I'll start off with what we liked about Niagara Parkway Court. It's location was great. It was away from the hustle and bustle of the Niagara Falls area. It was a within walking distance of a couple restaurants, the river with a small pier for sitting and a few local businesses. It's located in a quiet area and has an upper deck for sitting. (Which we did use in the evening) The owner was polite when we checked in and there was a young lady that was working non-stop from 2:00 till 10:00 cleaning, sweeping, etc. They also had nice flowers and free internet. We did not have their breakfast because we had to leave early.
On the other hand I wonder what kind of hotels travelers are staying in to rate this so highly. It kind of reminded me of a handyman special, a hodgepodge of repairs and decorating that were easy and cheap to do. Our room did not look like one that was pictured.
I really would like to be able to give this a better overall rating. The owners are on the right track. I think that with some TLC and professional work this could be an excellent hotel. If you're just looking for some place to crash, a cheap rate and good location you'll be happy here.
We arrived around 9:30-10 in the evening after a 4 hour drive. When we walked in the office, (I believe her hame was Amy) tended to us very quickly. Check in was a breeze; less than 5 minutes. Check out was just the same.
We stayed in room 102 on the main level. The room was pleasantly decorated. The furniture was more than the mass produced, commercial type; it appeared to be a bed set that anyone could have in their home. We had a single queen bed, 2 nightstands, a mirrored dresser, a coffee table and a love seat. The room was lit with 4 lamps that could have been better; it was slightly dark in our room. The only major complaint we had about the room was the bed. We both have back issues and woke up with a sore back every morning. The mattress was very uncomfortable; it was very firm.
The room, as advertised, had a mini fridge and a microwave. It also included a coffee pot, plates and bowls, glasses/coffee mugs, silverware and dish soap/towel. There was also additional cupboard space to utilize for storage. While we didn't use the dishes and the coffee pot, we take advantage of the fridge. We brought drinks and munchies with us to help save money and the fridge came in handy.
The bathroom was traditional - sink, mirror, shower/tub combo and toilet. It was clean. Upon arrival the toilet had a sticker across the lid stating that it was sanitized. It also included a hair dryer, bar soap, shampoo/conditioner and a shower cap. The shower was clean and the water pressure was great. The first night I took a long hot shower and the water temperature dropped before I finished. I didn't see this as a problem I just shortened the shower and turned the water temperature down.
They provided us with clean towels, hand towels and washcloths. Unfortunately, the towels were small. If you like to use a bath sheet bring your own towel. The only other complaint I had with the towels was when we initially arrived we had 3 towels. When they cleaned our room, they changed the towels but only left us 2. I use 2 towels myself. So some extra towels would've been nice.
Our room did not have carpet in it which was actually kind of nice because we tracked in a lot of snow and ice. Unfortunately, the floor was extremely cold after you got out of the shower or up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. (This was something I did a few times each night as I am pregnant!)
The temperature of the room was on the cooler side so we had to crank the thermostat up. But we actually like to the room cooler when we sleep so it wasn't an issue.
We did not take advantage of the free transportation that was advertised because we enjoyed being able to go where we wanted, when we wanted.
The advertised free breakfast was okay. It consisted mostly of pastries/ muffins. They did provide bread and bagels to toast with a variety of jams, jellies and cream cheese. They also had a choice of 4 cereals but were more "kid friendly" sugary cereals. Twice, they provided frozen waffles and syrup. The only protein they served daily was hard boiled eggs - no breakfast meats. Finally they had a nice variety of juices, milk and coffee.
Other reviewers mentioned the distance to the falls. The motel is a 5 minute drive to the Falls and tourist attractions. Initially I was concerned with this but it was actually a beautiful drive down along the river. You pass the ice dam, the power plants, Dufferin Park and plenty of beautiful sights to see.
They advertise as having free WiFi and we never had any issues with it.
This is definitely not a luxurious 5 star hotel in the middle of the action, but they never claimed to be!
I'd have no problem staying here again except for the uncomfortable mattress.
Not even deserve 0 start. This hotel should be banned and closed down. Not sure how authorities are sleeping and allowing it to operate.
