This hotel of 3 or 4 stars maximum its a classic from 50’s or 60’s .

You will easily notice old parts with poor maintenance and some areas refurbished .
Rooms were newer or refurbished, minimalist, functional , with big spaces , hammock, and great ocean views from rooms. No hair conditioner nor body lotion are available in rooms. ! Take yours!

This hotel is on a ladder equivalent to 10 stories building with no elevators.
Not recommended for elderly, wheelchairs, etc. You will easily go down more than 100 steps on stoned stairways with different sizes, heights of steps. I strongly recommend the use of handrail to avoid accidents. One of our friends didn’t use it for seconds and felt down. She had to stay at room for the rest of the stay with excellent room service.

Breakfast it’s included with limited good mexican dishes and excellent service. Amir & Betzy ( La güera de rancho) gave us great and friendly service.

Beach towels are available only at beach level 100 steps down. Those are old towels thanks to tight control on towels.

Shadows to lay down by the beach are the best I’ve ever seen in Mexican Beaches since they are bellow huge trees.
Food and service by the beach are easily forgotten.

Thank you Julio L for your detailed review, we have taken note of every point (all of them relevant). Certainly being a rustic hotel embedded in the rainforest, it does not have an elevator, so we have special attention for guests with limitations to go down stairs. We will pass your kind comments on to the employees mentioned. We are very pleased that you enjoyed our views, beach and liked the shadows of the trees, it is one of our greatest treasures. Come back soon!

Loved this hotel. Laid back and unpretentious clinging to the hillside with views over the bay. Reception and access to the street at the top and private beach area under the palms at the bottom. It was very quiet - only about 50% full. No problem getting beds by the pool or loungers on the beach. Rooms are nothing fancy but the Playa Suites were big with a nice big terrace with a hammock, tucked behind the trees and steps from the pool and beach. All the staff were friendly, especially the ladies in the restaurant at breakfast. The bar on the beach is a bit unloved and under-utilised. Could do with bit of a makeover and more motivated staff to make it more enticing to buy drinks or food.
The wifi is good and works on the beach too which is a bonus.
its a $60 taxi ride to the city centre (5 mins) and a standard $400 taxi rate to the airport (15 mins)

We stayed in one of the Linda Vista rooms, and it was very nice. The room was big, very clean, had good air conditioning system, and everything we needed. The balcony with the amazing view of the bay and hammock was a great spot to hang out on. We purposely didn't leave any food out to ensure we didn't attract bugs, and just kept everything in the refrigerator. Yes, there are alot of steps at the resort, but I took it as a way to get a little exercise. The steps are well marked with yellow lines and sturdy handrails, so no issues with feeling unsafe. The beach front is huge, easy to find a comfortable lounge chair, has an easy access bar, and all the basics needed for a relaxing day.

This is the best place on Zihaatanejo to stay! We had playa suite room with a huge terrace and fabulous view of the water and beach! The beds are very comfortable. The bar is set where you have a beautiful unobscured view of the sunset as well as happy hour from 6-8pm nightly. The pool is set to look over the beach and people watch while in the pool. The restaurant has very courteous staff and a wide variety of food options. We had breakfast included with our room and it was really good, nice options of food not just continental, and a convenient way to start the day. The hotel is on the playa de ropa beach with a bartender serving you as you lay on the beach in the lounge chair under your umbrella and table. There are stairs to each level of the hotel. If you have issues with your legs, unfortunately, you will miss out on the best option to stay. My husband and I are 59 years old and 63 years old, not athletic and enjoyed the stairs since we were mainly beach bums and the stairs were the only form of exercise we got while there. Though there is no "concierge" the front desk staff helped with everything needed. The staff was very kind and promptly responsive.

We have come to this place on a regular basis since our kids were toddlers (now they are 13 and 14). During these years, we've witnessed how their facilities have grown old and deteriorated year after year. They've steadily increased their prices while not investing a dime. It's a shame! It has a premier location and view, its restaurant food and service is fair but it is poorly run. We will search for a better spot for our future vacations. Adios Catalina 😢😢😢

Made a lot of improvements since last year. Great beach service by Memo. He was always checking in with us to see if we needed food or drinks. This is a vast improvement from past years when you had to go to the bar to order anything. Lunch on the beach, chicken quesadillas with beans and guacamole for 105 pesos was enough for both of us. We only had one breakfast and one dinner at their restaurant. Fabulous views from there. Breakfast seems to be their best meal served. Dinner, enchiladas were OK but husband stuffed chicken breast was very good. Great Happy Hour 6-8 at the Sunset Bar, service by Hector was great.
We stayed in a Playa Suite just above the beach and 50 steps down to the palapa beach.

