Large ryokan located easy walk from railway station. Has a beautiful Japanese garden and lovely clean outdoor ( and indoor) onsen. We stayed in traditional Japanese room which was a bit challenging with rice pillows! While it has an older vibe the garden and onsen makes up for it. We were there during a quiet period so not sure how it would feel during weekends or holidays. As it is a large faculty the facilities could get crowded.

Was pondering what to rate Yoshiike. For foreign visitors who are new to ryokan culture, want to enjoy it with locals speaking minimal English and having western understanding to help balance the experience, yes, it shall be 'Excellent'. For visitors who have been visiting ryokan and onsen, enjoying the famous and most respectable Jap service, then Yoshiike is just 'Good or Very Good'.
Booking process : We booked a Mountain View Tatami Room directly from Yoshiike's Jap site. The other languages were directed to JAPANiCAN, but we found that the prices in Jap site were cheaper, about 12% less for our room. The site also includes many more packages (eg. seasonal package, day-only onsen+meal) and other detail information like room price for different day of the week and clear walking directions with pictures (www.yoshiike.org/access/). Can be difficult booking directly from Jap site if you don't know Jap characters or Kanji, or even after translation using Google or Bing. It is a 3 step booking process with the 2nd step sent via an auto generated email (also in Jap). You then need to click on the link in the email to generate a reservation code and wait patiently for final email confirmation. If you click the link twice, it will generate 2 reservation codes and you are expected to pay for it! If you don't click the link, booking is not completed and you may arrive without a room reserved. In our case, no payment needed until we check-out, but some packages may need advance payment with more online steps. We emailed Yoshiike some questions and they replied well in English the next working day.
Room : We booked for 1 night in Jan. Figured all leaves were gone and all buds still waiting to bloom in winter, so no point looking at a bare garden. We were given the highest 6th floor with a not-too-bad mountain view room. Spacious and clean with large windows. Lighting is '60-70s style and does make the room look tired. We usually just convince ourselves it is part of the rustic and traditional experience. Their 2 big fabric arm chairs near the windows are the most comfortable chair we had ever sat on! It felt like a day bed made of futon and hugged you comfortably. Had nice nap on it after our onsen visits. There is a safe, big enough to keep 11" notebook and SLR camera. The fridge filled with drinks and beer (chargeable). Hot water and tea are complimentary. We had a good stroll in the beautifully maintained garden while waiting for our checkin at 2pm. No doubt, one MUST book the Garden View room during spring and autumn, but we are happy with Mountain View room in winter.
Onsen : The most valuable asset of Yoshiike is their 5 onsen - 1indoor+1outdoor for men; 1indoor+1outdoor for women; 1 private indoor onsen. With 2 outdoor onsen available separately for men and women, it means everyone in your company can go fully enjoy their respective onsen at the same time. Some ryokan rotates 1 outdoor onsen beween men and women on different day or time. For women, the outdoor onsen is directly linked to the indoor onsen. Unfortunately for men, the outdoor and indoor onsen are separate. That means you need to go to the indoor onsen first to bath and go to the outdoor later. We visited onsen 3 times during our 1 night stay : after checkin, after dinner, and after breakfast before checkout. We never use the bath in our room (yes, no shades or curtains in the bath but it's really just facing the mountain). In the indoor onsen, there is always a bathing area with all the amenities (shampoo, conditional, shower gel, facial cleanser, shaving cream, shaver, etc) where everyone is supposed to clean themselves before stepping into the onsen. After onsen when you return to the dressing area, there are facial cream, body lotion, hair dryer and other amenities to beautify yourself. For