8 dog-friendly beaches and waterfronts in Miami and South Florida

8 dog-friendly beaches and waterfronts in Miami and South Florida

The great news about living in Miami is that there's enough beachfront it would take an entire lifetime to lay a towel out to tan over every square foot. The bad news? Your dog probably can't join you. If you're a pup owner, a gorgeous day spent outside without them feels, well, empty.  Forget Miami's best swimming pools, you're best off hitting up one of our city's gorgeous parks or having lunch alfresco at one of our many dog-friendly restaurants. Or better, you can have an oceanfront day... at Miami's handful of dog-friendly beaches! You in your swimwear, Fido in his fur suit, you soaking in some rays, him fetching coconuts in the ocean and chewing them all up on the sand. Some are open all week and others only for select days and hours, so it’s wise to plan ahead and know the rules before you go. Ready for an awesome beach day with your doggo? Study up below and remember to pack plenty of water for your good boy/girl—plus, like, an extra 4,000 towels because they are going to get very sandy and smelly.

The best September events in Miami

The best September events in Miami

Thought autumn was around the corner? Not to bum you out, but in Miami, September is basically Summer: The Redux, without as much of the frantically running around in search things to do with your kids (because, finally, they’re back at school). The good news: You can still enjoy Miami Spice, the city's epic restaurant months. Since the weather hasn't quite cooled down yet, your weekends likely involve trips to Miami’s many beaches and beautiful pools, but if you’re feeling festive, you can opt to sweat it out at a pumpkin patch in Miami (yes, they exist). We know it’s tough to resist a seasonal outing, even if our city and its weather don’t cooperate. And let’s not forget the build-up to Halloween—plenty of spooky happenings are headed your way! So, clear your calendars: These are the best September events in Miami. And don't forget to check back often, as we're constantly adding new events around town. RECOMMENDED: Guide to Miami events

The best pizza in Miami, a definitive guide

The best pizza in Miami, a definitive guide

Lately, Miami has seen a whole lot of major pizza news. (Yes, we realize “major pizza news” reads like the subject line of a DJ Khaled pizza newsletter that should not exist.) In 2023, we reported that a couple of Miami pizza joints earned coveted rankings in the annual 50 Top Pizza USA list, and one study even placed Miami in top 10 pizza cities in the U.S. Since our last update, we gained one of New York’s most venerated pizza spots, Joe’s, with a slice joint now in Wynwood. Roberta’s, too, will make its Miami comeback any day now. But we've lost a couple of Miami favorites, including Stanzione 87 and Paradis. And spots like Old Greg’s (our previous No.1 in Miami) and stalwart Mister 01 have sadly taken some serious hits in consistency. So, before you devour a few slices around town, check out our updated guide to the best pizza in Miami below. You’ll find some worthy newcomers, our hot and fresh pick for Miami's No.1 pizza restaurant and plenty of very good pies, including New York-style, Neapolitan, Detroit squares and more. The best restaurants in Brickell, from glam rooftops to waterfront gems

The best restaurants in Brickell, from glam rooftops to waterfront gems

Here’s a truth about Miamians: We love to complain about Brickell’s nightmare traffic, but then we willingly subject ourselves to it anytime there's an occasion to celebrate basically anything. That’s because the barely-existed-a-generation-ago neighborhood is now home to many of the city’s best restaurants. These typically fall into the categories of glamorous spots helmed by renowned chefs and restaurant groups that spent well into the eight figures creating glittering cathedrals of fine dining. If what you seek for a night out with your significant other is crystal chandeliers, velvet ropes and a meal with a bumping club soundtrack, you'll have no problem stumbling upon one on nearly any Brickell block. But for the neighborhood's best restaurants—including chef-driven concepts, chill seafood spots and, yes, even clubstaurants—we’ve got you covered with our fully vetted guide below. These restaurants in Brickell run the gamut, from affordable options for a post-work happy hour (this is the financial district, after all) to trendy rooftops with sky-high prices to match. The best karaoke nights in Miami to find your five minutes of fame

The best karaoke nights in Miami to find your five minutes of fame

Everyone’s voice deserves to be heard, especially when it comes to karaoke. In Miami, there’s somewhere to sing for a crowd nearly every night of the week—and no shortage of situations, either. You can take the stage at a packed karaoke bar, sing from within the audience or take a quick moment to belt it out from the privacy and comfort of a karaoke-themed bathroom. (More on that later).  As a self-proclaimed “Cher-aoke” star, I’ve sung “Believe” at many of these venues (more times than I’d care to admit) and can guarantee that each humble “stage” is a damn good time. Start warming up those vocal chords and summon the most lyrical among your pals because the best karaoke bars and karaoke nights in Miami are ready to hear you sing. All the Miami Spice menus and deals we’re most excited about this year

