We made it through hurricane Lidia while staying at this hotel. The staff made sure everyone was taken care of when the power went out. They worked hard to have the power restored and made it as easy for us as possible during such a difficult time. The electricity and hot water was out of service for three days; however, Vallarta Sun Suites did everything it could to accommodate us. They gave us high powered flashlights and made sure we had water. While the power was off, the staff made sure that the grounds were cleaned and safe for the guests. There were a lot of tree limbs and other debris on the property. When the power came back on, they continued to treat us well. This hotel is excellent and I highly recommend it. The location is fantastic, the rooms are extremely comfortable and very well insulated. It is a block and a half from the ocean. The price cannot be beaten. Extremely reasonable. We heard no noise with the doors closed with the air conditioner and fans running. Everything is in excellent condition and the kitchenette is very well stocked, great refrigerator, microwave, toaster, oven and stove top burners. There were three of us, and we had plenty of room, never got in each other’s way. A big closet with a lot of clothes hangers. We will definitely stay here again.

This review is a little late as we stayed there December 2012. We stayed in the Suites which had a small but fully functional kitchen with coffee pot, microwave, blender, fridge, stove plus plates/pots etc. Everything you need.
We absolutely loved this spot for it's great value and location...only 3 blocks from the beach right in Old Town close to all the bars and restaurants. The rooms are basic but clean and the grounds are kept very clean as well by Carmen. There is a small pool with loungers which we used every morning before heading out for the afternoon/evening.
We did a longer stay (4 weeks) and it was perfect for this. We are coming to PV again Winter 2013 and will be staying at the Hotel this time.
Bottom line: Great location, clean, great value, very friendly, helpful staff.

I picked the Vallarta Sun because of reviews on this site. I was not disappointed. It is important to note, however, that there are actually 3 separate places - the suites, the hotel and the hostel. I stayed in the hotel where there was a mix of people staying for a week or two and some staying a month or two. With less than 20 rooms, and a pool in the middle, if you want to mix with the other vacationers it is easy. I met some great folks there. All 3 places are a 3 minute walk to the beach, shopping and lots of restaurants. I definitely would stay here again!

Good hotel & manager/staff. Stayed on the top floor where there was an OK view of the ocean. Bed linen upgrade would be nice, ones that actually fit the bed would be too. I have stayed here 4 times over the last 4 winters. Twice for 2 weeks & twice for 0ne month. Great location & close to everything. I was thinking of trying another place out. I was just thinking about it but after seeing the towel game played everyday by some lady I decided a move was now important to me. Management should have said something to her. I do not really mind if you reserve a lounger then use it but to reserve it then leave for breakfast and or shopping for 2 to 3 hours then I do mind that. Plus while trying to relax by the pool she would be in the palapa playing video games, watching soaps & skyping with the sound full on. (for hours) Earphones would have let all the other guests have a more relaxing time. Anyway thanks to Ricardo & staff. I did have 3 great stays there but can not take a chance of my once a year vacation being ruined by a very rude & ignorant guest. Gracias y adios. KMG.

Overall, I very much liked the hotel: clean and fresh rooms, good location on a hilly street. The pool is great, and the hotel has definite flavor of Mexico (not like many chain hotels). The balcony was amazing: it is nice to sit there, enjoy the view, and sip tequila (ask for a top floor room). The staff was very accommodating in allowing us to check out a bit later.

