The Protea Hotel Dar es Salaam Courtyard is often celebrated for its exceptional amenities, which include a pristine pool and effective mosquito prevention, contributing to the overall comfort of guests' stays. Its traditional style and inviting atmosphere are enhanced by a lovely garden that travelers find appealing. The hotel's prime location near the city center and ferry services is a significant convenience, as noted by guests. I can’t say enough about how great this hotel was during our stay. My wife travelled for business and I was along for the ride. The food in the restaurant was great. The breakfast that was included with the stay was top notch (omelette bar plus full, full Buffett). The outdoor pool was refreshing and very well kept. But the staff, the staff was wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. They would get drivers that made you feel safe and the staff even gave you their contact info so you could call the directly for a ride home from the market. I’m normally leery of exterior entrances, but all rooms opened into the interior courtyard and was 100% safe and secure. Even down to the laundry service, everything was neatly folded and clean.

We stayed at the Hotel for 11 nights mid August as a couple first and then had friends join us. Our first impression was very good regarding the pretty courtyard and the general exterior. Our room was on the 2nd floor. It was moderate size, but could be a bit arier.
Breakfast was included in our package and we really enjoyed fresh coconut water and other fresh juices along with a good spread of Indian and Continental items, such as roti, Dal, chicken/beef sausage/eggs of all types/sauteed vegggies etc.
We had gone for a religious purpose so didn't use any hotel amenities but we happy with the cleanliness and sanitizing standard of the hotel. They have excellent staff. Very warm friendly and welcoming. The front staff, the restaurant staff as well as housekeeping.
We cannot be more grateful at the hospitality of the restaurant staff esp. We used to often bring outside food and they would be happy to heat the food for us and even provide a side of pickles so that we could enjoy our meals. That really made our stay memorable.
All in all an excellent choice and we will surely visit again. Thank you.

The vilest and viciousness of intentions with the hotel guests coming right from the management to the staffs! Deliberately got the staffs to slam and bang the doors around my room the entire day! During the night, it would be the security guy pacing up and down my room unrelentlessly every 10 to 15 minutes! The echoing of his footsteps splitting the silence of the night and permeating into my room. All my pleas for a quiet stay fell on deaf ears! The General Manager even has the audacity to threaten me that there’s a huge group of boisterous guests checking in and that I should leave. His persistence for me to leave was appalling and obnoxious. He made it very personal with me and it sure feels very personal. The deliberate and continuous banging and stomping from the staffs was to frustrate and aggravate me to leave!
The General Manager refused to turn on the Television Channel despite repeated requests from the maintenance staff and the water heater was turned on partially to conserve energy and I am left with only 5 minutes of lukewarm water everytime! All these he claims to be economically viable for Marriott!!! How Ludicrous and Preposterous can they get?!? As a Marriott Bonvoy Member, I am totally disgusted and repulsed by such unprofessional inconsideration for the Hotel guests! When did Marriott start compromising the creature comforts of their guests in order to be economically viable???
I implore all travellers to reconsider and avoid staying in this atrocious and obnoxious Marriott Courtyard Dar Es Salaam; whose inertia service reeks of vileness and personal vendettas! It’s imperative that you heed my advice or stay at your own peril or suffer the consequences like I did!

