Situated in a prime Santa Monica location, Shutters on the Beach is often described as an inviting retreat, boasting an atmosphere enriched with live music and a welcoming staff. While the hotel's amenities, including a pool and on-site restaurants, generally satisfy guests, some feel the pool doesn't meet luxury expectations. Room experiences vary, with cozy decor being a highlight, though noise levels and upkeep are concerns. Service is predominantly acclaimed for being friendly and professional, yet some guests note housekeeping inconsistencies. Opinions on value are split, reflecting a range of guest experiences.

We just completed a 5 night stay at Shutters and had a wonderful experience. Despite the fact that we are in a pandemic and spa services as well as indoor dining were not available, Shutters did everything to make us feel well taken care of. The attention to detail and the service were excellent - even above and beyond expectations. Beatrice, the assistant manager, made certain that our needs were met and that our accommodations were exactly what we wanted. The room was immaculate, beautiful and large. It was stocked with excellent soaps, etc. The linens were "delicious" and the housekeeping service was excellent.
The Coast restaurant was very good and we found ourselves hosting family for breakfast, lunch and dinners. Whatever we ordered was excellent - from salads to fish of the day. They also had two outdoor areas for serving so, depending on the weather and time of day, we could choose our location. The pool area was beautiful and the attendants, while being gracious and respectful, adhered to social distancing and informed us of mask requirements. Pico 1, the more formal restaurant on premises opened outdoors during our stay. Shutters also had a reciprocal dining arrangement with Casa del Mar [a beautiful hotel next door] which we could charge to our room at Shutters. The beach was gorgeous and literally right outside our door.. The lobby and upstairs bar area we're accessible and elegant. My husband and I were delighted with Shutters and look forward to our next visit.

Shutters on the Beach is a great place. We stayed two nights and enjoyed our stay. From the time we pulled up to valet to the time we left, all employees were very friendly and attentive. Probably one of the best check in/check out experiences we've had at a resort. Very informative and everyone refers to you like they know you. Restaurants were great at Shutters and their sister hotel next door.

A couple of the disappointments were the pool area, lobby restaurant, and condition of rooms. For the price of the place the rooms are a disappointment and need to be updated. They are nice, but not for the price. We had a room on the top floor with awesome ocean view and two patios, but besides that the floor was splitting due to missing transition strip, stains in shower, and bathroom only had one sink. The rooms were well appointed, but just felt like they were behind the times compared to similar prices resorts we've stayed. The lobby bar and pool service had very inattentive service, and the pool bar stops serving food and drinks around 3:30pm.

I would recommend this place with the understanding that it has an "old" warm feel to it. We had a great time and would go back, but wish the rooms reflected the price point better.

The hotel is located right on the beach.
Rooms are very spacious and most of them offer a view (even partial) on the ocean.
they are well equipped (bath + shower, clean iron, board, slippers, bathrobes), even you will find a candle to have relaxing bath.
The restaurant for the breakfast offers seats right on the beach which is very pleasant, the service provided by the staff is excellent, and the food is good!
HOWEVER the restaurant inside (PICO 1) + the bar have room from improvement from the service point of view... I do NOT recommend

Checked into room, called for a wine key to open a bottle of wine. Had to call down four more times over the next hour. Still no update, so I went to the lobby, front desk assistant couldn't find one, took the manager coming back from her break to find it for us.

Completely unprofessional, the manager didn't even try to apologize for the poor service. Further you would think that in a hotel of this caliber and price there would be a spare mask and/or hand sanitizer in the room but there was not.

To be honest the general cleanliness of the room was questionable. The glassware in the room looked like it had been sitting there for months without even a dust. There was no notification in the room of cleanliness procedures.

When we check in we were told that the best place to dine and only restaurant in the hotel was great, however fully committed for the evening. Front desk agent booked Costa Del Mar restaurant. The service was horrendous. I understand the situation is difficult and they were trying to make do with the ballroom being the restaurant however there is no excuse for the general laziness of the service staff. I had to ask multiple times to get the table cleared and food came out cold. Not the service level one would expect for a $500 meal.

I was extremely disappointed in the entire experience. I cannot in good conscious recommend this as a luxury hotel to anyone.

If you’ve dreamt about spending the night in an overpriced pottery barn, this is the place. If you’ve been dying to try an escape room, try finding the lobby from your room in less than an hour. Need a massage? Reflexes good? Try dodging weight lifters as you run through the gym in your robes on the way to and from the spa. Our ocean view suite meant ignoring the parking lot on one side and trying to peak over the top of the building in front of us. Some of the ocean could be easily seen from the miniature balconies upon which 2 cabaret chairs nestled snuggly together. A pit stop for pigeons.
However, if sleuthing is your game, try finding the hidden overcharges in your bill. We booked a room at one price and was charged “the best available “ rate when we checked out, which was higher than what we were told on the phone. When you check in at the front desk, you are given what you think are 2 complimentary gift cards for drinks. Surprise, surprise... you are charged for them. They are disguised as a second resort fee plus tax. The staff is very friendly, but the management takes no responsibility for mistakes they make. My friends and I will never go back.

