Camino Real Zaashila Huatulco has a unique design, with a Contemporary Mediterranean style; this place submerged in an astonishing natural surrounding, where one can enjoy a swimming pool like no other, 120 meters in length, was sculpted in front of the complex, with a view of the bay and the extensive blue of the Pacific. A masterpiece of the Mexican Architect Javier Sordo Madaleno, (who is one of the most renowned architects worldwide and is specialized in designing tourist projects), who made this dream a reality, and on April 2, 1993 one of the most beautiful beach hotels in Mexico opened its doors.Camino Real Zaashila Huatulco is located in the beautiful Tangolunda Bay, one out of the nine bays of Huatulco in the state of Oaxaca. A hotel embracing the shoreline and boasting an exclusive beach, 25 minutes away from the airport. RESTAURANTS - BEL LA GRILL (Grilled fish): The perfect place to enjoy the breakfast (buffet) with a beautiful bay view. Open from 7:00 - 11:00 H. - BEACH CLUB: Exquisite fresh seafood and snacks. Camino Real Zaashila enjoys acclaim for its stunning grounds, pristine beach, and the warmth of its staff, with its location near beautiful bays being a favorite among many guests. While the hotel's amenities and beachside setting are highly praised, some visitors have expressed concerns about the need for room updates and better maintenance. While the majority appreciate the service, there are occasional mentions of room service shortcomings and unexpected fees. Travelers also caution that the hotel's additional charges and dining costs may detract from its overall value.

Detailed Reviews
Liz W wrote a review Feb 2020
We stayed for two weeks with the all inclusive package. The resort is beautiful, the rooms are simple and the bed was very comfortable. We liked that the only buffet was breakfast. The lunch restaurant was amazing, never had a bad meal there. Suppers were a bit confusing at first. Sometimes there was a chalkboard saying what the meal would be, sometimes there wasn’t. The lunch restaurant got converted to a dinner restaurant where you needed reservations on most nights. The thing we liked best is there is no entertainment team yelling in the loudspeaker at the pool all day. It is very quiet and peaceful. If you like to party this would not be the place for you. There is no evening entertainment which was fine with us. The beach is amazing and the pools are great. There seemed to be lots of chairs available except on the weekends it gets a bit busier. We liked that we got beer in bottles or cans and drinks served in glasses, not as much plastic waste. One thing we never had to do at an all inclusive before was sign our bill every time we got something. We didn’t have to pay but I think that’s because most people at this resort are not all inclusive and they don’t give bracelets which we liked. The only criticism we would have is that the service seemed at times inconsistent. For example we had to keep asking to have our bottled water replenished in the room. There didn’t seem to be a system for checking and restocking that which I wouldn’t blame on the maid, she didn’t have the water bottles with her. Seems like an easy problem to solve. Service in the restaurants was mostly good. The staff worked extremely hard and tried their best. We didn’t get service in our lawn chairs but we could get up and get stuff from the bar ourselves. There are a lot of stairs and ramps, would not be good for people that have mobility problems. It is not adults only but there were very few kids here except on weekends. I wouldn’t bring little kids here myself. Railings are not kid friendly and if you want a kids program I don’t think there is one. However the pool and the beach would be great for kids. Would come here again and would recommend it to others.

