Way better than I was expecting. I had a few hours to kill before my flight so I took a 10 minute walk from my downtown hotel to the museum. $18 entrance fee. I don’t know if they offer tours but I did it solo. My first suggestion is to take the elevator to the top then walk down otherwise it is a continual walk up ramp after ramp. To see everything would take hours and hours but I saw a lot in a couple hours. Some great movies and exhibits to learn from.

Gorgeous gardens and interesting sculptures. We brought our dogs as the garden allows them on the grounds. Very peaceful garden and easy to access from nearby parking lots

Great museum -- well researched and beautiful exhibits. It is a combination of the geological and ecological history of Manitoba but also of the people who live there. Really nicely laid out -- great for kids

Great park, saw a mixture of wildlife including deer, rabbits, squirrels, and even a fox! It was a snowy day so everything was white, but still beautiful.

The Forks is a fairly typical urban market or foodhall of the kind you see at redevelopment areas in other cities.

The selection of food vendors is pretty decent, although the options for a drink are a little limited. I would have liked a few more craft eateries and less fast-food. There's a craft beer and wine bar at the center of the food court. Prices are reasonable.

All things considered, this is a great place to spend a Saturday in Winnipeg's downtown.

This is by far one of the best zoos I've been to! Most of the animals were active or at least visible. Enclosures are large and well maintained. Food was delicious and eating next to the polar bears was unbelievable! The dining space and bathrooms were very clean and the staff were exceptional. We also like the layout & lush vegetation, if felt like we were on an adventure through the park.

My favourite go-to place in Winnipeg. I used to come here all the time when I lived in Manitoba. While I was back in town, I knew I had to come here. I'm happy to report that the place is still just as charming and beautiful as I remember it. There's something to do for everyone here, from the riverwalk to the antique shops to a children's museum to a hotel to a travel info centre to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. I could go on and on about more specifics about what you can find here, but I won't do that. I LOVE how everything you find here is locally made and not commercialized.

There's also excellent food options here, the majority of them all local! This is great to see, especially if you want to get a taste of Winnipeg. Classics like Fergie's Fish and Chips and The Original Pancake House can be found here, as well as some delicious pizza and food from all over the world. There's also a small observatory you can go up to get a good view of The Forks, and during winter time, from what I remember, there's an ice skating rink too.

Parking can be a bit tricky sometimes but there should be plenty, regardless of when you visit. If you're debating whether or not to visit... DO VISIT. It's 100% worth the trip. I'll certainly be back here the next time I'm in the Winnipeg area.

Went there with my family. It was initially boring but soon we were engaged. Clicked pictures within the premises.
    The historic airplanes are gorgeous.

For an aviation enthusiast, this is probably heaven.
For me, it was a great spot to spend quality time with family.

    Overall - strongly recommended place

My expectations were pretty low, but I really liked Riding Mountain...it's like a baby Banff! Just three hours from Winnipeg and it's so nice!
    Lots of parking and signs.

I want to start off by saying that I had a blast when I was volunteering at the research center (I went during the bear season, from Nov. 1st to Nov. 16th, 2023); I met a lot of passionate guests, staff and volunteers; not only saw tons of Polar bears, other wildlife and Northern Lights, but also learned a lot about Polar bears, the town, its indigenous culture and behind-the-scene operations of the research center. Volunteer expeditions are more affordable than Learning Vacations in exchange of services we contribute to the research center.

The center’s LEED green building (acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is maintained high quality with few staff on site and really their core asset, with a dome and an outdoor deck to view the Northern Lights, a fully operational kitchen, communal accommodations, a lab, a library along with meeting and recreational rooms. They mainly provide services for researchers but also facilitate evening lectures, Tundra Buggy rides with local traveling agencies for Polar bear viewing, helicopter rides, town tours and dog sledding. I was very impressed by their Rocket Green project where they produced hydroponic vegetables to benefit the local community and shoulder the cost of living in Churchill. Honestly, for the 2.5 weeks I was there, it was extremely eye opening and completely packed with adventures.

Volunteers’ responsibilities included kitchen duties such as dishwashing, stocking and cafeteria maintenance, as well as housekeeping such as bathroom and shower cleaning, room preparation and laundry. Generally, bear seasons are the busiest seasons in Churchill and the research center had incoming and outgoing guests pretty much everyday. So if you are planning to sign up for volunteering during bear seasons, just be prepared that things move fast. Staff and volunteers communicated via Slack and we got our schedule on Teamup.

