We were at Foxwood in July and we had a wonderful week. The place, the owners (Rob and Julia), the other guests - everything is relaxed. You do your own thing, but you can also join in activities as you want. The surroundings are beautiful and peaceful - you're right on the lake, and a stone's throw from Algonquin park. The cottage was very comfortable (not that you're inside a lot). We relaxed, our kids had fun, and I can see why so many of the other families came back every year. If we lived closer, so would we!

Foxwood has become our summer home away from home for the past 18 years. Two weeks every year we escape to the clean air, refreshing water and breathtaking sunsets of Lake of Bays. Not to mention the friends, familiar faces, and loons we look forward to reconnecting with each year. Rob and Julia Wallace, the owners of Foxwood, create a welcoming, immaculately maintained environment. The housekeeping cottage we frequent every year is well equipped and more than comfortable. Our three children have all grown up at Foxwood and think of Jolly Rover as our own summer cottage. They have made many friends who they look forward to seeing again each year we go back. The kids activity program are very much enjoyed by younger kids and create a wonderful safe environment so parents can get a break to relax or read at the beach.
Foxwood is located in the most beautiful north east section of Muskoka where it is pristine and quiet. Lake of Bays is vast with many different areas to explore by boat, canoe or kayak. You’ll be able to enjoy day trips on the water to places like Dorset or Baysville where you can have lunch or do your shopping.
Foxwood is a short drive into Algonquin Park where you can enjoy the spectacular and varied hiking and biking trails. If you are interested in mountain biking you won’t want to miss the Minnesing trail which offers terrain which is hard to come by in Ontario.
We had the pleasure of spending a weekend at Foxwood this winter. The cottage was warm and inviting with a gas fireplace creating just the right ambience for our winter weekend getaway. Rob and Julia were so accommodating they prepared our barbecue for winter outdoor cooking and happily obliged with some provisions we had forgotten to bring. They also had snow shoes all lined up for our use to hike through the amazing Foxwood trails.
In winter there are many opportunities for spectacular cross-country skiing nearby in Algonquin and elsewhere where you can enjoy the pristine winter wonderland.
There are very few opportunities left in Ontario like Foxwood if you want to enjoy the pleasures of a housekeeping cottage in this unique part of Muskoka. If you go, be sure to talk with Rob or Julia about where to explore in the area so you get to enjoy this magnificent corner of Ontario.

My friend & I enjoyed a few days/nights recently in a 2 bedroom cottage. The location was perfect & it was really quiet & relaxing. Loved the evenings spent around the fire pit & the beautiful sunsets, as well as just chilling out in the Muskoka chairs by the dock. It's the kind of place where you could do as much or as little as you liked. The owners Julia & Rob & their lovely daughter Meg, along with Annie the dog & Martha the cat, were very welcoming & friendly. It was the week after school returned which suited us perfectly, however I think it would be a really great place for families during school holidays. The location to Algonquin Park & other places close by is also very good. Would highly recommend a stay here.

From the Huntsville Forester:
LAKE OF BAYS – One of Lake of Bay’s oldest running resorts has closed.
“Foxwood Resort, which was founded in the 1800s and has operated non-stop as a commercial establishment welcoming summer guests, closed on Feb. 15, 2017. It will no longer be a tourism resort. It is moving on to – we are told – a corporate retreat.

My mom and I stayed here for our annual winter getaway. Muskoka is always lovely in the winter and Foxwood is no exception. Snowshoe cottage was very cozy and warm, with a fully equipped kitchen and comfortable seating (so important when you want to spend the hours reading!). We loved the heated floors. It's about a 30 minute drive from both Huntsville and Algonquin Park, which was also great for day hiking. The resort is nice and quiet in the winter, which was perfect. The hosts were friendly but not overbearing. A lovely property for a winter getaway.

Dear Emln50, Thank you for your review and we were happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Foxwood. Thanks as well for your "green" suggestion of providing an option to compost. In case you decide to return to Foxwood, and to others considering a visit, we actually offer an opportunity to compost. In the "Clean & Green Tips" section of our Guest Info Guide which is left in each cottage we talk about our compost program and we provide a small (clean) compost bucket for just that purpose. The majority of out winter guests are not as interested in composting as you are so we are a bit more low key and offer a compost bucket only when asked for one. With the heightened awareness towards the environment perhaps we should be encouraging it more and make the option more obvious. In summer, composting by guests is quite routine at Foxwood; over a cubic yard of compost is generated from green waste coming from cottage kitchens and which would otherwise get tossed into the landfill. We use the compost to enhance the soil in our organic veggie garden Again, thanks for your suggestion.

If your looking to relax and rest this may not be the place for you. Along with being charged for almost every amenity you are expected to cook, clean, and take out the trash. The lake is beautiful but filled with large mosquitoes that are frightening. The owner keeps the grounds well groomed and is attentive and present. Just be ready to work!

Dear AC Thank you for your Trip Advisor comment. From reading your review we clearly got the impression that we did not meet your expectations and that, if not for the fact that the group organizer booked your accommodations here, you likely would have chosen a more full service location. Foxwood is a housekeeping cottage resort; each cottage has a well equipped kitchen and guests basically keep house as they would at their own. Yes, we ask that guests empty their trash and do a very basic clean much like one would do if using a friend’s cottage. That is what housekeeping cottage resorting is. We try to make it somewhat worthwhile by putting all those who leave their cottages clean into a draw for a free weekend here. Although the points you make about having to cook, clean and take out the trash are correct we think what you experienced is similar to being invited to a vegetarian restaurant when you wanted a steak…you would obviously be unsatisfied no matter how good the vegetarian food was! While we do charge for some amenities, many are included with your rental. This includes use of our kayaks, canoes and paddleboats, participation in our summer kids program and evening social programs, campfires, tennis and more. By charging for some optional amenities, we keep a holiday at Foxwood affordable for more people. After a long winter and wet spring, mosquitoes have been the talk of Muskoka this month. Even so, with our on-shore breezes and lakefront location Foxwood fairs better than most places in the area. We spoke to many in your group and the message we received was that they enjoyed their stay and loved the location. The one survey received rated the accommodation, the service, the kid’s activities and the cleanliness of the resort as “excellent”. They went on to say that they would recommend Foxwood to friends and that we exceeded expectations. We are not trying to say that you were wrong in your opinions but that perhaps your expectations were for a more full service resort. We have been conducting our own guest surveys since 2002. Of the 578 that we have collected, we have had only two surveys saying guests were not satisfied with what we had to offer…..we know we cannot be all things to all people but appreciate your feedback. We only wish that we had known your feelings earlier; perhaps we could have done something to help better your stay.

My husband and I were married at Foxwood Resort and since then we have been back for another stay. The cottages have modern conveniences but with a touch of rustic charm. The grounds are well kept and open up to a beautiful view of the lake (a must-see are the sunsets!). There are plenty of recreational activities available both on and off the water, most at no additional cost. The owners are amazing people who make you feel like family from the moment you arrive at the resort. It's been almost 4 years since we've been married and I still have family tell me what an incredible time they had at Foxwood Resort. Thank you Rob and Julia.
