Secrets Vallarta Bay Puerto Vallarta garners mixed reviews, with guests applauding its prime location and exceptional service, noting the staff's attentiveness and the range of amenities like pools and spa facilities. However, some travelers feel the costs outweigh the value, highlighting pricey upgrades and unwanted upselling. While the resort's overall cleanliness receives commendation, the atmosphere is received with ambivalence due to dated decor and pervasive noise. Room maintenance issues also detract from the experience, despite the resort's popular live entertainment and convenient location.

We prefer all-inclusive resorts and if they are adult only that's a huge bonus! We initially booked at Now, the family resort next to Secrets, but were upgraded to Secrets, and WOW so glad we were! We were booked in the Privilege building and I would highly recommend choosing the Privilege option. We were on the 7th floor very close to the beach and it was a beautiful view, the room was very nice and well appointed. We were a bit worried about the LOUD bands that so many said played daily, luckily that was not the case during our stay, only on the first day. Caesar at the breakfast buffet was awesome, we sat in his section every morning but his day off, he was so nice and chatted with us all the time, great asset to Secrets. We ate lunch most days at the pool Barefoot Grill, and it was awesome, tacos to order, ceviche, pizza, and much more, we did eat at Oceanas above the swim up bar a couple of lunches, one lunch they cooked up the Mahi Mahi my husband caught that morning, and it was delicious! We at dinner there one night and it was really good. The beach had sooooooo many rocks for our first couple of days, then they vanished, but the ocean is great once you get past the bit of rocks (small). Emilio, the beach security was so nice and helpful, he would watch over us and keep vendors at a comfortable distance, he would make sure we had chairs and tables every morning on the beach where he knew we wanted them. Pablo was the best bartender, he was at the swim up bar and took top notch care of us daily. Junior was our beach waiter and made sure we never went without our Don Julio, he was great! Noeh and Elizabeth the pool concierges lived up to the hype, they would sit and chat with us every day and made sure we had anything and everything we wanted or needed to make our stay the best ever, they are huge assets to Secrets, and let them clean your sunglasses, so worth it. It is whale season and we got to see a mom and baby whale breach one day at lunch, amazing! We ate next door on the Now side at Himitsu and it was really good, great service too! Most other nights we ate off site at places we always go to and some new ones. Every evening we sat in the lobby's of both sides to watch the sunset, so pretty. The casino on the Now side was pretty dead, we tried roulette a couple of nights. We were there to celebrate our 21st anniversary and it didn't disappoint! Would go back for sure specially if we got the upgrade deal we got this trip! Maria from guest concierge took great care of us and our reservation and upgrade to the Secrets Privilege, thank you! Hope to see you soon!

First, Mexico and Secrets takes COVID seriously. When we arrived Jalisco had gone into a more restricted phase and everyone adhered to it. All stores (even mom and pop), restaurants and the resort took your temperature and made you use hand sanitizer anytime you went into a building. We felt safer in Puerto Vallarta than in California.

The resort is a little short handed due to the lack guests and therefore staff. The staff is very helpful, there just needs to be more of them, especially at the pool and later in the night in the lounge area. The waiters were working as fast as they could, but it still took 30 minutes for someone to come by to ask what you would like, since there were only 2 waiters serving all guests at the pools. Housekeeping was also behind schedule due to a lack of employees. Our room was usually cleaned between 5:30 and 6:30, which was when we we getting ready for dinner, so a few times, we just asked for more water.

As other people have mentioned, the resort is great, if you are not a foodie and will drink anything. Oceana, the seafood restaurant was not good, which was a disappointment. The breakfast buffet was great and had a lot of choices. The Asian restaurant was okay. We ended up eating every dinner at Bordeaux, the French restaurant. The food was great. I highly recommend booking the Chefs Table, which is dinner in a private room in the kitchen, where a meal and wine pairings are prepared just for you. The chef and sommelier present you each dish and wine. It was a wonderful experience. I also highly recommend booking a table in the wine cellar. This meal is a six course tasting menu, free except you must purchase a bottle of wine or wine pairings. There are good wines at all price levels.

The alcohol selection is okay. Make sure to look at the bottles they have and specifically request the alcohol by brand. If you don't, you will get well brands. Even then, the drinks weren't great. We drank a lot of wine and late night after dinner drinks.

We were easily able to take taxis to downtown Puerto Vallarta for about $6 each way. Do this! The stores and street tacos are amazing! Most street vendors start to open around 3, so don't eat too many tacos if you are planning on eating at Bordeaux that night!

The only downside to this resort is the UVC presentation, if you have to site through it. The 90 minute promised presentation was 3 hours. They were pushy and rude. It ruined our day and vacation.