couples or family, it's nice to try out the private indoor onsen together, or use it if you are shy. There are English instructions in Yoshiike if you want to know what to do. At the exit (also the entrance) of all the 5 onsen, there is a common area where you can sit, drink tea (complimentary) and wait for your company. This is also where the small lockers are so you can store valuables (eg. room key, phone) before proceeding into the onsen. Unlike most of other ryokans we visited, you need to bring the big and small towels from your room to the onsen, and then return to the room again. If you plan to use onsen often, ask for a room in the block nearest to the onsen, else it could be a long walk (in Yukata and slippers with towels on hand!). On the other hand, it will also be the furthest from lobby. Take note that checkout time is 10am. After that it cost 5000yen for 1 hr! Plan the time properly if you want breakfast and onsen in a short morning, or you can always add a day-only onsen+meal package which cost 4000-6000yen pp depending on the meal you select.
Meals : Many have been said about the wonderful Kaiseki cuisine in TA. Just want to add that the meal will come on-time. That means, if you change the timing last minute, whether later or earlier, it will cause some trouble to their process but they will try their best. The nice lady tried to name the ingredients and always gave us heads-up what is next step, eg. what is serving next, how to get the plates cleared, when to sent someone to lay the futon or store the futon in the morning.
Location : We actually chose to stay in Hakone-Yumoto first before we choose Yoshiike, since it is the shortest time (and cheaper route) from Tokyo for a proper ryokan and onsen visit. Took 8.43am Express train from Shinjuku Odakyu Rail and reached around 10.30am, total 1150yen pp. Take Odawara Line to Odawara station, then change to Hakone-Tozan Line to Hakone-Yumoto station. There is a Tourist Information Centre opposite the station next to the bus stops incase you need help on directions and map. Did a little shopping and walk around for 1.5hr, mostly local food and specialties, had lunch then went to checkin at 1:30pm. Yoshiike is just at the end of the shopping street. Can reach in 7 min without shopping, though the interesting shops will temp you to stop. There is a convenience store 7-11 near the end of the street. The street actually continues for cars, just no more shops to visit anymore. Turn left into a side charming street that leads to a short red color bridge. You will see Yoshiike almost immediately a few steps after crossing the bridge. There is an authentic looking restaurant on the left side after the short bridge, popular among locals and good to try lunch there. If you have time, exlpore further up along the road after Yoshiike. The river is marvellous and the charming scenery is worth the up-hill walk.
Service : Everyone is professional, helpful when approached and always smiling - from the man who check us in, the lady who led us to the room, explained the layout of the ryokan and onsen, suggested different sizes of Yukata to us, another lady who laid our tables during dinner and breakfast, the man who expertly laid and stored our futons, the onsen care takers who offered us a glass of cold o-cha, to the young man who ran out of the door on his own will to take a picture for us when we left (nice touch at the end!).
Due to limited time, we can't go further up into Hakone for better ryokan and onsen. Still, no regrets choosing Yoshiike. A fabulous time enjoying the sumptuous dinner and relaxing in the beautiful outdoor onsen. What Yoshiike short of is the unique passion and missing that extra mile which is commonly found in top ryokans. Those looking for fresh and modern room will be disappointed too though you can also consider their western style room (might not include in-room dinning experience). The garden will be the WOW factor when in season. Strongly recommend Yoshiike for foreign visitors who want to try ryokan and onsen. Pls do read up on ryokan culture and onsen etiquette first. It is not easy to find English speaking traditional ryokan and Yoshiike offers good balance experience overall in easy-reached Hakone-Yumoto.