Rooms were extremely dirty. Does not have proper light. Light bulbs were fused and not working.
Bathroom was even more dirty. Bathtub was broken.
Everything was worst.
Authorities should close this so called hotel
When I made my original booking, I booked a stay for two nights. About four weeks before my stay, I changed my booking through Expedia to one night, and I received the confirmation email about the change. When I arrived, Sara checked us in for one night and we went our separate ways.
However, when I checked my credit card statements, I saw that I had two separate charges: I had a charge for the one night stay AND I had a charge for my original two night stay. Assuming it was an honest mistake, I called Sara and asked to have the second charge removed, since I changed my reservation and I clearly only stayed for the one night. She politely asked me to hold while she went back to check her records.
When she got back on the phone, she told me that I booked two separate reservations and that I was a "no show" for the second booking and was charged the full price as per the policy. I explained to her that I made the change about four weeks prior to arrival and that I have an email from Expedia confirming the change with the same itinerary number as the original reservation.
Inexplicably, Sara immediately became hostile and extremely aggressive. She told me that it was my mistake and told me to call Expedia. I tried to explain to her that Expedia didn't actually charge my card, since this was a "hotel collect" arrangement, meaning Expedia only facilitated the reservation. I handed her my card when I arrived and she made the charge at that time, so Expedia wasn't the one holding my money, Sara was. During my explanation she repeatedly interrupted me, saying "NO LISTEN TO ME," and at the end of my explanation she told me "It doesn't matter who has the money. YOU NEED TO CALL EXPEDIA."
I asked her why she thought I had booked two separate reservations when they were clearly under the same name and had an overlapping night. She aggressively responded: "Why is it MY responsibility to do everything? YOU should have told me when you checked in that you booked two reservations and MAYBE then we could have done something then but now we cannot do anything. We stayed up until 1 and then marked it as a no show. We thought it was two separate people so we did not say anything." I tried to explain to her that I received a confirmation email from Expedia that explicitly confirmed the change and that the email also said: "There's no need to call us to confirm your booking." I was met with further interruptions of "LISTEN TO ME. YOU NEED TO CALL EXPEDIA." She finished by condescendingly saying "I understand that you are upset that YOU made a mistake and that you want to get your money back. But we did not make a mistake, YOU did. I have been doing this for 10 years, so I know what I'm talking about. You probably are new to traveling so you made this mistake."
Since I was getting nowhere with the motel, I called Expedia, and sure enough, I was told that they could not do anything for me because they never handled the money during the transaction, they only booked the room for me. I called Sara back and told her Expedia's response and she told me to forward her the emails for the original booking and the changed booking so that she could call Expedia herself.
After forwarding the emails to Sara along with my contact information, I waited about a day and a half and called her back since she hadn't gotten back to me. She claimed that she called Expedia and that she was right, and told me (once again) that I needed to call Expedia.
Determined to get more information from Expedia this time, I asked her for the two booking numbers she got from Expedia so that I could double check them. I spent the next two and a half hours on the phone with Expedia and I went through three levels of customer support. During this time they also put me on hold for extended periods of time to contact the motel directly. I gave them the two booking numbers I got from Sara, as well as the itinerary number that I had, the email address I booked with, and the credit card I used. No one, not even the supervisor was able to find evidence of two separate bookings. All they were able to see was my modified one night stay.
At this point, I was confident enough to go directly to the credit card company to dispute the charge and within 24 hours the charge got removed. I'm not sure who took the loss in the end (the credit card company or the motel).
Unless you have the utmost confidence in your credit card company AND you expect everything in your trip to go perfectly, I would look elsewhere for your accommodations.
It was really astonishing how different Sara was before she received my money and after she received my money. My first impression of her was that she was friendly, but after this ordeal I realized that she cares more about desperately holding on to a two night charge than her reputation or her customers.
I went to the front desk and informed Sarah, the owner, that I was covered in welts and was worried that the room was infested with bed bugs, but would go to a clinic to confirm the cause. The doctor at the Morrison St. walk-in clinic diagnosed me as having chicken pox.I told him I had allready had that and was specifically worried about bed bugs.He said he didn`t think they were bites and instructed me to use calimine lotion to help the itching and that the welts would only last five to seven days.
