We ended up at the Elkhorn Lodge. It turned out to be a really nice place and very affordable, clean too. Banff is incredible. Everywhere you go you get a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains. The highlights of our time in Banff include hiking Tunnel Mountain, a chairlift ride at Mount Norquay, lunch at Chaya (a really tiny Japanese restaurant), breakfast at Bruno’s,

We spent two nights in this hotel which we had booked online. It wasn't quite what we expected. Calling it rustic is stretching it a little. True the original lodge is old but the updates are only outdated. Our whole room needed to be brought into this century, pretty well new everything is needed from carpet to bathroom it even smelled dated and the swag lamp was just plain ugly. Now for the good part the bed is comfortable and everything is clean. We slept well in this quiet location and the parking is free and plentiful. If you don't go modern or expensive in Banff then this is what you get:)

The location is good, we walked to town for breakfast and dinner and up to the Banff Springs Hotel for a coffee. There is a lovely walk to the falls from very close to the hotel and trails and paths that will take you all the way into the mountains if you are feeling fit.

Room Tip: Get an upper room if you can, the stairs may be a disadvantage but it will be quieter up there.

We looked around downtown Banff for accomodations since we hadn't made room reservations ahead of time. Besides being expensive, downtown also seemed a little too trafficy with both vehicles and tourists, so decided to head south on Banff Avenue. We went over a bridge onto Spray Ave and came across the Elkhorn Lodge. It looked like a relatively quiet location compared to the downtown area so checked on room availability. They had large suites w/1 or 2 bedrooms, kitchen, livroom, fireplace, etc but we opted for one of their queen bed, cable TV, coffee maker & small fridge rooms. Sounded quit reasonable at first $125, but then you add on a 2% tourism enhancement fee, 5% GST, 4% provincial tourism levy... well you do the math. Our room was quite small but was clean, had WiFi and the parking was free. The lady that ran it wasn't overly friendly but was efficient. The location turned out to be quiet for sleeping and good for checking out Banff. It was only about a 10 minute walk to all the downtown Banff restaurants, bars and shopping. And only about a 3 block walk up Spray Ave to the famous and immense Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, a historic Canadian Pacific Railway chateau which was about as impressive as the Prince of Wales hotel in Waterton.

What can I say but a fabulous experience. Stayed in Banff many times but often in the village. An easy walk to downtown from the Lodge while you feel like you are in the woods. Ideal spot with a 2 minute walk to the Fairmont Banff Springs to take advantage of that property. Steps from the Bow river and a walk to the Bow Falls or the golf courses. Wildlife abounds. Wait a bit and the property you are in will have deer wandering around mixed in with elk or, simply stretched out for a while outside your window. MAGIC. Add to this you have parking in/near a village where parking is near non existent or pay to park. You can walk anywhere from the Elkhorn Lodge and even avoid what can be problem traffic. Add to all of this experience the rooms are ideal if you want a Banff experience and the support you get from the on site management can't be beat. Go the distance to make your stay special. To sum up for me there is only one place I will stay when I return to Banff. I tried it and ended up staying for months and months. One of the best trips and times of my life. A bit like getting lost in the past of Banff.

My husband and I booked a trip to Banff from June 29th to July 4th 2024. And we booked a 4-night stay with Elkhorn Lodge from June 29th to July 3rd at booking.com. However, on the morning of 29th, we got message about WestJet cancelled hundreds of flights due to the airline strike including our flight to Calgary. Based on the situation on that day, we had to cancel our trip. So, I left messages at Booking.com for Elkhorn Lodge and also on their phone to see if there was any way we could get some money back from the room reservation, which is more than $1300. Katrin from Elkhorn Lodge called me back on my phone and told me that if I canceled my reservation from booking, they would re-sale the room. If they were able to re-sale it, I would get some money back. So, I canceled my reservation and I checked that the room became available on Booking.com on 29th with a higher price after my cancelation. On 30th, I checked the room availability of Elkhorn Lodge again on booking, they sold out all rooms. So, it means they sold our room. Today, July 5th, I contacted Katrin to see if we could get some refund based on what we talked before. She said they would not give us refund based on the policy, in which it had past the cancelation date. She basically completely ‘forget’ our conversation we had on the phone about the possible refund. She said you would get money back if you had a travel insurance or used credit card which would cover the losses like this. However, what I want to point out here is this is not about if I have other systems, which can cover the cost. This is really about how dishonest this business was. Katrin tricked me to cancel my room reservation, she at least got money doubled from that room, and now she rejected to give us the refund she promised before. This whole process has been really disgusting.

This is a nice little place within walking distance of downtown. The beds are comfortable and the service is friendly.

The room was quite resaonably priced and came with coffee, the usual shampoo/conditioner, and cable TV.

My only complaint is that the rooms don't have telephones. There is a pay-phone in the upstairs common area, but it mostly ate my change.

This hotel is a place to lay your head for a night or two. The price is reasonable for Banff. The furnishings are interesting. The room was clean.
The location is the best thing about the hotel. Easy walking distance to town, the Banff Springs Hotel (worth a visit) and walking trails. we took a raft ride down the river. We walked there in minutes.
I had no expectations about the hotel prior to the stay and I'm glad. It suited our needs just fine. However, I can see how it may not meet the standard of some travellers.

"We had suite 5. Good, placed around the back of the building. Both bedrooms and one bathroom on the first floor - I believe the sofa will convert into another bed and so the ground floor bathroom would then be useful."