Response from Guest Service, Guest Services / Front Office at Protea Hotel Dar es Salaam Courtyard
Responded Aug 10, 2020
Thank you for staying with us recently and taking time to share your experience. You checked in with a single night’s reservation but continued to extend the stay daily and ended up staying for 5 nights in total. We would like to believe that you extended your stay because you were enjoying your time with us. Every single associate at the Protea Hotel by Marriott Courtyard sincerely tries, at all times, to ensure each and every guest leaves with nothing but fond memories of a satisfactory stay. Our efforts were the same with you as well and you acknowledged this several times by praising the service and experience – verbally and in writing. But after the first three nights and two days of our stay, your started feeling that pretty much all staff were conspiring to trouble you on a 24 hour basis by systematically banging doors, windows and stomping in all rooms around you as well as corridors. Your concerns required constant personal attention of several Heads of Departments and the entire Front Office TEAM. We all did what we could do and more to ensure your comfort. After your first complaint about Housekeeping staff making noise while cleaning rooms they were specifically asked not to enter the floor unnecessarily and do it only with caution, which was followed religiously. Despite being extremely patient, courteous, understanding and hospitable, you continued to feel that the staff are making noise and disturbing you. You wanted to sleep in the gym, which for safety reasons we couldn’t allow. We arranged dedicated security guards outside your room for your peace of mind and to block anyone entering the floor. But that also didn’t solve the problem and you wanted to sleep in the lobby, restaurant or coffee shop, which again, we couldn’t allow due to obvious reasons. There were no other guests staying on your floor apart from one night where one room was occupied and we offered to show you the CCTV footages to prove that no one is disturbing you but you did not want to do this. As you can see we went above and beyond to accommodate you. It would be an impossible feat for us to organize all staff to pull off the kind of stunts you mentioned, all for the sole purpose of making you leave. It is also unnecessary, as we could have simply asked you to leave since the management reserves the right of admission. We conveyed that there is no such effort from the staff to you several times and assured you verbally and in writing that we would continue to host you. But you felt otherwise. We never told you that a ‘’huge group of boisterous guests is checking in and that you should leave’’. You preferred to be the only person staying on your floor or keep other GUESTS away and we informed you that we have a group checking in and we may have to assign some rooms on your floor. We also specifically informed you that we will try to allocate rooms away from your room and that you may stay with us for 1 year if required. We agree that on the third day morning you had an interruption of hot water supply in your room. This was rectified within 15 minutes of receiving your written message, which is on record along with the resolution confirmation. This was not repeated after this, had nothing to do with viability or cost saving and reference was never made to any savings. FYI, we use solar water heaters and hence the water heating doesn’t cost us. Satellite TV connection has been down and you asked about this once only. We informed you that efforts are being made to reconnect the service and may take a couple of days. You did not bring this up during the rest of your stay. As you can see from the response, we pay close attention to what guests feel and say about our services and respond to every one of them. It was unfortunate that you felt the way you did despite our best efforts. It was clearly not the intention and hope you understand the same.

The Courtyard is located in a rather quiet area of Dar es Salaam. Rooms are a bit old, which however leads to additional charm. Apart from the great food/restaurant the little garden is the big plus of this hotel.
Service is great. As there was a small problem in the room when checking in, I could immediately change the room.
The gym is small but offers everything you need for a workout on a business trip. Thus, if I come back, I will defnitely stay in this hotel again.
The airport transfer is also recommendable.

Gentle hotel with a lot of old world charm and character. The senior staff go out of their way to be helpful. They are warm and friendly, as are the staff at the restaurant and the reception. The stained glass lighting in the rooms and in the building in general, combined with the wood work - give a ambience of warmth and old world charm. Will happily stay there again should I need to!

Me and my colleague had spent around 7 nights in Protea Hotel (Courtyard) in April 2022 as part of our Business trip. We had our own apprehensions about the accomodation & food as it was a different country. The moment we checked into the hotel, Mr. Dinish Antony - GM, met us and explained to us regarding Tanzania, the hotel etc. He was a great support system throughout our stay in Courtyard.

Special mention to the food that Courtyard serves, the courtesy of the hotel staff and the comfort level they provide to their customers. If you have a taste for Indian Cuisine, they serve those dishes too.

Properly located, little away from main town, near to the sea shore - Protea Hotel, Courtyard is one of the best of its kind that you will find in Dar.

Looking forward to visit the property again 🥂

It is for the first time am giving a review, which compelled me to write because of the comfort and convenience that was provided at Protea Hotel during our 7 day stay at this Hotel, extremely happy with the services of the entire hotel staff, especially from the GM Mr. Dinish Anthony who was very helpful, supportive and informative, we never missed a single day without interacting with him during our stay, next comes the Food, which was awesome and this is the reason we had most of our Lunch & Dinner at this Hotel itself we hardly visited may be just twice to any other restaurant, the Buffet was super delicious every day and honestly have never had such a tasty and wonderful buffet in my life, as soon as i reached back home was badly missing the hotel and the buffet, the stay at hotel was very comfortable, all people in and around the hotel were really good and always there to help you.
The room was pretty good and clean, the house keeping staff made sure that it is maintained with their routine schedule.
This would always be my choice if in case anytime get to be back to the wonderful country Tanzania, the stay was something amazing to cherish and wish to be back here soon either on Business trip or on vacation.
Finally Thanking Mr. Dinish and his team for hosting us and making our stay safe and comfortable.
Cheers!

I only spent one night at the Protea, but I have every intention of returning. The staff - from the reception, to the kitchen, to the bellhops were the most genuinely warm, personable and helpful I have encountered. The hotel itself is charming in all its Old World detail, from the Tiffany lamps to the vintage telephones in every room. The restaurant was superb, and room service was swift. There was no hesitation to bend over backwards for any request - a slightly later checkout, printing a document - I was met with positivity and warmth at every encounter. A wonderful team, at a beautiful property, in a great location for seeing Dar Es Salaam.

We booked the transfer from the hotel as you get met at the airport and the traffic is crazy! It was $20 US but worth it as it took about an hour and a half for a twenty minute journey. Comfort over cost in this case works.
