Hotel's Favourite
We spent a week at each and I have reviewed both hotels separately but this is the review title I searched for prior to booking. Both are amazing hotels, virtually next door to each other and in many ways very similar.
Rooms - Based on our Bluff Suite vs two Junior Suites, Curtain Bluff is well ahead, driven by the standard of finish and furnishings.
Food is comparable. If pushed i would give it to Curtain Bluff on quality and Carlisle Bay on variety although it’s very close and I would probably say Carlisle Bay’s Jetty Grill is the best of all the options.
Service - again close with Bluff the most professional but Bay being more universally friendly.
Facilities - this one goes to the well maintained tennis courts and gym of Curtain Bluff. Overall the extent and standard of facilities is better at Bluff. Waterskiing and trips out to snorkel the reef are included along with all the other non-motorised water sports that are common to both resorts.
The beach is slightly better at Carlisle Bay and its Jetty Beach Bar is a small but beautiful spot.
Clientele - Carlisle Bay is more British and Curtain Bluff more American. The average age of children is higher at Curtain Bluff with teens and university age dominating vs a more even spread at Carlisle Bay.
So, which would I choose to go back to? Whilst I’d be happy to stay at either, I’m going to say my preference by a fairly narrow margin was Curtain Bluff, but it is more expensive…

I had been twice to Curtain Bluff in short business trips in the past (although it is certainly not a business hotel) and I was so positively impressed that I decided to take my wife and daughter to a holiday there.
It was a very wise decision. Since then, we have become regular visitors.
We have just returned from our first vist there in the COVID era and I can confirm they are better than ever and you couldn't feel any safer.
I have been to many resorts and islands in the Caribbean and I don't think there is anything like Curtain Bluff, the perfect combination between a boutique hotel and an all-inclusive resort.
Location is superb, not far from the airport, in a quiet part of Antigua, flanked by two beaches, one rough, ideal for surfers, and a very calm bay, perfect for families and water sports. The resort has very extensive grounds for a relative small number of guests so you will never have to reserve loungers or wait for tables, tennis courts, etc.
Food is outstanding, all a la carte, except the exceptional lunch buffet (where you also have a la carte options). The menus include many options and the food is always presented very nicely, warm and promptly. A 5-star cuisine in the Caribbean!!!
I could go on and on about the positives of CB but let me concentrate on the two highlights: the people and the value for money.
The team is large and of incredible nice disposition and superb training. It is headed by the omnipresent owner/founder, Chelle, the General Manager, Rob and the Resident Manager, Wendy. They lead by example, greeting everybody, making everybody feel part of a family. Logically, everybody else follows the lead. You don't need to wait for a waiter, a beach assistant, a bar tender, they will always be there with a smile and a nice disposition.
And then, it comes the issue of the cost. Yes indeed, it is a boutique five star resort and is priced accordingly and competitively. But, when you carefully run the numbers and realise you don't have to pay extra for speciality restaurants, premium dishes, motorised water sports, premium drinks, sea view rooms (all rooms have sea views), room service, not even tips (the inelegant, uncomfortable and embarrassing practice of all day long tipping does not apply there), you come to the conclusion it is actually good value for money.
If you have reached this point of your reading and haven't booked Curtain Bluff yet, do hurry up, you don't need to do any further research, you have already found the best resort in the Caribbean

Our extended family spent 6 nights at Curtain Bluff over the holidays and it was a dreamy experience all around. There was something for everyone, young kids, teenagers and adults...everyone had a blast. The resort is gorgeous and the staff were all so friendly and accommodating! There is really alot of attention to detail and very elegant touches, such as the management's hand-written welcome greeting. The rooms are super nice with special attention to detail and extra perks, such as a bottle of local rum and ice replenished every day along with many other treats.

The all-inclusive concept makes for a super relaxing time, no need to wait and sign a bill, back to the beach you go! The food in the restaurants and the bar all wonderful, with excellent service all around, our waiter Jeffrey was always friendly giving insights into the local dishes and making sure we always had enough banana bread in the morning, Glouster so knowledgeable about wines worldwide, Auslando made us terrific cocktails like the Jungle Bird, Jason and Carlos always ensured we had a nice seat and fulfilled our wishes. On the beach Kavier swung by often with popsicles and rum punsch and water to keep us hydrated. We had fallen in love with the local fruit the sugar apple, not always so easy to find, and after coming back from the local fruit stand empty handed one day, Akimba from the front gate brought me some himself a few days later which was very kind.