I kept getting worse.I was suffering from sleep deprivation and my body was covered in welts, with more and more new welts every day.On the 15th I made an appointment with my family doctor as I was getting worse and worse outbreaks and had no clue as to why.I travelled to Burlington on the 17th for the appointment and she was unable to confirm a diagnoses of chicken pox, telling me she doubted that was the cause since none of the welts ever turned into blisters or leaked fluid,as chicken pox welts do.She gave me antibiotics and told me if I got any worse to go to the emergency departement.
I got much worse, and hadn`t had any sleep since the night of the 16th so I went to the emerg Sunday the 21st.The doctor there was also doubtful of chicken pox,and was unable to tell me why I kept getting new and worse outbreaks of welts.
Monday, the 22nd I was finally able to see and catch a very small insect bitting my leg.I then went online and learned a little bit about bed bugs, and how to catch them.I turned off the lights in my room and stood over the bed for about ten minutes then turned the light on and was again able to see and catch several small insects.I did this three times and was able to catch several more bugs.
I went back to the emerg at 4 am and showed the doctor the insects. After an examination he confirmed extensive bed bug bites over my entire body,as I had spent 17 nights in that bed.He then gave me a note confirming bed bugs in the room for me to show Sarah, the owner.
I went to the front desk around 8 am and told her what was happening, and requested $100 to have all of my clothes cleaned and to be moved to a new room. She said she didn`t think it was fair to ask her for money or to risk contaminating another room in her hotel with so little time left in the month. She asked me to leave voluntarily.I refused. She then had someone come over who told me that she was Sarah`s attorney. She refused to give me her name or the name of the law firm she worked for.She also told my brother, who was renting a room of his own with his wife, that she was their lawyer and asked him if he could get me to sign a release of liability.
In the meanwhile I had made several calls to local law offices and learned that her name was Jennifer Priestly and that she was not an attourney, only a para-legal.
I went back down to the office at which time Jennifer told me that I had to sign a papper saying that I was leaving voluntarily and with no complaints and the hotel would return the remainder of rent paid for the month of Febuary. If I refused to sign then they would have the police remove me and would not refund any rent.I refused to sign and the police were called.
Constable Jesse Miller was dispatched to the hotel and heard my side of things. He then spoke to Sarah and apparently she told him I had threatened her and she wanted me removed. She also asked him to get me to sign the release.Constable Miller told me that I had no rights as a tenant and that she could have me removed but had to return the balance of rent owing. He asked me if I was willing to sign her document but informed me that I was not obligated to and she could not withold the refund to get me to sign.I refused to sign but was indeed told I had to leave the premises.
I was given $75 and put out. That isn`t even enough for me to rent another room, not to mention that all my clothes and belongings had to be cleaned right away or I was risking bringing the bed bugs with me wherever I went.I was forced to pawn my beautiful Takamine acoustic guitar and my Playstation Three so I could get my things cleaned and rent a room for the remainder of the month and still have a little money to eat with.I spent eleven hours completely disinfecting the room I moved to because of extreme paranoia and was still unable to sleep because I feel things crawling all over my body.My doctor has put me on an anti-anxiety drug to help me cope with the mental anguish I am experiencing.
I have spent more then $700 on medication, trips to the doctors, taxis to the emergency department from Chippewa, cleaning all of my things and re-renting a room for the month. And then to add insult to injury after a visit from the health inspector at my request Sarah told him that I must have brought the bed bugs in.This is a bold face lie and she knows it.I spent five days on the first floor with no problems and if she thought I brought bed bugs in then why has she continued to rent out the room to other guests with no warnings to anyone.
If Sarah wants to avoid being sued in court she can make me a settlement offer but I have allready engaged an attorney with the law firm of Sullivan And Mahoney and they inform me the emotional stress alone, without the extremly poor treatment of me after it was proven there were bed bugs in the room could be quite substancial, since I was probably bitten thousands of times in those 17 days I spent in that bed.
Thank-you for taking the time to read my complaint and I hope something can be done so some other poor soul doesn`t have to experience the torture I endured.