+1
Having been to Huatulco before, staying at a huge complex, we booked this looking for a smaller place. We were very pleasantly surprised. About the only negative thing I can say about the hotel is that there are plenty of stairs. 112 stairs plus a ramp to get to our room (#107 in building 9). If you forgot something in your room, you really thought twice before going to get it. Other buildings were much more easily accessed but none would be considered acceptable for those with mobility issues.
The rooms were very clean and spacious with balconies all facing the ocean, Some of the lower floor rooms had plunge pools attached. They were a little dated but nothing that affected our stay in any way.
The pool and beach area were great. Plenty of chairs, lounges and umbrellas. The palapas were large and had edges much lower than I'd seen before. This provided great shade if you wanted it. The beach itself had good sand. As is common at west coast resorts, there is a 2 foot ledge where the waves break. It can be a surprise when wading out and can make exiting a less than graceful experience.
Food was excellent. There is a decent buffet for breakfast and the menu service for lunch and dinner. Dinner often had a special night with BBQ or a wood fired pizza oven used. I didn't find anything bad on those menus. All items were excellent, especially the bacon wrapped shrimp at dinner.
Service was some of the best I've experienced. Hats off to Carlos at the bar and Reynaldo in food service. At lunch time Reynaldo would bring a table to our palapa along with 4 chairs and serve our lunch right on the beach. They were consistently ahead of us and anticipated our requests.
There are no wrist bands here. Half of the resort has been converted into condo units. (NO, no time share pitches). When you order a drink or a meal you give your room number and at some point sign the bill. If you're all inclusive there are no charges when you leave. Checkout took 2 minutes at most.
In summary I enjoyed the smaller facilities and the excellent service. I will definitely go back.

Just returned from a one week stay at Camino. Great weather, great service, relaxing and enjoyable. We expected nothing less having stayed at Camino previously two years ago and we were not disappointed the second time around. One thing did change however, there is no dinner buffet available now. You have two choices for dinner, the a la carte restaurant (one of two that alternate every night) or order room service (at no extra cost). Most of the dishes at the a la carte restaurants are Mexican (Oaxacan) based, so your choices may be limited if this is not your thing. Personally, I found the menu choices nutritious but the sauces are a bit bland. That would be my recommendation to the resort, find a sauce chef to upgrade the dishes.

The grounds on the resort are spectacular, do yourself a favour and take the time to walk around the resort...up on the hill, and the east side and enjoy the beautiful flowering shrubs, birds, iguanas. etc. We saw Chacalacas, parakeets, orioles etc. Don't just hang around the pool and beach, cause you will miss out on the true beauty of the resort.

Of course I can't forget to mention the beautiful beach and pool. The quality beach towels are plentiful as are the availability of palapalas. For lunch you can order at the beach at your palapala or take a seat in the beach side restaurant. The shrimp tacos are our favourite dish...very tasty,

You cant beat the location , the seaweed free beaches , the reliable weather (sunny and between 30- 32 C) the scenery ...etc. when you book a Huatulco vacation. and Camino Real is a choice that wont disappoint.

Great staff, breakfast and lunch are top notch but what has happened to the evening meals? Barbecue every night instead of a buffet is a major cut back that we did not sign up for. The upper level lounge bar is closed to further aggravate the evening malaise. Bar stools at the poolside bar as the only option to enjoy an evening cocktail do not meet the standards one expects of Camino Real.
On the plus side, having wifi in the rooms is great but please move the router away from the bed headboard as it is not conducive to a good nights sleep. Research indicates that routers should be a minimum 6 feet away from a bed.
We did enjoy the pool, the beach, the quietness and all the wonderful people we met.
This was our second time at the Camino Real and we were disappointed this time around. Not sure if we will be back.

The hotel is quite and relax, the best is the staff at the pool/beach bar. Nice place for the tourist who wants a quite and relax place with no kids. Room in need of renovation and some care. What is unforgivable is that we were a group of 40 people and 3 of us have items disappeared from the room. I made the claim for Dior sunglasess with value 300 dollars, room 26, from room 57, a hat and from another room a pair of airpods. it's pity that the location invites you to relax, but if one has to be aware that you are not robbed, then it makes no sense to go on vacation to such a place.

Maribel De la Fuente wrote a review Nov 2020
First of all staff was super friendly and the look of the place is quite pleasant.

I've got to say now that our room was disappointing from the very beginning. The layout is very dated. We found one broken mirror inside the main closet that has not been changed. The phone was old and with a broken cord. The curtains had holes all over the place and the inner pool had not been cleaned before giving us the room.

The main pool of the hotel its great but tons of little mosaic tiles were missing or loose. Both me and my baby boy got injuries becuase of that same reason.

