On the shore of the Athabasca River, Wapiti campground has nice private sites for tenting and electrical hook up spots for RVs. However, what makes Wapiti unique is that it operates year-round, offering 362 sites in the summer, and 93 winter camping spots with amenities like hot showers, electricity and fire rings. Wapiti is a great campsite for family outings at any time of year. It’s close to town for supply runs or rainy day movies, and in the winter campers often get first crack at the slopes and cross country trails (because to really appreciate a campfire, you have to use it to thaw your ski boots!)

Detailed Reviews
We had a great few nights here. It is a couple of minutes out of town but we really appreciated being a bit more connected with the outdoors whilst we were here and had a lovely time watching the wildlife wander past our tent - no bears but lots of deer.
Good facilities, always seemed clean. All four of us had a warm shower every day which, for a reasonable size campsite with free showers, we thought was impressive.
The sites aren't super private as they have had to fell trees as a result of there pine beetle but as well spaced out and we didn't feel intruded on at all.

The showers were lukewarm or boiling hot (too hot to shower). There were no adjustable settings so you got what you got temperature wise. Showers tended to be cold after midday. Also, you had to press the restart button every 10 seconds (I timed it) to continue the shower.
Objected to paying 15 dollars a night for an outdoor fire burner when we did not want or use it. It's not an option in an un-serviced site, you have to pay for it.
Dumping station was useful. Quiet at night. Near to Jasper for day outing.

Well, despite my previous review of this campground from last year, we still returned for our annual May camping trip in Jasper. The first come first served campgrounds are not open yet, so we had Wapiti and Whistlers to choose from. If you scope it out in advance, there are still a few quite nice spots available on the outskirts for tents or trailers with some tree cover in both campgrounds. Only a few with trees. Most have nice mountain views and neighbour views. The surrounding Jasper area has had more extensive tree removal compared to last year.
An elk walked across the creek and right through our site and several were seen on several occasions in the open areas of the campground. This is still a cool part of camping here. 3 bears seen near town. Deer, elk and sheep abundant.
We hiked Opal Hills by Maligne Lake and there was still lots of snow, but we went in early am and it was crusted over so you could manage fine with cleats. Steep and in the trees most of the way. We didn't do the loop due to avalanche, instead we went up to the lake lookout point 650m total elevation gain and back the same way. Lots of moose tracks, also possibly wolf tracks as there are no dogs allowed (much larger than coyote prints.) Spectacular views on a clear day. No one else seen on trail.

Good location, some sites are not well thought out, fire pits the wrong side, access can be tricky for larger units if you are arriving in the dark. not particularly well spaced either.
Staff were friendly, Amenities were good, tank dump, fresh water & firewood all available.
The river whilst very close is not that accessible.
Overall a good stay.

Our site is so crooked. Stumps do not allow you to back in appropriately. It sideways on a hill. Many trees down so very bare. Pot holes on the road are huge. No maintenance here at all! Site staff were interested in their iphones. No mention of this difficulty on the website. Nope. Not coming back. Actually would stay away from most federals sites as they clearly are not spending any money in AB.

Section AA. It’s not a campground, it’s a parking lot. Had to see it to believe Parks Canada would provide such a terrible campground. Just a huge piece of pavement, lines painted to mark your spot and electrical service. Washrooms and showers were very clean.

Many trees have been removed since our last visit. The mountain pine beetles damaged and killed a lot of the trees in the area. We were a little sad to see this, but the campground was still nice and well maintained. We had a spot in the D loop which fit our 4 person tent and vehicle nicely. We were also within walking distance of the washroom and shower buildings. The toilets were much nicer in the shower building. We forgot our car power converter, but we used the outlet in the washroom to blow up our air mattress. Cool experience to have elk visit our campsite early in the morning.
Firewood was provided and the staff were welcoming and helpful.

Just spent a couple days here. Bathrooms were clean, sites were nice. Free firewood with burn permit seems a bit different, instead of just paying for wood. Great location. Nicely wooded area, not too close to neighbours
