Detailed Reviews
My wife and I stayed at the Alpen Resort at the end of February, 2020. We’ve skied / traveled all over the world and I can’t say enough good things about this hotel. First of all it’s a great value compared to the other options in Zermatt, especially considering the spacious rooms with expansive views of the surrounding mountains. Yes the property is not in the main village, but the town square is only a short 10 min walk away. Best of all the ski bus stops maybe 30 meters from the hotel entrance, and the Gornergrat Bahn is an easy 5 min walk. Breakfast was plentiful and varied, and the afternoon tea and cake much appreciated. There is a nice, though dated, pool/ hot tub/ spa area/ recreation area in the basement. Great for kids, maybe a little to crowded/ cold for adults. One nice touch is the ski locker area, which includes secure storage for each room and boot dryers(!!). Just a wonderful place to stay!

To summarise, we had a great week at Alpen Resort Hotel!
We stayed as a couple at the hotel for seven nights over the New Year period. Upon arriving at Zermatt Train Station we contacted the hotel, and the shuttle arrived only a couple of minutes later to transfer us to the hotel.
The hotel is in a great location. It’s an easy walk into the centre of the village where all the shops and restaurants exist. Only 2 minutes walk away is a Denner supermarket where you can purchase groceries, drinks etc. Access to the ski lifts is also super easy with a Green Bus Stop only 2 minutes up the road that runs every 5/10 minutes to take you to the Matterhorn Express Gondola, the Gornergrat Train Station is only a 5 minute walk, and the Sunnegga Funicular is a 10 minute walk.
We stayed in a Panorama Double Room which had fantastic views of the Matterhorn. The room was of a good standard with plenty of room and a comfortable bed. There was only a small bar fridge but if we needed to keep anything cold, we just put it out on the balcony! The only downside of the room was that it had a combined bath/shower rather than being separated, and was quite compact.
The facilities at the hotel are great. The swimming pool and hot tubs are first class and an excellent way to recover from a day of skiing. Breakfast is included and we found it be of a good standard and variety for a European hotel. We ate at all three dining options and the Hornox Alpine Grill was our pick of the three with a great ambiance and good food and wine. The lobby bar was also a great place to unwind. Another facility of note were the ski lockers which have easy access at the end of the day. Potential guests should note however that there are no guest laundry facilities on site, with the hotel offering a washing service for 45CHF per bag.
And if you ever happen to be in Zermatt for a New Years Eve, don’t expect an early, quiet night! Fireworks in the valley were nearly continuous from 5pm to 1am!

We spent two nights at the Alpen Resort Hotel. 5 min. walk from the train station.
Staff at Reception are very friendly and helpful.
Food at Restaurant is of good quality and staff friendly despite being very busy.
No special Corona measures taken at the Breakfast buffet - all help yourself and using same serving spoons.............. cereals/cold meats not wrapped or covered.
The room is of a good size with shower in the bath tub. We explicitly booked a room with a view onto the Matterhorn. Unfortunately the view was obstructed by a crane - see picture - and we were woken up at 7.30 due the noise of the builders.
We learnt that the hotel is building a wellness facility.
It would be good if they would inform customers on the webpage that the view on to the Matterhorn is obstructed and that there will be building noise.
No reduction of room rate or any other compensation has been offered for these inconveniences.

Dear Guest Thank you for staying with us and for taking the time to give us a review. It is true that we are currently in a major expansion and renovation of our Spa and swimming pool. However, we have put this information on our website and deleted all mentions of our pool on third party booking sites. I am deeply sorry if at the time of your booking we have not yet updated all the information. Thank you for your understanding. Nevertheless, we do in fact offer a compensation in form of daily F&B vouchers for all clients. Thank you again for your review and we hope you will join us for the reopening of our spa in December 2020. Best regards from Zermatt Reto Aufdenblatten, Guest relations

We came here for our honeymoon and had the loveliest time! Everyone here made an effort to make our stay feel so special. Our room was decorated so nicely for us on arrival. They had even swapped the complimentary Prosecco on arrival that came with our booking for an alcohol free sparkling wine on my husband’s request as I don’t drink. We made use of the spa facilities often throughout the week also and really enjoyed the jacuzzi and steam room. Would recommend a massage with Stathis while you’re here - he’s brilliant! We ate at both restaurants - both were nice but the Hornox felt very slick and modern. Especially loved the drinks selection in the hotel bar and restaurants also. Great cocktail selection, and being able to order alcohol free options is great for non drinkers.

This hotel was awesome from start to finish! We ended up checking in around 10pm and were greeted with a smile, the room was so big and had everything we needed. We had a balcony room with a view of the Matterhorn which was amazing! The breakfast was fantastic, it was a buffet and even had Mimosas. Upon checkout we were told we could store our bags and still use their facilities. So after a walk around town, we came back and played tennis. Overall an awesome stay and so worth the price!