I am not giving 5 stars, because the hotel is rather basic. However, it is good for those who do not care about 24-hr reception, English-speaking staff on duty, elevator, etc.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Vallarta Sun Hostel. The rooms were not so cozy but it didn't matter so much. There was a beautiful pool upstairs with several lounge chairs. It was brilliant! Most of the staff were extremely helpful and informative. However, unfortunately, I feel it must be noted that one staff member seemed to act quite inappropriately towards single female tourists. Hostels should always provide safe environments for guests. When the guest begins to feel uncomftorable because of inappropriate comments or actions from male workers, there is a problem. It seemed that this particular person was working there for the purpose of meeting single tourists for personal reasons. Mexico is Mexico and tourism is tourism, but not everyone is looking for intimate encounters during their tourism adventure in Mexico. Otherwise, the hostel was fantastic.
I would recommend someone to stay here, even though I may not return, unfortunately. I think the management should take a closer eye into the staff being hired. Personal safety should actually be a hostels too priority. Otherwise, all other staff members were lovely! One of the managers, or assisting managers, Bryant I believe, was a great source of tourism information and advice! Mixed feelings about this hostel... I would recommend it but keep an eye out for the above mentioned.

Thanks a lot for your comments, its unfortunately that you didn´t mentioned it to us while this particular volunteer was still with us so we could take actions, even though he is no longer with us we already reported him to the agency that sent him. We really keep an eye on our staff all the time and never had a bad report from this guy, we want to apologize for the inconvenience and hopefully you can give us the chance to have you here with us again.

I stayed here for 7 nights in October for $15 USD/$195 MXN per night (there may have been a 1 week rate but I paid day to day). Unlike a previous review, I WASN'T able to pay by credit card, but both pesos and American cash was fine. Also I think the owners were spending more time in their newer hostel in Sayulita so I never saw them. The staff here, however, were FANTASTIC, incredibly helpful and friendly.

The hostel itself is in the Romantic Zone (Old Town) in a safe and convenient (and pride-friendly) location--two blocks from the beach, and less than that to cafes, restaurants, a convenience store, etc. It was very clean, and my 6-bed dorm had an ensuite bathroom. The air circulation could have been better in the bathroom but there's another shower and toilet option that you're also free to use. The beds were comfy with reading lights, and they provide HUGE lockers although in a pretty high traffic area.. at least for my particular room. The A/C came on from 8pm-8am. :)

The common area was really conducive to meeting people, the kitchen spacious and with filtered water, the front door always locked (hooray security!), but the cherry on top was the incredible pool located upstairs (shared with the people at the Vallarta Sun Hotel and Suites). Medium sized, gorgeous, and great lounging area there too..

I'd highly recommend this hostel. Also, save yourself some cash and take the public bus here rather than a taxi--it's only $6.50 MXN and the bus stops only a few blocks away. Both El Centro and Tunel work.

Downside? No free breakfast although some literature says they offer this. Instead they have a deal with a family owned restaurant a few doors down for a $20 MXN breakfast of tea/coffee, fresh fruit and bread with jam. It would've been nice if I could pay by card as well, and a little table in the room would be handy if you get stuck with a (very high) top bunk.

I have stayed at the Sun Suites in Puerto Vallarta for over 10 years now. It is a fine establishment that is always clean, safe, convenient, and the perfect choice for me. I have found the staff to be excellent in every respect and look forward to seeing them every year like long lost friends. There are over 30 restaurants located within a few block of the Sun Suites. There are other stores and the beach within a block and a half. I think the view from my suite is just perfect for relaxing and enjoying the Mexican neighborhood and atmosphere. I plan to be staying there every December for as long as possible and consider it my "second home." I can't say enough positive things about this fine location and staff!!

In the same building as the somptuous hotel is à youth hostel, runned by the same person. Even if we announced our arrival ahead, we were not nicely served. We had no reduction for the kids, as it usually is in EVERY other youth hostel we visited in the world. No reduction with my HI card. Worst of all she took only US dollars. Hello! We are in Mexico... Had to pay with my credit card. Finally, no room with all the family together. Not brave enough to politely ask two person to trade dorm room so we could be together. It was finally the most expensive place we have slept in ALL our trip to Mexico. No need to say we were out of there the next morning.

At the time of my stay, they did not have a bar. All the rooms on the second floor and above had balconies. The bottom rooms had views to the swimming pool.

Do not get in a Taxi at the Airport. Take the foot bridge and it only takes a few minutes to cross, there a cab will be 1500 pesos to Zona Romantica.