My husband and I stayed at Yoshiike Ryokan one night during our JTB tour of Japan. I am conflicted writing this review because there were positives and negatives relating to this visit. Never having been to Japan before it was wonderful to experience walking into our accommodation which simulated a traditional Japanese room complete with tatami mats, rice paper screens and Ikebana arrangements. It was fun to dress in the Kimonos, socks and shoes provided for our dinner and the Onsen was a must-do experience. The gardens we could see from our window are lovely and I was disappointed not to have time to wander through them. However, the food provided for dinner was a VERY challenging (and I'm not a fussy eater) 'traditional' Japanese meal and to my horror breakfast was almost a carbon copy of dinner with even more unusual seafood dishes. I now understand why Western Style restaurants are so popular throughout Japan. The other challenge was not so much the futon which had been laid out for us on the floor while we were at dinner but the small pillow provided which was filled not with feathers but rice!! Unbelievably uncomfortable and not at all conducive to a good nights sleep. If you are travelling to Hakone by train and staying here it would be advisable to have any large suitcases shipped to your next destination and carry just a small overnight bag or backpack as the walk from and to the station is at least 1 km. It was an experience worth doing but not one I need to repeat in a hurry.

My friends and I stayed at Yoshiike March 20, 2024 and received truly poor service from the moment we arrived. The gentleman greeting guests at the door rushed us to front desk, which was fine but felt unnecessary as we were just gathering our bearings before checking in. A second gentleman at the front desk checking us in had body odor so bad that is made us nauseous. I don't know how you can overlook something like this when you're the primary person working with guests. We asked about dinner and breakfast reservations at their restaurant and, without so much as a glance at a list or computer to confirm the latest reservations, told us "it's not possible." OK, fine. We go to our room, which was mostly okay. However, there was a stench of urine inside the bathroom like it hadn't been cleaned properly. We start googling food nearby, but many places aren't yet open or don't have online reservations available or we're just having trouble translating (we're two Americans and a Brazilian - however one of my friends has a base-level understanding of Japanese. That's important for later). We then call service line to reconfirm that the restaurant was full or ask for recommendations nearby. She (new person) confirms the restaurant is full and asks my friend to come back to the front desk to speak about recommendations. By the way, they've placed us in the furtherest possible room away from the front desk - which, whatever... but it's a bit of a walk. He goes to talk to the women from the phone, but there is a person ahead and he waits in line. Mr. Stench returns asking my friend what he wants and he politely tells him that he's waiting to speak with the attendant (woman). He says we don't have any recommendations, which is really odd because that is pretty basic customer service for any hotel literally anywhere in the world. My friend tells him he's going to wait to speak to the attendant. Mr. Stench tells the woman in Japanese not to help him. My friend hadn't yet let on that he can understand Japanese, but now tells him and Mr. Stench is very caught off guard. He changed his tune immediately, but it's too late. We're so done at this point. This was just an unnecessary escalation and truly odd given how politeness is core to Japanese culture. We found accommodations on our own after popping into a few places and just had breakfast from a konbini. There are so many other options in Hakone. We will never recommend or return to Yoshiike Ryokan.

The outdoor bath was heavenly, surrounded by cherry blossom and camelia flowers and with plenty of different places to sit and have a soak. There facilites are spacious and clean, including good quality cosmetics.
Our Japanese style room had a beautiful view out onto the amazing garden, including the huge white cherry blossom tree and small paths around the lake, tea house and different levels of the garden. Walking around the garden and taking in its beauty was a real highlight of our trip. The room was large and comfortable. Dressing gowns and towel for the bath is included.
The restaurant itself it modern, and not much to look at. But it is very large, so you have your own space. The colours, flavours and presentation of the degustation was excellent. Dinner and breakfast is served. There is a separate lounge with tea, coffee and soft drinks available.

I don’t know if this place went through a renovation or not but I was reading the reviews from a few years ago and it was not like that at all. Room was big and clean and modern. Very nice bathroom, shower, etc. the sleeping area was big. Could sleep 4 adults comfortably at least. The one bad thing was the rice pillows! The pillows are made entirely of rice it seemed and they were very uncomfortable. So bring your own! If possible. Price is a bit high. Slightly less than $400 USD, but that includes full dinner and breakfast and 3 drinks per person. Alcohol included. The dinner was..l interesting. Very Japanese style, did not know half of what I was eating and some was good and some was spit out worthy. But definitely a unique experience. The staff was amazingly friendly and accommodations and helpful. Impeccable service. For that alone it would be 5 stars. People there are so very nice. Nice onsen/ spa areas. Womens area includes 4 pools. 2 inside 2 outside. They give u full robes and what not to wear into there and there’s tea available in the spa. They are renovating the outside so the front isn’t very aesthetically pleasing. But the gardens are gorgeous. Would recommend.

Onsen was being cleaned in the morning of checkout meaning that I couldn’t use it.
It’s not well mapped out on how to get to reception and rooms etc so it’s a bit of a maze.
Breakfast was amazing and the garden was gorgeous.
Overall not worth the money.

Had an amazing experience from the minute my wife and I stepped onto the property. Created at the door with tea and towel. Staff was attentive and cared about the details. Offered to show us best views of the garden and take pictures for us while in the space. Traditional rooms were clean nice and onsen was truly amazing. The traditional dinner and breakfast was very good. Highly highly recommend. Was also able to see views of Mt. Fuji from the main garden space.

The check out time is 10am, but they enter the room on 9am while I'm taking the shower... For checking and lock the mini bar, took away the tea set, and the insulation pot. It's a very rude service. Will not come again.

Our stay at the Yosshiike Ryokan was shockingly bad and the worst ever out of the many hotels that we stayed at in our lives that involve a lot of travel. We arrived to be greeted in a hostile and ironic manner by a male staff at the reception who did not wish to answer my questions re: the procedures to book their spa - he just pointed me to the other staff member who took us striaght to our rooms without any explanation as the latter staff did not speak English. Our room was very dated, with numerous stains on the carpet and walls, lots of scratches and the whole place did not seem clean. There was no curtain at the bathroom or its window so we could not have a shower or otherwise the whole resort would have seen us from outside ! We went outside into the garden thinking at least this looked fairly nice - until we saw there a long snake that we were nearly bitten by.. unbelievable in a ryokan that costs over 33,000 yen per night. The food arrived, it looked and tasted disgusting - we can appreciate unusual dishes and had lots of goof traditional Japanese food but this was not edible and did not look fresh. We went to the spa but there was no way to book that and there was a long queue outside so we gave up. Overall, a terribly unpleasant experience so please save yourself the money and never stay at the Yoshiike Ryokan which is decaying away.