This has been our 3rd year in a row vacationing at Secrets Vallarta Bay & for good reason, Location, location, location; 10-15 min away from airport, from the Boardwalk of Puerto Vallarta and local shops are right outside the gates of the resort. Safety/security of the resort & Puerto Vallarta in general is evident. Mountains add a dimension of beauty that is unparalleled and the resort is nestled between them and the Pacific Ocean's Bandares Bay. Sunsets are magical as the grounds and the 3rd floor open air lobby face west, enabling you to see the sun slowly sink into Bandares Bay. The attention to cleanliness and limiting the spread of COVID-19 is spot on. Hotel capacity was reduced. All staff within the resort wear face masks & most are also with face shields. Hand sanitizer is readily available on the resort, upon entry, upon exit & everywhere in between. Pevonia Spa is clean, calming & healing. Attention to food safety is paramount & remains very delicious. Rooms are cleaned daily & even the TV remote is sealed in a plastic envelope. Shopkeepers outside the gates & downtown Puerto Vallarta also wear face masks, provide/use hand sanitizer & require patrons to do the same. It is evident that Yann Le Guillou, VIP Services General Manager, is running a "tight ship" & wants the patrons of Secrets Vallarta Bay to have a glorious vacation. The attention to detail required by Juan Chavez, Secrets Vallarta Bay/Now Amber Food & Beverage Manager, enabled us to always know we would be served wonderful & delicious meals. The following special people at the resort went out of their way to make our vacation absolutely perfect; they are professional, thoughtful, generous, patient, attentive & most importantly have become our friends: Nirvana Serra Bonett/Preferred Lounge Head Butler; Fernanda Cravioto of Unlimited Vacation Club, Alberto Alvarado of Unlimited Vacation Club; Mayra Santillan/Market Cafe Manager; Aura Rosales/Pevonia Spa. A very special recognition to Daniel Medina. We first met Daniel at Market Cafe 3 years ago & always look forward to seeing him & always request him to be our waiter. He represents the resort in the best light possible. He is our friend and now part of our family. Thank you, David & Sharon.

Room and Service
The room and the service were great

Location
Recommend bringing foot protection to walk on the beach and enter the water

Amenities
The amenities at this hotel are average.
The spa was not bad.
The night entertainment was between average or below that.
They don't have true facilities for shows; i.e., for some shows, people in front of you will block your view.

The people
The people working for the hotel are amazing in terms of service and attitude
If the people were not as good as they are, I would have had a rough time with the rating, since, perhaps it would have been below 2 out of 5.
Special mention to the following people:
1) Carlos Miranda, our concierge at the Preferred Floor
Not only does he have an amazing attitude, but he was also quite efficient and effective at answering every single question or request we had about the hotel and the surroundings. The hotel management should be proud of having such a great person in their operational team.

2) People at the restaurants
Special kudos to Homero, Pablo at the Market Cafe.
They were amazing in terms of service, attitude and handling any questions we had.
Also, special thanks to Diana and Fernando at the Market Cafe for their service.

Besides that, we are very grateful for the great work by Jaime Pena, the water sports man (amazing guy taking responsibility for people safety); Aldo, in the entertainment team; Salvador, the tennis coach; Lourdes, our room person.

3) Perspective as a UVC member
As UVC members, this hotel offered the worst experience we've ever had in comparison to other UVC hotels.
a) The hotel charges UVC members for the beach beds aka Balinesas. I consider this a huge insult for members who paid such an expensive membership
Note: All the other UVC hotels we stayed at (at least 3 of them) have a special beach VIP area available for UVC members.

b) The food items in the "Preferred Club area" were not any better than those at the Market Cafe; i.e., no differentiator at all. At other hotels offer items of higher quality that create a differentiator for UVC members.

c) For UVC members, this hotel restricts access to the Hydrotherapy circuit to only 1 per stay, whereas at other hotels, e.g., Now Safari, we were able to access it as many times as we desire during our stay.
We did express these concerns to the people from UVC at the hotel; however, we were not impressed at all with the answers provided by them. For example, instead of trying to accommodate our concerns, they would give us classical bureaucratic responses such as: "these are the policies in the hotel" etc.
They wouldn't allow us to talk to their manager.
We were able to talk to their manager till the moment of check-out, who asked us to fill a claim regarding our experience.
Having said that, we are very disappointed with our experience as UVC members at this hotel.
Besides that, this is the only hotel where we got sick from the food.

We finally made it back to secrets PV. We arrived on July 10th with a departure on July 18th. We were greeted by our UVC rep Atef. The property is now practicing a whole new level of cleaning standards due to COVID that made us feel very comfortable.
The property has reduced the capacity of the amount of guests therefore not all restaurants are open every night.

