of the pools are overcrowded, the changing rooms are the size of a coat closet and are disgusting. Please don’t come here.

We stayed for a night, early check in is available. Satff are very nice and hospitable. Room is clean. The place is outdated but The changing rooms and bathrooms is newly updated and clean. I rather pay $30 for hotsprings, with lodging is also at reasonable price for what it is being offered. For what are they charging is excellent including experience, I rather pay half the price than an updated resort and pay double or more for a small town feel. Overall I had a great time, I recommend it and we’ll comeback again.

We love Hot Sulfur Springs and visit several times a year. Please be aware that these are natural hot springs with no chlorination. (Water flows in and out so it doesn’t get stagnant.). Because of this you will see minerals and small bits of algae floating in the water.