Volunteers work 36 hours for 2 weeks with recreational activities, transportation and shared accommodations included. I shared a dorm room with 3 other volunteers. The room can house up to 4 people so it could get a bit crowded with 2 bunker beds but I was lucky that the other volunteers were very good roommates so we got along really well. But do expect to share a room with 3 other people and if there’s conflict, the best way to approach it is communicating with each other like adults.

All of us have communicated beforehand with the Field Station Coordinator at the time for expectations before we signed up but when we got there, there were still some surprises. I personally thought we’d get the weekends off to ourselves; one volunteer thought that we got to go on multiple Tundra Buggy and helicopter rides; another volunteer thought that she would help the research team as part of the volunteer work according to the volunteer expedition description.

I believe that the description incorporates both long-term and short-term volunteer duties. Short-term volunteering is 2 weeks and open to the public (what I did); long-term volunteering, is through a Canadian youth program (2 volunteers for 3 months). Responsibilities for long-term volunteers are more varied including night duties, research and Rocket Greens harvest, guest interactions, community outreach and tours as well as helping out with kitchen duties as extra hands.

The arranged schedule for short-term volunteers was us working 6 days, having 1 day for a Tundra Buggy ride to see the Polar bears, working another 6 days and having 1 day for a town tour and dog sledding. Each working day was 6 hours. The 2 tour days were considered off days for us and it was really just 1 experience per each instead of multiple. And we didn’t get helicopter rides. We later learned that helicopter riders for volunteers were only available if there was space so it wasn’t guaranteed. This all seemed to be communicated loosely and wasn’t very clear.

Volunteers were also allowed to rent a vehicle once a week if there was one available to go out and explore on our own. The staff was very good about not strictly abiding that rule and let us take turns to put our names down for a vehicle so we could rent more than once and tag along whoever wanted to go. During bear season however, it was a bit difficult to get a vehicle because of capacity. Staff, researchers and guests get prioritized before volunteers and some of the vehicles were behind in maintenance so it wasn’t unusual to ask for a vehicle and not get it. That’s also something to keep in mind if you want to rent a vehicle. It’s best to reserve it first, then check on the day of the reservation to see whether one is actually available.

I want to be honest about my experience because I want to set a realistic expectation for whoever is interested. During our stay there, we asked for a day off to ourselves and another Buggy ride, they were both granted so the point I want to make is that if you are open and respectful when ask for something, the staff is usually pretty good about it. If they really can’t grant your wish, it’s probably because things are happening so quickly that they just couldn’t accommodate everyone. I was pretty persistent in asking for a vehicle whenever I wasn’t working so that got us out quite a bit but if you don’t get a vehicle as hoped, acknowledge and move on.

I also learned that the research center has been financially struggling since COVID and its green building construction in 2011; the Field Station Coordinator resigned when I was there, which left the Executive Director manning everything. The season left the staff overwhelmed and dependent on volunteers to keep the lights green.

Out of curiosity, I found the research center's public balance sheets online. I see a handsome amount of liabilities; and I used to work in non-profit so I completely sympathized with them and understand that they need volunteers. All of the volunteers didn’t mind working at all and we wanted to help the center and the staff; however, all of us came a long way to Churchill to enjoy its nature and wildlife and we wanted to be out there as much as we can just like the rest. We felt that without us advocating for ourselves, we wouldn’t get the experience we went there for. In terms of renting a car and joining activities, we also felt that logically, it makes more sense to prioritize short-term volunteers after the guests because we were only there for 2 weeks, then long-term volunteers, and lastly the staff because they live in Churchill and have more opportunities to participate than the rest of us.

So the 4 stars is for an amazing expedition with hiccups in communication and expectations. I honestly want to say that it was no one’s fault but the volunteers got caught in the middle of a storm. Also, this was my experience and I can only speak for my experience there. You may not get the same experience as I did when you go. It may be very different when they are fully staffed.

Fun place for adults and/or kids to experience nature, see bison, birds, red squirrels, and just be outside. We ate at the cafe and had a good lunch there too