Our morning's normally started with breakfast at the Market Cafe with service from two amazing guys! Cesar and Humberto are enthusiastic and can't do enough for you! I could only wish I had as much energy as you two. Thank you guys, we can't wait to see you on our next visit.

We had several dinners with Chef Marco at Bordeaux and his staff of Sergio and Emilio. Each meal was several courses and was different each night. Chef Marco's cuisine is very special and well worth the small additional cost to enter the wine room. Sergio suggested some Mexican wine and we loved it so much we purchased the same bottle several nights in a row. Emilio is always on top with his service and his flaming coffee, it is a show not to be missed!
Out by the pool we had exceptional service at the cabana from several people over our stay, including Erick, Jr, Fernando, Manuel, Jorge and Omar. You guys are the best!
Thanks for always making our vacation special! Miguel we missed you this time as you were working on the Now Amber side, we hope to see you in February when we will be back for the Super Bowl festivities.
The pool concierges Noeh and Elizabeth will help you with anything you need, Great people to talk to and they will be more then happy to get the water spots off of your sunglasses!
The Assistant Food and Beverage Manager, Carlos Diaz and his fantastic Team Cynthia and David are the hardest working people. Thank you for the special service and the suggestions on some special bottles of tequila that we had not had before.
Those bottles would have cost me a fortune at a pool in Las Vegas, thank you!!!

We had dinner one night outside with Fransisco Garcia on the second story of Oceana. The sunset, food and service was amazing! Sometimes Fransisco works on the Now Amber side in Capers. You will not regret having dinner with him. He is a great guy!!

The entertainment staff of Canelo and Pollo will keep you moving if you desire. Too much exercise for me on vacation! LOL!!

Upon check out we met Nirvana in the Preferred Club lobby. She was very helpful explaining our final bill and was a pleasure to talk to.

In final we were very happy with our vacation at SVB! Please understand that not everything will be open every day. It's just like Vegas, you can not open everything when you are running at about 30 percent occupancy. We will be at Breathless Cabo next month and will continue to support Mexico!

We just returned from 10 days at Secrets PV and had a wonderful time. This is our 2nd time at a Secrets Resort (went to Hautulco Secrets last year) and had an equally great experience! We would like to thank the entertainment crew, especially Omar, Rodd, Pollo, Luis & Jasmine. They worked very hard to make our stay excellent with activities all day. Julianna and Susan were awesome yoga instructors and we enjoyed sailing with Jaime. Carmone provided great bar service at pool bar.
We had dinner in French wine room twice and once in Italian wine room. Emilio is an excellent server and Chef Marco went above and beyond to prepare outstanding meals. Ramon was helpful with selecting wine. Juan was our server in Italian wine room and also did an amazing job.
We splurged on dinner at Chef’s Table with Emilio again as our server and Chef Javier Joya preparing an unbelievable 7-course dinner paired with wine.
Buffet hostess, Diana, always had a smile on her face!
The shows were entertaining, grounds impeccable, and service over the top. The only negative comments would be the beach is rocky, there are weddings almost daily(can be noisy at night with music) and rooms could be updated (also, mattresses could be flipped) We would try Secrets again in another location.

Visit early November 2020. Outstanding smaller resort not too far from the airport (but far enough not to hear air noise) and close to the Malecon. Clean swimmable beach but not a great walking beach. Food was excellent especially the Bordeaux and Mexican restaurants. The chef's table experience was really memorable. The pool was great and we felt safe as people were spread out and maintained decent social distancing. The COVID-19 protocol at the resort and in Mexico for that matter was beyond what we expected and much better than most of America. Mexico is taking it seriously. I never saw anyone in a shop, restaurant, taxi, store, etc. without a mask on. All food servers on the property had masks and face shields on, even in mid-80's heat. So we felt super safe. They took everyone temperature upon arrival and before entering any restaurant and they required you to use hand sanitizer.
The drinks were good and the wait staff was outstanding. Oscar, Omar, Jose, Hugo need extra recognition. In the Mexican restaurant we had some of the best service we've ever had in Mexico from our waiter, Ignacio. He was exceptional.
We didn't use the spa so we can't comment but the prices are high so we decided to try both of the massage tents just off property on the beach. There is a blue tent by Norma and a pink tent by another business owner. Hands down spend the extra $5 ($35 for a 60 min message) with Norma in the blue tent! All of her staff are professionally trained and my wife had the best deep tissue massage from the owner, Norma, and she said it was very spa like. I had Norma's sister and she was also really good.
This secrets location exceeded my expectations in almost every area. I'd recommend not doing a preferred room as there is no view of the sunset (though a great ocean view) and the other preferred amenities are lacking honestly. No preferred pool and the bar is only slightly better than the lobby bar.

