I found the location excellent with my day starting early with walks along the malecon.I walked a few mornings to the National to have a cigar and coffeewhich took about 20 minutes.I felt safe walking due to the police presence.as it gets over whelming "Hey you my freind Where are you From" .I found the location is within a 2 dollar 3 dollar cab ride distance to most locations.Try to get a room away from street level,I was on the second floor the first night as the hotel was full but after asking, was told to come back at noon the next day and was givin a room on the 5th floor over looking the malecon.......take earplugs just the same as it is noisy with the old trucks rambling by at 5 am and the people gathering at night and early morning as it nevers sleeps in Havana. If you want quiet then go to Varadero as the Deauville is the real Cuba.Breakfast is filling but nothing to write home about, stick to the hard-boiled eggs, toast, coffee and fruits.Pool was great addition, would spend my day at Partagas and RYJ cigar factories and then cool and chill by the pool late afternoon.Staff is friendly and competent,in fact I had accidently left my safety deposit box open with my passport and $300 in it and it was there with my room cleaned with out incident, with the keys dangling there on my return.to see this made me feel safe.Rooms are clean, water was hot, staff was friendly but hey this is a good clean cheap 2 star......coffee is great in the lobby as well as the cuban sanwiches........forget dinner, get to the Paladares.....Chicas are not a problem there outside but for the most part if you show you are not interested they leave you alone.A lot of Americans were here which surprised meas well as European's as well as some Japanese..If you want to see Havana and the real Cuba come here,if your Varadeo type who comes here to fly and flop on the beach,I'm sorry to have wasted your time reading my review...........Will I go back?......SI,in a heartbeat.......

I almost didnt book this hotel bc of the bad reviews. I almost cancelled days before my trip. I was here Feb 10-14th 2018. My worries were unfounded. Leave your 3* NA standards at home and remember eveything in Havana is OLD. Unless your paying 300-400 a night you wont get freshly painted, decorated hotel rooms. Hotel Deauville is right on the Malecon with AMAZING views, we were on the 12th floor and could say Havana Bay, the Strip and downtown. The pool was lovely. The breakfast was very good and the cafe lattes. The room was basic and had YES had old stuff in it but who cares. The first thing i checked was the sheets and for bugs. I didnt see any. Except 2 little bugs in the shower. Just like at home in the summer you would see in Canada if your window was left open. We always got new towels nice and clean from the Main and clean white bed linen. Sat night was the loudest outside the hotel as most youth and tourist hangoutside on the malecon blvd and around the hotel. But if you wear ear plugs it isnt too bad. The AC worked great in our room 1209. The beach was 20 min Cab ride away 20CUC return. The beach was beautiful and I know, I have been to Varadero, Cayo Coco and Santa Maria; the name of the beach is Santa Maria OR playa de ests they are all together so it just depends which one you get dropped off at. There are umbrellas and chairs to rent there and you can order food/drinks from the beach. Make sure you get a cab that says Taxi on it bc if not you might end up in an unsafe cuban car. We walked everyday to downtown about 15 min walk. A cab ride was 8CUC. So we would cab back. Trust me if you dont need a fancy, modern hotel this is a good place to stay. We also ate at the restaurant at night and it was delcious. The bar inside the hotel served good drinks too. email blackpawlady@gmail.com for more questions. I cant say enough about my first experience in Old Havana off a resort and at this hotel. Oh, seemed every age stays here we song young people, 40somethings and 60 somethings. Not any little kids though here at this hotel. You have to rent the safe :( Dont need converter for electronics.

