【FUJIYA HOTEL GRAND OPENING ! (July-15-2020)】 Founded in 1878, Fujiya Hotel is one of the oldest in Japan. Many famous people from around the world have visited and stayed at Fujiya Hotel. Fujiya Hotel offers four types of accommodation: THE MAIN, COMFY LODGE & RESTFUL COTTAGE , FLOWER PALACE, and FOREST WING. THE MAIN, COMFY LODGE & RESTFUL COTTAGE, and FLOWER PALACE are all registered as important cultural assets. Here in Hakone you have the opportunity to stay in architecturally significant buildings, where you will receive the highest level of service honed over our long history. Our hotel is located in Miyanoshita, in the middle of the Hakone area, making it a convenient base for touring around the region, whether your interests are sightseeing in Hakone or shopping at the Gotemba Outlet Mall. Some of our famous guests include Charles Chaplin, Helen Keller, John Lennon, Prince Albert (later George VI) of the UK, Prince Charles, the Swedish Crown Prince and his retinue, the Emperor Showa, and the former Emperor and Empress.
Star ratings are intended to indicate the general level of features, amenities, and services to expect. This property is classified according to Giata.
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
We booked a single night here and then ended up spending three nights because one simply wasn’t enough.
Highlights include the property itself - it’s stunning and such a piece of history with incredible period details throughout. The onsen on the top floor of the forest wing is wonderful. The women’s area has so many amenities and the whole nudity thing is just a non-issue. There are two large soaking tubs, a small cold plunge pool and sauna. Half of the onsen is inside and the other half is outside but with plenty of privacy screens. The shower area has private stalls to utilize before entering the onsen and then again for afterwards (with body soap, shampoo, conditioner, hairbrushes, lotion, oil). It was in the mid 90s (Fahrenheit) during our visit, and the onsen was still refreshing and a true highlight.
The outdoor pool was also enjoyable, again, because it was hot outside! The path up to the outdoor pool is made of stone and I would not recommend it for anyone with mobility issues.
The staff is also a highlight of the historical property and they are more than accommodating, professional and polite. They were happy to provide car service to the local train station both to drop us off and pick us up (the very local one though (perhaps .6 miles away, I can’t remember the name of it)).
Our room was in the forest lodge wing, very spacious with a private onsen. Beds are definitely on the firm side!
There is also an indoor pool which was clean. Overall, there are lots of spaces to relax, rejuvenate and just slow down. Highly recommend.
(and there is a 7/11 very nearby doe fast, convenient food).

Everything was wonderful except the food, which was terrible. Had the food been good, it would have been 5 stars but it was SO bad that it had a big impact on our stay.
The positives : the staff are lovely, welcoming, helpful, gracious and so kind. They deserve 5 stars
The onsen is beautiful with a spectacular view, open early and late. This is a big draw card.
The location is great - bus stop and train station in close walking distance for east access to Gora, Hakone etc.
The negatives: the food from room service was expensive and almost inedible. We had no intention of ordering room service but everything closes by 8pm and the few restaurants that don’t were fully booked, so we took a punt and ordered in. Bad idea. The wine was good but very expensive, the food was overpriced and possibly out of a packet? It was our worst meal so far in Japan. It’s such a shame as they could really get this right and it would then be a fantastic hotel. We ate at the Riverside restaurant as part of the Indigo hotel the night before and the food was fantastic. Fujiya needs to look at the quality of their food offering as it was such a huge let down.
The wine bar is lovely but it only has one of each wine option (red, white or sparkling with no choice) so if you don’t drink spirits or beer, there is not much for you. We would have liked to sit and have a glass of wine but the choice of just “red” or “white” did not inspire confidence. It’s strange as all of the other locations in the hotel have a wine list.
Air con in the bedroom was not really adequate.
Summary : Overall, it’s a lovely place to stay and has a lot of wonderful points but plan ahead with restaurant bookings and timings so you don’t have to eat here.

