From parking the car at Garden Cove to departing the boat the next day, the service of Gary Pomroy and his assistant couldn't be more helpful. The weather was not good the first day with the cool temperature and pouring rain but that certainly didn't dampen our spirits. For those who were not wearing a mask, masks were handed out as we boarded the boat.. I can't say enough about Gary's role as Captain, reading the new rules under Covid19, pointing out places of interest and providing a glimpse into the history of the island. The food, service and hospitality of the staff on the resort were nothing short of excellent. Due to Covid19, all restrictions were followed in the distancing of guests to the sanitization and cleanliness of the resort's rooms and eating areas. The meals were all homemade traditional Newfoundland fare and the bread made fresh daily in the kitchen was the highlight of every meal. All this and the best of entertainment with the guitar and accordion at night and at the mug up on the way back to the mainland make this a memorable trip long to be remembered and return again.

July 25, 2020 I went to Woody Island with a friend. This was my 3rd time staying at the resort and I am never disappointed! This year, even with COVID was no different. The staff were very good and adhered to cleaning , sanitizing , social distancing and were very professional. The food is exceptional as always and they are very accommodating if you do not like fish or have dietary needs. The scenery is beautiful with two lovely trails. The short trail leads to a sandy beach that you could possible swim in and there is an old stone house nearby that is very interesting. the other trail takes you to the other end of the island where you will see the remains of a school, grave yards, a farm with lots of animals and beautiful ocean views! In total, both trails are about 7-8 km return total and very easy to walk with proper footwear. If you do the 2 day 1 night stay, you will have a boat ride and boil up at Sound Island which is another wonderful experience and the lunch is soo good, especially the date crumbles which are my all time favorite! Did I mention the entertainment? Saturday night we were entertained by Dave on guitar and then he was joined by Gary on accordion! After they fed you lunch on Sound Island, they played a few tunes again. Last year we were entertained by Jordan Harnum ! never a disappointment! Also they have row boats you can use and supple the life jackets. If your up for a game of horse shoes, they are prepared. there's a fire pit on site as well. I would encourage everyone to book this resort, you get more then your moneys worth. Get a group of friends together or just yourselves and go! youll have a peaceful, tranquil and enjoyable experience!

If you’ve never been to woody island resort you really don’t know what your missing. This was my second trip to this resort. After I returned the first time I knew for certain I couldn’t wait to go back. The second trip was even better then the first. Everything was amazing beginning to end. The boat tour is awesome. The food beyond delicious. The hospitality was Wonderful, the staff can’t do enough to make you happy. The accommodations were spotless clean and with covid in mind they maintained social distancing and high standards of cleanliness throughout the facilities. The nightly entertainment, that guy sure can sing. I loved the fact that he sang a variety of music since I’m not really into NL music. Gary on the accordion, so talented and the sweetest man you could ever meet! We took the rowboat out which was fun, Then a couple lawn games and some R&R in the sunshine. It was a very relaxing getaway. I would recommend this to anyone and can’t wait to go back again!!! ❤️

Visited Woody Island July 16-17, 2021. A big shout out to Gary and the staff for the great hospitality. Can't beat the home cooked meals. The building we stayed in was next to the main building. The rooms were basic, but very clean - no tv or hair dryers, but towels, bathrooms in each room etc. They do have wifi. They shut the generator off at certain times overnight, but that's part of the experience of visiting a resettled community. There are some hikes you can take. The scenery that we got to enjoy on the boat ride was wonderful. As an NL'er it gave you a great appreciation of what some of these smaller communities were like. Would highly recommend a visit.

This experience was a family highlight. This one night stay would be ideal for any age. We were a group of 7 women (3 in their eighties) who had a fantastic time. The weather was rainy and humid but it wouldn't have mattered what the weather was. We were well fed, entertained, made comfortable, and really couldn't ask for more. We have decided to do it again next year and bring other family members. The facilities are simple but cozy. Each room has at least a double and a single bed and a bathroom with walk-in shower or tub/ shower. There are walking trails but lots to do if you want to stay close to home. The live entertainment in the evenings was wonderful. The music was a lovely mix with something for everyone. Lots of laughs and we felt we bonded with the other guests. The lodge would be ideal for a wedding or family reunion and can accommodate a large group in a separate setting. The views on the bay are spectacular. We often just sat on the covered deck and looked out. The setting brought back many memories and an appreciation of our rich Newfoundland culture. Tourists would also benefit from the experience of living 1950s rural Newfoundland. Guests were invited to row a boat and learn a dance or participate in the entertainment but there was no pressure to do so. We ended the excursion with a boat ride, picnic and boil-up including more lighthearted entertainment. Two night stays are also available for a fraction more. Considering what we received we all felt we should have been charged more!