The main manu could have changes to make it more appealing to regular users. Flavor was good but also would have been good to offer children's menu which the place lacks.

Finally two key notes for this time: 1st the beach was dirty with single use plastic (we even encountered a syringe which should not have been there at all). Attention needs to be put to make a more pleasant stay for guests. 2nd and most importantly, on Sunday there was no service of sanitation of sunbeds nor cleaning of the pool. There is NO EXCUSE as to not have enough personnel to go through thorough cleaning at all times as we are all trying to have some normality in pandemic times. Hope things improve in the near future.

We went for one week to just relax and do nothing and this is the perfect place! Our room was right above the beach so we went to sleep with the sound of the waves, and when I woke in the night the view of the stars from our balcony was stunning. It’s not a fancy hotel but is spotlessly clean with friendly staff. We appreciated how quiet it is with no loud music or nightly entertainment which is why we booked it. The private beach is lovely, the weather was perfect every day and the pool is gorgeous. We enjoyed walking up the hill behind the resort where we saw many wonderful birds. We will go back.

Michael wrote a review May 2022
This was our first visit here, we chose it for visual appeal and it is listed as a quiet relaxing place. However, this was not the case, the day we arrived there happened to be a private wedding taking place.

The front staff should have told us this was happening, we could have been prepared or decided to go somewhere else. We rented a room with a private plunge pool, and we were looking forward to relaxing here in the evening, but this was not possible. The music from the private wedding was incredibly loud, at 10pm I called to complain, they said it would be turned off at 11, well, the music continued until 1am, we did not get to enjoy our evening, and we did not get a goods night sleep either. after complaining again, there was nothing offered by the hotel except an apology from the front desk.

If there is going to be a private event, you need to tell your other guests. 10pm is supposed to be quiet time, everyone else has to abide by this, then so should the private wedding, if they want to pay for everyone's room, then fine, play your music all night, but I am paying over $200US a night, turn your f music off.

As for the hotel itself, from the outside it looks beautiful, a really nice pool, very clean, very friendly staff, the grounds are exceptional and Its at the end of the bay, so it is very private.

But, the room is just that, a hotel room, nothing really special, the beach is nice, but very steep and you cant swim or walk very far, breakfast is horribly expensive, your only choice is the buffet. All we wanted is a coffee and some fruit, we asked if we could get a discount for this, nope, 325 peso no matter how much or little you take, this is just poor service, not everyone wants to have breakfast buffet, there should be another option. Dinner was good, but yes, expensive. And they don't seem to understand to bring appetizers before your main course, it felt like a long time to get our food, and then it all came at once.

I gave the service an average rating, this basically for the front staff not telling us there was a private party happening and you wont enjoy your night, and for the dinner staff. All the other staff we encountered were wonderful.

The resort looks great, very nice pool, you cant swim in the ocean, its very expensive all around. Wont be coming back.

The location, beach and pool could not be better. Not a typical all-inclusive. It's small, with different types of rooms spread out over the hillside, many with individual plunge pools. Menu meals concentrating on Mexican food rather than buffets (except at breakfast) and no evening entertainment. Beautiful grounds and friendly staff.

Every year with our friends we make a fun trip. This year we decided to go to Huatulco and choose the Camino Real Zaashila. This hotel is very nice, the rooms are spacious clean and white. The hotel is very beautiful the beach is great the views are amazing. The reason I did not give this hotel 5 stars is the food. The hotels food is super terrible they serve every evening the same thing it doesn’t vary. It has pozole, tlayudas, beans and rice every day. They tell you they have a salad bar but it’s lettuce and vinegar 😏 Every night horrible food it’s not even a little good it is very bad quality. It is expensive for Mexico, last night we paid 800 pesos for crappy food and a lemonade😩
The breakfast buffet is just as awful for the same price . They don’t even have good coffee. I feel a little bad because the employees a really nice they need help in the restaurant department!!!!! Camino Real should invest in this department !!!! The food is really really bad .
They could also open a small coffee shop that would help them a lot!!! Hope this was helpfull
