Rated 3 as courtesy. We canceled our stay and that was were the problem arose.
Contacted by phone, messenger & email. Phone e only reached voice-mail, never received response. Tried other methods. To date no one from hotel responded. Never been billed yet, but would be reasonable for hotel to respond & let me know the messages were received.

A Friday night concert in Saskatoon & Saturday afternoon football game in Regina meant we needed a simple, clean, easy type of hotel room for the night. We wouldn't really be there that long, didn't need to spend big money and so my friend found us a couple rooms at the ThriftLodge.
I was skeptical at first, but when I read on their website of the renovations taking place and what seemed to be a true desire to turn the place around, I was encouraged and hopeful. And, hey it included a continental breakfast.
However, as the title of my review suggests, you just can't polish a turd.

Overall, it looks alright when you arrive with a freshly paved parking lot and renovated lobby. The continental breakfast room looked clean, bright & fresh. The check in process was easy, the front desk person was friendly and recommended a great restaurant & directions.

It was a scorching 30+C summer day and we needed some ice for a drink after the drive however, it was not working. Front desk gave no good explanation and no alternative. When one of your few ammenities is an ice machine, you should probably get it working. It didn't work that afternoon, evening or the next morning.
No harm, with hope in our eye, we make our way to the room only to have it dashed. It was hot, even with the air conditioning running full blast. A small fan circulated it best it could. Our friends' new air conditioner worked perfectly. So maybe it's something that's being renovated. However, they had all the same worn out, haggered room issues we did. As you looked around, you couldn't help but spot the years of use. Dirty, stained, old carpet. Banged up, frayed, stained, old furniture, drapes. I lost most of my sense of smell years ago, only to have it return briefly with gusto and an awful musty smell from the bathroom. Wet & stained ceiling tiles, worn & stained linoleum, cracked caulking in tub.
The bed was old & worn out (but revealed no bed bugs! yeah!) however a check of the blankets showed cigarette burns in the bedspread and hairs on the allegedly fresh sheets. Perhaps the housekeeper is extremely hairy, but at any rate, there were hairs galore.
I called down to the front desk to ask for more towels and casually mention the sheets seem to be covered in hair. There was no housekeeping staff there, so she said to come down to the desk and get the towels. I did and she offered another room which wouldn't work for our circumstance, but no apology or discount. I just took another couple sets of sheets and remade the bed overtop of the hair, hoping a few vodkas before bed would help us forget.

My boyfriend had a shower and without a working fan, the room quickly got even hotter and more uncomfortable. Plus you felt as though you couldn't relax anywhere. Hairy bed, stained chairs, awful carpet. But we tried to make the most of it.
Later that night, the sleep wasn't great, but it was quiet enough, at least with the hum of the labouring a/c plugging away. We got up early and checked out the breakfast. A nice selection for a quick bite: coffee, juice (OJ was broken), bread for toast, a few cereal selections, fruit, yogurt, muffins & other baked goods. The waffles looked good, if you had the time and patience to wait around for the one-at-a-time self-serve waffle iron.
Overall, I don't want to seem like a princess that can't take a little "roughing" it now and then. And honestly, the other guests seemed quite content. The room was about as clean as you can get something that run-down, save for the sheets. It just looked sad and in need of a complete overhaul. Hopefully the management comes through with complete renovations that are as nice as the 37"LED TV's in every room. But for the price, $119+ ($135 taxes in), I just feel it was overpriced for what we got.
After retelling our story, many of my friends say they couldn't have stayed there. So I give this review honestly so you can make your own decision.

we realize it's under remodel but this room was supposed to be ready for guests and it was far from it. there was no place in the bathroom to set anything no counter of any kind.there also was no place to hang a coat or any clothes I would not want to lay my coat on the floor as the carpet wasn't the cleanest . There was an overstuffed chair set so it was a tight fit to get to the bathroom needs some rearranging . It was to bad as the staff was real good and friendly. We feel we paid to much for this room

Great comments and thank you for noticing the renovations. We love your ideas and we agree. The great thing about being a smaller property and local ownership that cares is we have the power to change things quickly with no red tape to cut through. I want to address all of your concerns and how we tackled these as they were quick cheap fixes and then talk about how we are going above your expectations. I remember speaking to you and love the open honesty, properties need customers like you. 1) no counter space - bingo, I don`t like it either so we have purchased and are installing floating shelves so you won`t have to plop your stuff on the sink ledge or worse, on the toilet tank. 2) over stuffed chair making it tough to get into the bathroom - You arrived the day after we received our new furniture and it was not put in place of my satisfaction. The moment I walked in a saw the placement I wasn`t happy so by reversing the set up made it much for spacious so now there is plenty of room to move. Now back to the bathroom shelving. Upstairs rooms have counter space but the first floor rooms having floating sinks. We`re ripping those out and installing granite countertops with undermount sinks. That will ensure all clients will have a place to put their bathroom necessities. Give us till December and you have my word it will be done. We care about your feedback. Sincerely, Travis

very easy conveinient and clean breakfast was offered but we did not have time and this was all included in the price of one hundred and five dollars a night. What a deal. The front desk was pleasant and made sure we had acess to all ammenities there.

Unlike the other places along my way they where cheaper and more helpful. They take a cash deposit to help thos who dont depend in credit cards when they travel also allow dogs for a small fee. And the rooms are comfortable with lots of pillows

Disgusting in every facet of the word. Should have realized when the check in attendant did not have my reservation, and upon using the bathroom in the lobby, the toilet was covered in fecal matter. Checking into the room, I was greeted by a strong odour of old cigarettes. The bed was not made and the sheets were stained. The carpets were not vacuumed or cleaned. The bathroom had mold on the ceiling, one of the lights was ripped out. The sink pipes were removed and laying on the floor, with a wastebin under the sink to catch run off. Shower was dirty with no shampoo or soap provided. The phone had buttons and lights ripped out of it. Outside the room wood pallets were stacked up next to the stairwell. Ended up sleeping in my sleeping bag on the floor as it was late and -30 degrees. No answer from front desk after check in, no personnel there in the morning.

Avoid at all costs, surprised I didn't catch some disease though I did my best to not touch anything I didn't bring with me.

Worst room I have ever experienced. We were handed a portable electric heater at check in as they didn’t know if the room heater was working properly. Room smelled like weed, the only chair was covered in stains, tub surround was falling off, bathroom door didn’t close, and the tv cuts in and out every few minutes.

The hotel was very accessible and easy to find. We booked the room for family who were travelling through. The rooms were clean and the breakfast was delightful. It was a very affordable option for guests who need a quick place to rest while travelling.

I always call the property before booking. The owner assured me the breakfast room was open, but not available to those who used a booking service. So for the convenience I paid him extra money. I confirmed the breakfast was available at 6:30 am through Wyndham only to find a locked door in the morning. There was a faded note on the office door with a number to call and nobody answered or called back. The staff for the breakfast room lives on the property but the owner does not have them open on time.

We arrived at the hotel around 1 am to check in and it was quick. So quick no one even checked my ID to make sure that it was actually me.
We travelled with 2 small children so I entered the room before getting the sleeping children out of the car and when I entered the room the floors didn't feel clean and there was a hole in the wall where they were doing repairs to the pipes in the bathroom. It was not covered the the drywall was just leaning against the wall.
I uncovered a bed to find the pillows were not very clean. I sorted the beds out and then brought the kids into the room to go back to sleep.
The floors int he bathroom felt sandy.
The sign for breakfast states 7 am start but the doors to the hotel stay locked till 8 am and then when I mentioned it to the front staff I was told that is wasn't their problem and the sign was wrong.