We’re staying here for three nights and although the hotel is in a good location on the beach, we have never stayed somewhere more loud. As other reviews have mentioned, when other guests talk in the hallway or slam their doors at 3:30AM, it sounds like the noises are occurring within your hotel room. The balconies are also VERY close together and we heard every word of our neighbors’ conversation late at night. The road outside is also very noisy. They need to improve their soundproofing of windows and doors because it is impossible to sleep through the night. I would give up the location and stay elsewhere in LA before coming back here. Although reception was extremely kind and provided an amazing check-in experience, service in the restaurant and lobby bar was lackluster. The décor also needs a refresh. Overall a disappointing experience that was definitely not 5 star.

Astonishingly attentive service in a beautiful property. There were no flaws with our experience at Shutters. We will stay again soon because the value for the amenities and service are top shelf, as is the location (close to anything you want to walk to and the house car service helps for longer distances.)

We had our wedding over the weekend at shutters. We travel to luxury hotels all around the world and this place was really first class— Not just for us but also for our guests.

Our room (or Santa Monica suite) was ready for an early check in. It had a lovely and unexpected view of the beach and Ferris wheel from the bedroom. They left us lovely wedding festivities. The room was immaculately clean and well taken care of. We were even given the rare proper turn down service (with bed mats, slippers, and all).

Our guests also liked the rooms they had booked. I will say (ourselves included) noise is a problem. Several guests in our block mentioned street noise and we heard it too. I hope that shutters can do a sound proofing during the next remodel to fix this.

The customer service was unbelievable. Apparently one of our parents was complaining in the lobby. To be sure that it wouldn’t detract from our wedding experience, they upgraded them to a different suite. It was so nice of them to take care of every possible relative so well so we could focus on us or just getting married. From the valet to the woman who deli where’s our breakfast…all amazing.

We were so busy with the festivities that we didn’t really spend time at the pool or beach. We heard good things from our guests though!

Lastly, just a huge shout out to the banquet staff and planning teams! Bruce and Alessandra are class acts. They provided us with exceptional planning service from start to finish— constantly responding to emails quickly with kind attitudes. We are so appreciative of all the work they did for us to make the perfect event happen. All our guests loved the wedding and want to come back to plan their weddings at shutters too!

Shutters is not a 5 star hotel. And while it is not a bad hotel by any means it is just not right to charge customers 7-800 USD a night for what seems like a suped up Best Western.

While our room was nicely decorated it was essentially “ below ground” located below the pool terrace. This needs to be specified before being hoodwinked into a 7 day non refundable deposit / cut off reservation for one of your basic rooms at that astronomical rate.

The biggest problem for us was not our room however, but was that thr common areas are run down, dirty and tired. The restaurant service is slow and sloppy, and the pool area is filthy and overcrowded. Add to this two loud and consecutive evening “events” also occupying hotel space that room paying customers would count on being able to use but could not , and the whole thing amounted to a disaster.

The pool terrace tiles were so dirty that I did not even want to spend time there. Overall the place feels so grungy. The front terrace restaurant was similarily unkept with leaves everywhere, stained cushions, and an overall tired aspect that frankly can not possibly warrant the sort of room rates you charge.

My husband and I felt totally ripped off as we were enticed by the lovely but now misleading website photos of the pool area and public spaces that frankly are just sub par and sad.

One has many options in LA for hotels rooms at the rate Shutters charges a night. My advice is to seek better value for money where service is top notch and the common areas are chic and glamorous worth of their stars and where the rooms are 5 star quality as well.

Stayed at Shutters with a group of friends for an event. We all paid the same price for rooms, but our room was on the first floor with a fabulous view of the parking lot and public beach access right outside our windows - should have been at a discounted rate or given the option at check in.

Front desk staff was very accommodating and pleasant (even though our room wasn't ready until 5pm - but they did comp us 2 drinks and apps), but wait staff in restaurants was the opposite - almost felt like we were putting them out....and it took forever to get food out.

Rooms were dated and beds were hard and uncomfortable. I've stayed at many 5 star resorts and this is a 4 at best. There are better options!

I can't say really. Our room, like many, overlooked the pool, but we didn't seem to hear much noise. The beach is right there, very walkable - also maybe a good place for kids.

What is the difference between a Superior and a Deluxe Room?
Answer from johnnnita
Napa, California2,409 contributions306 helpful votes
As with other hotels, generally the difference is in location/view, size of room, amenities offered. Of course, the price goes up as all this improves. More to your question, our experience with Shutters was if there is availabilty, if you reserve a specific category of room, and when you arrive you still don't like it, you can request a different room with no increase in price. If occupancy is high though, they may offer a better room at an increase in rate. I can't recall which category we booked, but it was probably the least costly category. You can go on their website and research what each category offers.

I believe you have to specify that you want to have the twin bedded rooms. I usually call the hotel directly, and then ask them myself which room I would like to have. Last time I booked, I did it through a travel agent, which led to me getting another type of room. I recommend calling directly.