It was an added bonus that all the water sports were included, as our 9 year old twins could not get enough of the tubing experience, thank you Junior, EZ, Reggie and Jennerd for taking them out so often and for the super snorkel trip we had, The kids also enjoyed the kids camp where Eileen had fun activities prepared and was flexible and fun even to the last minute, helping the boys make T-shirts on the morning of our departure. In the spa, friendly Babs does a nice manicure and Wayan and Shelly are terrific at massage. I also had fun in the aqua fitness with friendly Samantha keeping us moving back and forth in the pool.

In sum, everyone at Curtain Bluffs contributed so nicely to make it a very special stay with nothing to be desired. Thank you and hope to see you again soon!

Thank you for taking the time to write such a glowing in depth review of your recent CB holiday. One of the many wonderful things about CB is that it appeals to all ages from children to grandparents are all in between. Every guests finds their niche and favorite activity on property. Whether that be reading under a shady cabana with a hand delivered Pina Colada , to water skiing, to snorkeling trips out to Cades reef to enjoying a gourmet meal in either of our two restaurants, to a relaxing spa treatment, to dancing under the stars to a different nightly band. CB has it all and so much more. Looking forward to seeing you back at the resort for a return visit.

Many nice things about our stay at Curtain Bluff. But the part that nagged us was the loudness of the staff. One morning we were awakened by the yelling of “Room Service” for the neighbor’s breakfast. We didn’t want to wake up then. It was like it was done on purpose. Surly staff amongst the elder men. I guess they forget that the guests are actually allowing them to make a living. Many return guests, but I can’t imagine going to the same resort for decades. The loud music that lasted every night from the Tamarind Restaurant, and wouldn’t stop until 10:30 pm. T The waiter noisily emptied out the ice from the salad bar behind our heads as we were eating lunch. At tea time, the 2 male waiters would talk very loudly to each other in their dialect, again, we wanted to relax and read, and not hear anything else. Limited choices for vegetarians, especially at tea time. It was very pricey to stay there, and we felt we were subsidizing all the drinkers, as we don’t drink alcohol, only water. We loved the younger waiters, especially Javid. Dinner was mostly just vegetables, it would be good to add some tofu or brown rice, instead of that unappetizing wild rice. Maybe a puff pastry filled with vegetables? The worst offense was on our last evening there, we were the first to arrive. The host sat us at the front corner table, right by the sand. The entire table was filled with sand flies,I guess since we weren’t regulars, maybe the host thought we wouldn’t notice.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on your recent holiday. We want to apologize for the noise you experienced through out your vacation. We will do our utmost to address the various issues you mentioned re staff interrupting your solitude and quiet time. We are extremely sorry about the inconvenience you endured on your last evening at Sea Grape Restaurant. Due to the damp weather, this tends to attract the flying ants to the lights on the dinner tables and in the restaurant. We hope that you will consider to return to CB to experience the quiet environment that we usually provide, which we fell short on this occasion.

Curtain Bluff is simply beautiful. All of the rooms face the surf beach so you sleep to the sound of the ocean. The junior suites are large with plenty of closet space. The beds and pillows are very comfortable, making for a great night's sleep. The grounds are extremely well kept, and they offer a horticultural tour once a week which is very informative. The food is very good, and the adult beverages are top shelf. The employees are wonderful - friendly and efficient. Just about everything you could want to do is included and when they say no tipping, they mean it so you don't feel the pressure to dig into your pocket continually and there's no need to carry cash on the resort. We hope to visit again in the near future.

My husband and I had a lovely 8 days at Curtain Bluff . I had previously stayed on my own last February for 6 days solo R & R and knew that my husband would love the property and it’s laid back but classy atmosphere !
We stayed in the Grace Bay Suite with a small plunge pool and outside lounge ! The suite was a great size with everything you could want . An exceptional view from the roomy balcony , comfy sun beds and chairs . The view was stunning overlooking the Atlantic or bluff side . You had the sun from sunrise till around 4 o’clock . We always went back mid afternoon when the carribean beach became too hot for us .
I understand the suite is due for some updating so will be even more comfortable and luxurious once it’s done !
All the facilities are top notch from the superb tennis courts , yoga area and the gym . My husband used the gym as he was training for the London marathon ( now moved !! ) and said it was small but well maintained . We didn’t use the Spa this time but I used it last year and would rate it very highly having been in Spas all over the world .
The grounds and the 2 beaches are amazing both in different ways . The bluff side being much wilder and rougher but still beautiful and then the more sheltered main beach . A beautiful bay with great swimming , stoney to get in in places it has gentle seas and the most comprehensive non motorised and motorised ( no jet skis thankfully) water sports that I’ve seen anywhere manned by a friendly team . There are numerous sun beds for every type of sunbather, sun , shade and plenty of fixed umbrellas . There is a pool that looked very nice but doesn’t have a direct beach view . We’re early risers possibly because of the time difference the beach was at its best first thing , just an amazing place to watch the horizon and chill .
We keep ourselves to ourselves as we’re so busy at home and value our time together . People were mostly couples of the older demographic at the time we were there but as we were leaving families were arriving for Spring break which wouldn’t be our time to travel .
Without doubt with the exception of the Maldives which we visit a couple of times a year the staff and service were very , very good . We hardly came across anyone that had an attitude , they were always so friendly . The resort looks after there staff very well and I think that shows in the service you receive ! Food and drinks were good , a little “ old school “ for us but well presented and cooked . They also have an extensive wind list at an extra cost and George was always on hand to find us a nice bottle of something .
I wanted to thank Wendy for all she did for us along with our travel agent Ana at Scott Dunn Private for arranging a special event for us . It was a beautiful afternoon/evening and was perfect no detail missed ! We shall always remember it .
We left on the 7th of March just before Covid 19 was taking a hold and I wish all the staff the very best at this time !
We will hopefully return for another beautiful holiday sometime in the future !!