My wife and I Travelled to Woody Island for our anniversary.
Day 1
From the time we arrived in Garden cove until our trip ended we were treated awesome. A beautiful boat ride to the island with skipper Gary Pomroy as an excellent tour guide and host. Upon arrival, you are quickly checked in to your room so you can get out and enjoy some of the beauty of Woody Island. Hiking trails, dory rides, and be sure to check out the Rock House... The food was terrific, pea soup and homemade bread for lunch, followed by toutons for dessert. Fresh fish and veggies (all you can eat, and I mean ALL you can eat) for supper, with a complimentary glass of wine, followed by an great evening of entertainment with Dave Reardon (and Gary on the accordion for a couple as well).
Day 2
Another big feed of eggs, bacon and homemade toast, all you can fit in ya. Then it's off for the boat tour around the island. After a steam around the island with Gary again serving as tour guide to answer any questions you might have as he navigates all the coves and harbors around the island, there's a final stop for a beach boil up, a meal of sandwiches, beef soup, and a mug of tea, while listening to Dave belt out another few tunes.
Then its off to Garden Cove to end two days of enjoyment and relaxation.
Where else are you getting accommodations, meals , a night of entertainment and a boat tour for this price? Excellent bang for your buck.
Great time, and will definitely be back....(with a crowd with us next time:)

I am from Nfld but I have heard so many wonderful stories about this island resort that when the opportunity presented itself, I just had to go.

The boat ride from Garden Cove to the island is approximately 40 minutes, it was a beautiful sunny day and the ride over was smooth and the air refreshing.

Upon arrival we headed to the main house to get our room key and the aroma of fresh bread and the peasoup as we walked in smelled so good that everyone was saying “ oh my gosh can’t wait for lunch” and believe me it was absolutely delicious and worth the wait.
The staff are exceptional; always smiling, obliging and constantly inquiring if anyone needs anything.
The rooms are simple, comfortable and very clean.
Your afternoon is free to explore the island; supper is served at 6 and this too is just delicious. 9:00 pm the entertainment started and it was just wonderful. Dave the singer and guitar player as well as Gary on the accordian were simply magnificent, the room was full of great music, laughter, chitter chatter, dancing, just fabulous.
Next morning breakfast was served and we then gathered our belongings and shortly thereafter we boarded the boat and Toured around the island; we stopped for a shore lunch, homemade soup, sandwiches, boiled raisin squares, date squares , and homemade bread with butter and mollasses, oh my goodness it was sooooo delicious!!! We even had Dave and Gary playing and singing and some of the guests dancing onshore.
We then boarded the boat, finished the tour around the island and headed back to shore; the chatter from all aboard was how much fun they had and felt sad that our excursion was ending. One visitor said to me “we all came in as strangers, but leaving as friends”, this is so true.
This trip to Woody Island is truly magical, to me it was worth every penney.
The operators and staff of this resort are to be commended for such a well run operation, I highly recommend the Woody Island Resort to everyone!!

A stay at Woody Island Resort was the finale of our 2 week visit to Newfoundland. The food was AMAZING, staff was FANTASTIC and the entertainment was GREAT! We were in the cottage just down from the main hall and it was likely the poorest of the rooms available and ours was not very clean. The beds were extra small (3/4?) and the floors were at quite a slope. Our room in particular, had animal hair and human hair in the dresser drawers, on the chair and on the floor. This being said, the rest of the experience made up for it, but they definitely need to spend a bit more time on the cleaning and some updating. This was a great opportunity to meet several Newfoundlanders and we really enjoyed the music and the island hopping with lunch the following day.

I am glad that you enjoyed your trip but so very disappointed that your room was not clean. Although we do offer a rustic experience, nevertheless, we always strive to to present very clean premises including our bedrooms. Overwhelming our guests have complemented us on the cleanliness of our bedrooms. However, it appears that yours "fell through the cracks" and I will investigate to see what happened. In the meantime, we appreciate your kind words about the rest of your trip and I will be sure and pass your comments on to the staff. Thanks again for your support.

Visited Nfld. Approx 2 hr drive from St. John's to Garden Cove. There we boarded a boat for the 45 minute, or so, ride to Woody Island. Upon arrival our belongings are transported up to the main house where the meals, etc. are provided. Not luxurious accommodations, but are very comfortable with its own washroom. No TV, which is OK, but there is cell service. Opportunity to take in the hiking trails or use the row boats or just relax. Excellent meals - two on the Saturday, breakfast Sunday morning & a farewell lunch provided on an another island on the way back to Garden Cove following a boat tour. Saturday night Dave provided excellent entertainment with his guitar & voice. There were 27 persons on the trip from different parts of Canada & livelihoods. Gary & his team gave us an incredible, relaxing time away from the 'noisy' city environment! When in the St. John's area this excursion should be a 'must' during your time there!

This was our 3rd visit to Woody Island Resort. The last 2 times we were there was more than 20 years ago. We intended to go just for the 1 night 2 day package but thanks to Loyola and Judy being able to let us stay an extra night we ended up doing 3 days and 2 nights. Everything was absolutely wonderful. Accommodations, staff, entertainment and especially the food was amazing. A big shout out to Gary, Matt, Elaine, Sherry and the rest of the staff, sorry I never got everybody's names. The staff really go out of their way to make your trip phenomenal. We hiked everywhere we could possibly hike and then some. We toured the rock house and old shop museum. Every person we met were ever so friendly whether it was the staff, entertainment or people that have summer homes there. No trouble to start up a conversation with anyone. The meals were delicious and so plentiful. The live music was great. We had an excellent trip and can't wait to do it again sometime real soon. We travel quite a bit but rarely get the chance to travel our own province during the summer due to the nature of our work. Woody Island Resort is definitely a place everyone should visit if they can.