This area is not for the faint of heart. This is Cuba. Leave your 3* North American definitions at home. If you want a sanitized version
of Havana then go stay in one of the fancier hotels in the Parc Central area. But if you want to see how the Cubans really live and experience the culture this is the place.
We stayed for 5 nights. The hotel is nothing fancy but does the job. We were on the 8th floor with no balcony. The room is a good size and had 3 double beds. The beds were fairly comfortable, maybe just a little soft. The shower had fantastic water pressure and always had hot water. We normally got fresh towels but I doubt our floor was sweeped nor our sink cleaned the whole time we were there. Our cleaning lady Nadia, was lovely. I brought hair ties, kids shampoos, toothbrushes and dental floss and left her something different every day. She was very thankful and chatted us up whenever she saw us.
Tip everyone here....these people have next to nothing. A little goes a long way.
You have to rent the safety deposit box key for 2 cuc/day. Big key with the room number largely displayed so don't lose it. We hid it in our clothes somewher in the room..
You can't change money at the front desk and good luck getting a WiFi card. The government distributes the cards to the various hotels and once they are gone that is it. You can buy a WiFi card at various locations through out the city but you will be lining up to buy it. There are guys on the street who will offer them to you...along with cigars and pretty much anything else. Not sure if buying off the street would be such a great idea.
The bank closes at 3pm so first priority is to get some cucs. There is a bank about 8 blocks up Italia street on the opposite side of the hotel. You have to go in and tell the person at the desk to your immediate right that you want to exchange money. They will give you a number and you sit and wait for your number to be called. Only 1 person is allowed to go up to the cash at a time.
Next stop is the Mercado on the way back to the hotel (same side of street as the hotel) for bottled water.
Breakfast was included with our Sunwing package. Nothing fantastic here but will meet your needs. Live music every morning which was a nice touch. We stuck to the omeĺettes and pastries. There is limited fruit available and it is not restocked so if you go later to breakfast it is slim pickings...papaya, pineapple and ocassionally grapefruit.
there is a pool on the 6th floor. Again nothing fancy. We never went in but did have a drink around the pool almost every evening around 5pm. Pool area closes at 6pm. Guy was tapping his foot (so to speak) at 5:55 : )

There is always people out in this area. We walked EVERYWHERE and always felt safe. It is only about a 5 min walk to Parc Central and 700 meters from Habana Vieja. The hotel is right across from the Melacon where all the locals hang out at night. Grab a beer and go sit amongst them! No one ever bothered us except for the constant request for taxis. We must have said Non Gracias 50 times a Day!
This area can be sensory overload. It is noisy, busy, smelly....horns honking, people yelling, music playing. The Cuban people are passionate, resourceful and friendly.
We were looking to experience the real Cuba (after several all inclusive trips) and this was it.
Food tip: excellent restaurant only a few hundred meters from hotel on Italia called Castas Y Tal (C & T)

This hotel was booked by a friend through Hotels.com and the issues are as listed:
We both paid the same amount $210.53 his was a 3 bedroom since his son stayed with him mine was a single bed for me and my wife
On informing the manager about the room he said this was a two bed room you will see photos attached that show a two bedroom and my room.
Hotels.com is the worst site and I would need them to know this because I lost money by sleeping in a dirty room with staff and management including the senior lady Manager at this hotel. The showers stand was broken toilets dirty and stinky as hell.

I didnt stay in the hotel but I enjoyed the drinks and food. I can't speak for the quality of the rooms but I suspect given the old reviews that it is Under New Management. The prices are rock bottom and we were able to have four cocktails a glass of wine and two full meals for $9. It was honestly the first time in a long time that I did not feel like people were scanning me or trying to take advantage of me as a tourist and I was not subjected to Boom Boom music which is now everywhere in Havana and outskirts. Sadly Havana has become a place of scams for tourists and we are nothing more than walking dollar signs most of the time. This place was filled with kind and grateful staff and a beautiful view of the malecon. Great morning capuccino too. I accidentally paid too much and they gave me money back. This was the first and probably the only time that will happen in Cuba I'm sorry to say. Con artist and deceptive sales people abound in other locations and as a tourist one needs to be always aware.