Lucky V wrote a review Jan 2020
We enjoyed New Year’s Eve and a few days after at this nice resort. The location is excellent, between the PV airport and the Malecon, so either one is only a few minutes Uber/taxi drive away. Our room (upgraded to Preferred Club) was large and clean. The Preferred Club had its own little lobby bar with food throughout the day, which was a nice touch. Food was tasty. Service was excellent, at every location. Gym is well equipped. The casino has a nice little sports bar, great for watching games on ESPN. Overall, one of the nicer resorts.

A few downsides were the very very very firm pillows, so bring your own if you care. Also, they could use some more dining options right on the pool/beach area; at least for us, we don’t come to Mexico to eat indoors. There are only about 10 tables at the Oceana restaurant that have ocean view. But, the key reason for 4 stars is the towel situation. There is no limit to how many towels each guest can take; they just sort of put them out there in a few spots for guests to help themselves. This would seem to be a nice touch, but it doesn’t work. First, often there are no towels to be found when you want them, and because there is no central place to get towels, you end up scavenging the resort to find some. More seriously, if there is no limit to how many towels a guest can take, there is no limit to how many pool/beach chairs they can reserve. And the result is what you’d expect: walk out to the beach/pool area in the morning, and there is not a person in sight but every chair has a towel and a book or magazine on it (see photos). In fairness, Secrets has a very clear policy against chair reservation, and they stood by it when we had a situation where we ended up sitting in chairs they went reserved and unused for hours. But it still makes it for unnecessarily stressful and uncomfortable situation (especially when the chair reserver was not a particularly pleasant person). All resorts in Mexico have this issue; but having no limits on towels exacerbates it at Secrets.

Just returned from 2 weeks at secrets the hotel is very clean and the staff are fantastic, the room was big and the air con was superb, felt a little worse off than others as we were on the 2nd floor and no sea view, if you want a decent sea view you need to be above 5th floor. The restaurants were very good with the exception of the Mexican which we thought the food was very bland, I'd hoped the Mexican food was going to be amazing sadly not. Now to the 2 hotels Now Amber and secrets, if I was to return I'd go to Now Amber, secrets can use Now facilities and restaurants but not the other way around however we knew plenty of Now residents coming over to secrets nobody is challenged and it will save you HUNDREDS of pounds. The sunbeds are covered in towels very very early, if you want a decent spot you'll seriously have to be out before 7am, there was large area set up every day for about 12 Americans that didn't even turn up until after lunch, there is live and loud music played every day around the pool it is a very lively resort! The swim up bar pool known as the pee pool was always full of very loud Americans drinking lots. Overall a good break in a very clean hotel with great staff and food with a few niggles.

AMR and Secrets/Now Amber have an awesome team in Puerto Vallarta. They have implemented the highest cleaning standards and you constantly see the staff cleaning and wiping common touched surfaces. The staff wear masks and gloves but continue to perform their services with a smile. The people of PVR have always provided the highest degree of services. While the guests were few the staff was ready to serve. We spent a day on the Now Amber side in my sisters swim out room on the preferred side. Room 1175. Perfect end location to enjoy a pool that allowed us to physical distance from the rest of world. Room service was incredible - delivered hot and on time. Great selection allow us to create our own little buffet for our family. Miguel was a drink server for the pool area. He kept the drinks coming and always made sure we were satisfied- at the end of his shift he brought our group 2 melons made into faces with a variety of fruit. What a wonderful surprise- way to go above and beyond. The secrets side was a little quieter than the Now Amber side but as secrets guests we get the privilege of enjoying both resorts. We absolutely loved our stay. The food was incredible. Carlos and Jose from Tamarindo took fabulous care of our table. Every food item was prepared and presented like you see on top food shows. Our concierge Fernanda was an impeccable host and insured we were well taken care of. We had a few minor issues with our room (to be expected since the resort was closed for several months) but when we reported the issue to,the preferred front desk they had each issue taken care of right away. Again these were minor but impressed how quickly they responded. I give kudos to the entire staff for making these adjustments given our current COVID issues but my wife and I both agree we could not have felt safer with all AMR and its staff have undertaken to make our time very memorable. We strongly recommend this resort. You will not be disappointed. Thank you everyone at secrets and Now Amber. Our 2nd home!

Our friends did while we were there. There are areas around the property that are designated as well. They also smoked on the private beach, which didn't raise concern with the resort.