Heritage hotel with beautiful and spacious room and good service! The breakfast was wonderful and the onsen was relaxing. The hotel also offers free shuttle services to the nearby station and is perfect for Hakone! They charge extra for early check in (i.e. before 3 pm) but you can of course leave your baggage in the hotel.

Really nice old hotel, but the service is lacking. Very little options for kids and they seem to deprioritise guests experience.
For example, we wanted to have a beer in the cafe. Even though they were open, they said they were closing and wouldn't serve a drink, leaving the only option as the bar, which kids aren't allowed. THEN, they wouldn't allow to take the beer to cafe either, even though they serve there just minutes before.
Illogical and infuriating. They charge premium prices and then seem to go out of their way to limit the guest experience.

We had a wonderful 2 days in the Hakone Area. The Hotel buildings are really beautiful, as are the gardens and the Onsen. These look out over lush verdant forest and it is extremely relaxing environment. The downside is that the hotel interior is somewhat stuck in the 1970's with a lot of red velvet decor. It is quite formal inside, so dining in wasn't an option for us in jeans and track pants and trainers. I expected more "japanese" interior decor. Our room in the main building was comfortable, bar being outdated, it was great.

Fascinating hotel, with a charm related to its history and heritage. Beautiful premises. Excellent onsen, spacious. Confortable lounges to pause. We could not access the outdoor swimming pool, die to bas weather, but it was very nice. We had a stunning ans spacious room facing the wood: so relaxing. Soft and large bed. They provided jinbei and kimono. Breakfast (both western style and Japanese style) was outstanding. Elegant, quite formal service. But very effective and caring: they could quickly retrieve the luggage one friend of ours forgot on the bus on our way to Hakone. My limited remarks are about poor English of staff and the gym (very small, I had difficulty to do my yoga practice). Remarkable hotel, strongly recommended

It was a rainy day in Hakone, the last day of my trip. I did not like the idea of being outside juggling my luggage and umbrella so I found a lovely refuge at the Fujiya Hotel. Being a Saturday the restaurants had a long wait for the table, so I went to the tea lounge. The waiter was kind enough to wipe my wet luggage after showing me to my seat. Although I was not a staying guest I felt they gave excellent service. Next time I would like to stay. The rooms look beautiful, and the surroundings are steeped in history. Access is convenient from Hakoneyumoto station. About 15 minutes bus ride, and the stop is right in front of the hotel.

Superb historic hotel. Charming and grand. Very spacious and comfortable rooms and very good service. Some might say it’s a little ‘tired’, but a lack of modernisation adds to the charm for me. Certainly everything was clean and functional.Onsen is lovely too. And got a little bit of a ‘Wes Anderson Vibe’! Highly recommended, and pretty good value - at least right now with the weak yen.

Beautiful historic property. Very attentive staff. Dinner in the French restaurant was wonderful. Real wine list. The view from the spa was incredible. Be sure to walk around the property. The picture of the mustache club was amazing along with the sculptures of the men with the mustaches. There is a museum on sight that was eye-opening. Truly a must stop if you have the time.

Japanese hotels are usually very restrictive about usage of their facilities for non-guests, beside there is no facility use fee system in the Fujiya Hotel, as far as I remember.
The so called "traditional hotels" are more restrictive than others, and possibly Fujiya Hotel is such case.
Sorry for that.
QuietBrazilian
I think so. They have a few different dining options there and if you eat Japanese, gluten free is not too hard. Tricky one is the soup stock they use in Japan, since fish stock is used commonly.
As the others have said, there are restaurants at hotel .... but we found it expensive ($8 charge for bread) and not very good. The dining room is impressive though and staff try their best to do silver service. There is a small tempura restaurant and a simple restaurant with pasta etc within a few hundred metres uphill. There's a Lawson/ 7-11 convenience store just down the hill.
The Hotel has not Shuttle bus service from Dodawara station.
To get the Hotel, at first, you go to Haokone-Yumoto, both bus or train are available. Then you go to Miyanoshita station, both bus and mountain train are available, too. From Miyanoshita station, You walk 500 m along the street. I prefer to use mountain train.