Do yourself the favor don’t stay here, the price and pictures may tell you it’s a good choice but don’t do it. I stayed there this past January and let me tell you the building is not fully functional. One elevator was broke, water pressure was not great. Plus when I was checking out they accused use of taking 2 towels, really those ugly towel why!! I was running late and paid 7.20 for them. They wanted me to go upstairs to verify the towel was there, I don’t got time to waste going upstairs, and they accused my whole family about it, trash and disrespectful!! Never again

I have stayed at the Hotel Deauville many times over the past 25 years. The hotel is uniquely located on the Malacon, facing the Florida Straits. Many rooms have a balcony. The hotel has a large swimming pool on the 6th floor with a wiew of the sea end the city. The staff have always been incredibly freindly.
I can recommend the hotel, also for longer stays

Me was in this hotel for a week and it was GOOD! I really don't understand all the negative stories here. I also arrived there late on a prepaid reservation and the room was just there! And what a room it was: I booked a room with one bed, but there were three beds in the room and it was so big, it looked like a dancehall! And did I dance? Oh yes, there was MTV español on the televison all day! Hooray, hooray!!

I did not see any cockroaches at all, the room was very neat and cleaned every day. The maids made the most wonderful things out of the fresh and new towels: swans, flowers and even sailing boats. There were two mirrors in the room and one in the bathroom. Three mirrors in one hotel room, where on earth do you find that, eh?! In the closet I could hang my dresses and there was a safety box there and even a light. A light in a closet in Havana?! Huh, can you believe that? But it is true, saw it with my own eyes. The key was a white plastic card that you had to slide into some device and then the door opened while at the same time a green light lit up. Just like a bloody traffic light!! Holy Cow!!

At night you could hear the waves bouncing against the Malecon and the beam of the lighthouse of the Morro Castle went through the room every ten seconds or so. Not that it lighted up the whole place, but just in a right way so that it did not wake you up, but gave you a good feeling when you could not sleep. This Deauville Hotel thought of everything!

The people at the hotel were so friendly. They opened the door for me every time I walked in or out. I felt like a real queen there! And the people at the lobby bar were so nice and friendly. They were very generous with the ron (ron puro, hey hey hey!!). They served it in a whineglass, and they really filled it up! Boy, did I drink there, hey hey hey! Must be those Malecon waves. There was a fantastic band every night in the same lobby bar. Boy, did I dance there, hey hey hey!

My only negative experience was the lack of coffee during two days. But hey: that's Cuba isn't it? They had coffee though in the Hotel Lincoln, only a few blocks away (not miles, gna gna gna)

Then the safety thing: Avenida de Italia (Galiano) was packed with policemen. On every corner there were two or three of them. Never felt unsafe there.

So I say hooray to the Hotel Deauville!! Hey hey hey!!

Kisses from Amsterdam

We stayed in the Deauville Hotel in Havana for three nights, and then went back for another couple of nights after three weeks touring western Cuba. Arriving in the hotel was a shock and a pleasure - in a rundown area which is dimly lit at night, the hotel looked uninviting. But jet-lagged after the long flight from England, we spent much of the night gazing out of our 13th floor room at the wonderful Havana skyline, including the forts and the Capitolio. The second stay was on the fifth floor, which gave less splendid views but a great glimpse of local life, as Cuban children played on the wonderful Malecon and splashed in the waves. Courting couples strolled along or ducked the huge waves, depending on the weather - and although the run-down area made us feel at first as though the plane had taken a wrong turn to Baghdad, we started enjoying the glimpses down onto people's rooftops where they kept their dogs, played, hung out their washing and simply relaxed in the sunset. Breakfast pretty basic, staff sullen, but the sixth floor pool was good and - as our second visit showed - we'd definitely return. And a triple room was huge - for four of us, we booked two rooms the first time, then rattled round in a generously sized triple the next. Enjoy!

There are safes in the room but to get a key to use you pay a deposit and a daily rent.

Its small, there seemed to be more tables than sunbeds. I didn't use the pool. It's on the roof with an ok view and a small restaurant/cafe on the same level.

Hi - yes, this could be true - we arrived at 6am in the morning and could not check in until 4pm. We could not eat breakfast there that morning even though we were checking out and not having breakfast on the last day. This is not a customer friendly location.