We have been coming to the Catalina for 25 years. We have found some changes most unsettling that future guests should consider before booking.
The Catalina allows dogs in rooms with no apparent dog policy or enforcement of any restrictions on dogs, where they can go to use the bathroom (in our case it was directly in front of our room on the patio), whether dogs can remain in the room while guests go out and bark and disturb other guests, whether dogs are allowed in restaurants pool area, bar on beach, beach itself in the mornings. I woke up one morning last year with flea bites all over my arms and face.
I suggest a restricted dog walk for dogs to use the bathroom that are not in areas where humans sit, do yoga, etc and not in front of rooms to respect other guests privacy.

The Catalina needs a noise policy and rules. Guests who want to play music and party all night in the room next to you should not be allowed. That’s what the bar is for. A 9 pm quiet time should be observed. Music should not be allowed to be played on the beach by guests at any time. The restaurant and beach bar now have speakers and play music all day. This is disturbing for some guests who want to hear the waves and who come for relaxation and quiet.

The Catalina should not allow 4 -5 adults to stay in one room

The Catalina should have a no smoking policy in rooms, on patios and terraces, and in palapas on the beach. (We are too close together to allow smoking).

You have read all the othe reviews and comments about lots and lots of stairs, room quality (rustic) views (wonderful) beach (wonderful if no music or smokers)

Food service in restaurant is spotty, chef is new and trying. Beach service excellent.

The problem currently is that you never know if you are going to get loud noisy people in the room next door to you (walls are thin) who want to party all night of dog owners who have no respect for your privacy or enjoyment and think the area in front of your room where you do yoga should be their public dog walk and bathroom. Or if when you go to the beach you will have to leave because day pass guests are smoking and playing loud rap music. Or if the people leave their dogs in the room alone and they bark all day.
So it’s a hit or miss whether you are going to have a peaceful enjoyable vacation.
We have not these last two years
And management really seems to not be too concerned with these issues.
So regretfully we will not be returning

The problem currently, and the reason I gave only 2 stars, is that you

It's a classic, the first hotel on La Ropa beach. There are 250 stairs from the lobby to the beach. If your not in shape before you go you will be by the time you leave. The bar and restaurant are about half way between the lobby and beach. Casitas, bungalow and Suites scatter on the hillside. We have been staying at the Catalina for years. First in a small casita, then bungalow and this trip a Beachside Suites. Loved our room, big porch with beautiful views of the sea. Good working aircon, refrig, and comfy beds. Ate at the restaurant twice for breakfast, dessert and drinks once. We ordered lunch on the beach one day where you can also get beer, and cocktails. Our favorite part of the hotel are the palapas on the beach.
A shout out to a couple of employees...Javier, thank you and two of the hardest working employees, Antonio who works so hard keeping the palapa beach area pristine clean. Alfredo who does it all, carrying everyone's luggage from the lobby to their rooms and so much more.

It really saddens me that I must leave a poor review but in this case it is warranted. We booked our room directly with the hotel three weeks before arriving. Our hope was to possibly get a better deal while helping the hotel by cutting out the middleman....this was our first mistake. We had read other reviews so our expectations were not high but for the price we were paying we expected something halfway decent. We arrived and were told we were upgraded to a better room...sounds good. The room was at the upper part of the property with an amazing view. That is where the beauty stopped. We spent the next 5 hours with maintenance coming and going from our room. The patio door lock didn't lock, the frig did not work, the shower flooded the bathroom. To their credit they eventually were able to fix most of the issues but didn't seem to concerned. The rest of the stay was fine but as others have mentioned, the place is in desperate need of an overhaul. The staff tries really hard but are very aware of the problems that surround them. I felt sorry for them. If you can get a decent rate (which we didn't) and don't mind a dilapidated hotel with stunning views and a hard working staff, then go for it. Otherwise, there are many better options to choose from in this area. We will return someday, just not to the Catalina Beach Resort.

We were told this was a good place to go. I’m am not a complainer at all and we didn’t stay here but we spent the day here. Minimum charge 500 pesos flwhich is included in your food and drinks. Would have been good but the service is sucked and had a hard time getting anyone to serve us all day when it wasn’t really busy. Food was good but took an hour to get. There is a little place at the south end the locals call the “shack” doesn’t even have power but has spectacular service. Go there instead of you are ok with great service and food.