Alpen Resort Hotel and Spa - stunning holiday experience with wonderfully friendly and helpful staff
Alpen Resort Hotel provided a wonderful holiday experience. The facilities were exceptional, the food was of a superb standard with good variety and the staff throughout the hotel were extremely friendly and helpful. The additional cost for a room with a balcony was worth it for the view of the Matterhorn.
The Alpen Resort Spa was of a very high standard with a decent size swimming pool. The outdoor whirl pool was a wonderful experience, being directly beneath the snow capped mountains.
The hotel was only a 5min walk from the train station and from the town. It was perfectly placed for the nearest E Bus stop for skiing transfer to the ski lift systems.

Fantastic service, extremely friendly staff. I really felt at home here great feel to the hotel
Room was upgraded from single to large double at no extra charge.
Superb breakfast buffet range, the best I have ever seen.
Dinner in restaurant was excellent and very good value due to various vouchers provided by the hotel.
Room had everything you could wish for very modern and extremely well appointed.
Great venue for summer hiking, free E bus to lifts.
Close to good supermarket.
Great views of the Matterhorn and other mountains from the hotel.
Very good price for room.
Loud building noise from early morning till around 7pm. This is only for Summer 2020 as they are building a new wellness centre for the hotel and due to the weather constraints have to work all the hours they can.

From the time you enter you know you are in a beautiful and welcoming hotel with great woodwork throughout. The rooms were nice, spacious and quite comfortable. The spa facilities for both adults and children are first rate. Our kids were 14 & 16 and we saw all ages enjoying the spa. We spent 60-90 minutes after skiing each evening moving around the pool, hot tubs, steam rooms, saunas etc. They were all beautiful with relaxing lighting and music. Breakfast had a good selection of options including made to order eggs. Everything was very good. It wasn't the top breakfast I have had at a four star hotel in European ski resorts but still very solid and everyone will be more than satisfied. The location is off the main street at the edge of the main village about a seven minute walk into the center of the village and very quiet. The Gornergrat train is a 4-5 minute walk in ski boots. The Sunnegga train is 8-10 minute walk in ski boots and the third lift is across town and too long to walk in ski boots. The ski bus stop is just a few minutes from the hotel and takes you to the Sunnegga train in a few minutes if you don't want to walk, The Matterhorn express in around ten minutes by ski bus. While you are not in the center of the resort everything including the skiing is quite accessible without too much effort. I would highly recommend the Alpen Resort Hotel. It is an excellent choice and appeared to be a great value for the money as compared to similar quality hotels.

+1
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Zermatt. I thought the hotel was excellent. There were lots of thoughtful touches in our room. For example you were supplied with a robe and slippers for your trips to the spa. There was also a basket with two spa towels, which you could use to take your things to the spa. I thought the spa area was fantastic. I have been to a lot of spas and this would definitely arrive all the best. There was a hairdryer in the bathroom. There was a coffee machine cups and free coffee pods. Children were also well catered for there was a separate pool area for them as well as a dedicated playroom. The food in the restaurant is extremely good quality. The ski boot room was well equipped and we had a locker which accommodated two sets of skis, poles, boots and helmets all connected to your room key. If I were to visit zermatt again I would definitely stay here.

What a wonderful hotel. We loved our stay and would definitely return given the chance!
We are family of 2 adults and 2 teens and I’m so glad we booked a family room ( # 404 building B) with a loft for the kids and a view of the Matterhorn. The view was a such a delight. Always changing according to the weather and the light. We booked the half board option which included a sumptuous buffet breakfast and a delicious dinner with several choices for mains each night as well as soups, a salad buffet, and a nightly choice of a dessert of cheese platter. The chefs really knew how to create flavourful dishes with lots of opportunity for healthy salads and fruits. My only thought was that the hotel might consider giving dinner guests tap water without charging us for it. Yes, it’s a thing in Switzerland to charge for tap water, but they might consider waiving that charge for half board customers… there is no charge for all the water, juices, teas and coffees at breakfast.
The skiing was AMAZING, we got the international ski passes and went to Italy for the day a few times. There is a free ski bus that takes everyone to the various Zermatt ski gondola stop off points. Easy walk from the Alpen’s ski room.
The indoor pool and outside whirlpool spa were terrific. The lobby area is lovely to enjoy the welcome drink and to have a game of chess.
Loved this hotel and I sure miss my Matterhorn views. What a treat.

Hi - to be sure, book a Matterhorn room view - Zermatt is surrounded by mountains and beautiful from any vista, but the Matterhorn is truly special.
Hi Nathan,
we can just confirm James answer :-)
Public bus stop is also just 3 Minutes walk from the hotel - in case you don't want to walk.
Lucky you, we were told that the main building construction would be finished by the end of the year and then the work would be fitting out the inside and would not be very noisy. Please check with the hotel their Email is on their Web site.
The hotels are about 10mins walk apart depending on street conditions along the town's main drag (the Bahnhofstrasse).
Ski pass prices for Dec 2018 are not out yet but were €330 or €378 if you want to ski into Italy. Suggest you wait till you arrive to buy because weather is unpredictable and the lifts to Italy are closed quite often.