I can't say enough good things about this resort! This was our second trip back in as many years, and we plan to keep on coming back for the foreseeable future! My husband and I as well as my brother and sister in law enjoy the opportunity of the many water sports options (kayaking, paddle boarding, tubing, sailing, skiing & snorkeling) as well as the quiet beach with personal umbrellas and drink service. This year the 4 of us were able to participate in a Scuba Discovery course and go out on our first ever dives. Jensen and Junior were so helpful and patient with us and calmed any nerves we had. We loved it so much, we plan to get certified and come back ready for deeper dives next year!
When we aren't at one of the 2 beaches, we love going for a dip in the pool or enjoying some quiet time in our room. While there is wi-fi available, we didn't find ourselves missing TV or internet. Without too much technology, we found ourselves socializing with our family and the other guests more than we probably would have.
The resort has 2 dining options which allowed us to try dishes we might not have tried back home in Georgia. For the most part the food is superb. We had some confusion about an order, but the waitstaff was ready to remedy the order and bring us the correct order promptly. The waiters themselves, especially Akeem, Brad & Javid, are very friendly and will remember your names & preferences for the duration of your stay.
The only 2 small things I would suggest for visitors/Curtain Bluff would be for the gift shop to offer more locally made things. I was able to buy a couple things from some local ladies on site, but I was able to find a wider selection of Antiguan items are the airport. The other issue was the comfort level of one of our mattresses. However, as soon as the question of comfort was raised, the mattress was replaced with a brand new one immediately, so don't be afraid to ask the Curtain Bluff staff for help! At the end of our vacation, it really did feel like we were saying goodbye to a second family, and we cannot wait to come back next year!

We visited Curtain Bluff as it had great reviews on Trip Advisor. What a gem!
This is an amazingly flexible resort ideal for families, sporty types or a quiet fly n' flop.
The personal service was exceptional as was the attention to detail in everything from the rooms to the beach loungers.
Can't recommend it highly enough. It felt like visiting old friends even though it was our first visit. Little wonder the returnees rate is very high.
We definitely hope to visit again soon.

This was THE best resort i have ever stayed it! i loved every single second of it- the staff were extremely friendly and down to earth making them easy to chat to. The bedrooms were amazing and the view was one of a kind! The rooms were cleaned and tidied and it was relaxing to come back to after a night out to a ready made bed. The resort had so much to offer for example all the water sports were outstanding and the things i thought i would never do i ended up being able to do (for me it was paddle boarding). The snorkelling trip opportunity was just amazing and the having the chance to see turtles and stingrays etc was one of a kind! The food was absolutely exceptional, everything was cooked to perfection and it had a perfect range of different foods to offer! The beach service, the people who would make up our sunbeds and put towels on them and make sure we were okay was something that made a difference with how relaxing the holiday was! Everyone was so friendly and it was a lovely environment it was easy to book day trips via the hotel getting the help you need making it stress free! 10/10 will definitely be coming back

Hi, there are relatively near each other, and the nightlife offer is ssomewhat similar in both, but I found Carlisle Bay a bit busier, I think it is slightly bigger as well. They are both really nice hotels, curtain bluff is perhaps more relaxing and laid back; on the other hand the food in Carlisle bay is outstanding. Both hotels have plenty of activities on offer, Curtain bluff is more informal in terms of the use and/or booking of their facilities. Both are very child friendly. It depends on what you’re looking for!