Miami Spice is fast approaching, giving us at least one good reason to brave the sweltering journey from our front door to our vehicle and explore the city in the summertime. During Miami’s annual restaurant months (August 1 through September 30), we look forward to two things: an absence of tourists and an abundance of discounted meals from some of our favorite spots around town—plus an excuse to check out all the places we’ve been meaning to try. With 215 participating restaurants (and counting) to choose from this year, you might only be able to make it to a small fraction of them before tapping out. But we’ve combed through all the latest offerings and, considering the impressive showing of Michelin-starred and James Beard-awarded names, you’ll want to make a priority list and start booking pronto. Luna Pasta e Dolci

Luna Pasta e Dolci

4 out of 5 stars

This family-run Italian concept expanded from a casual pasta cafe to a full restaurant steps away in the historic MiMo District. The fact that the original spot still functions as a takeout and delivery-only storefront is a testament to just how good the pasta is here—and how well it travels for a quick and delicious meal at home. The larger restaurant is a welcome addition, though, as the simple menu of homemade pasta (plus a tight selection of antipasti and secondi) are complemented by friendly service and just enough ambiance to elevate a weeknight dinner with the family, friends or even a date. The portions and pricing are refreshingly fair, the beer and wine lists are small but solid and the desserts shouldn't be ignored, either. Our go-to's are the arugula salad, spicy rigatoni (arguably better than much more expensive options around town) and profiteroles.

Silver Mirror Facial Bar

Silver Mirror Facial Bar

This NYC-imported facial bar with two locations in Miami (Brickell and Coral Gables) boasts an impressive variety of tailored options and friendly, no-nonsense estheticians who offer hyper-focused advice as they perform magic on your visage. Eight savory cocktails to sip on in Miami right now

Eight savory cocktails to sip on in Miami right now

We won’t deny the allure of a fruity, tropical cocktail on a hot summer day. But warmer temperatures come with so many other fresh ingredients that ripen beautifully under the sun—tomatoes, for instance—and we think they deserve their moment in our drinks, too. Luckily, several bars and restaurants around Miami agree and this summer, there’s a whole crop of exciting new savory, vegetal and umami cocktails to explore. From pickled martinis to beet-infused cocktails and mozzarella foam-topped drinks, here’s where to try this summer’s savory cocktail trend in Miami. 1. Welcome to the Miami riverfront, one of this summer’s hottest dining destinations

Welcome to the Miami riverfront, one of this summer’s hottest dining destinations

The first time I enjoyed a meal along the Miami River was more than 10 years ago at Garcia’s, a family-owned restaurant and fish market with wood bench seating and a simple menu of fresh seafood staples. Back then and far earlier (the restaurant has been open for more than 40 years), Garcia’s was the go-to on the river, a laidback and affordable spot for locals to sip Coronas, slurp oysters and watch the little cargo boats slip by during golden hour.  Since then, as redevelopment along the short commercial waterway progressed, several more restaurants have popped up on either side of humble Garcia’s, each seemingly more upscale than the last. Never mind that a salty breeze along the waterfront can carry the faint scent of gasoline, fish or pollution. (This is, after all, a working river shipping out loads mostly to the Bahamas.) In the mid-2010s, clubstaurants Seaspice and Kiki on the River created a new scene, pairing waterfront “fine dining” with DJs, dress codes and bouncers. In 2017, The Wharf added to the party scene with its lively outdoor atmosphere, food stalls, multiple bars and weekly programming geared toward young people. Though it stopped operating as a regular venue last year, the pace of new offerings on the Miami River has only quickened. The latest buzzy opening comes courtesy of Elia, the elevated Italian flagship restaurant of the River Landing Shops & Residences development. Miami is getting its first proper Japanese hand roll bar

You can already find them all over L.A. and New York. Soon, Miami will expand its love affair with Japanese food from omakase into a new, more accessible frontier with the opening of OMAKAI hand roll bar. Slated to debut in Brickell on Friday, August 2, OMAKAI hand roll bar is the latest concept from the OMAKAI sushi brand, a small, Miami-based chain beloved for its approachable, high-quality sushi and omakase menus at a variety of price points.  At just under 1,000 square feet, the 27-seat counter-service spot marks Miami’s first proper hand roll bar, offering a menu focused on handcrafted rolls made with soft rice, crispy nori and fresh, meticulously sourced fish. According to the team, this will be the first of several locations to follow, including one in Downtown opening in the coming months. Photograph: Courtesy OMAKAI hand roll bar Similar to omakase counters around town, guests will be able to sit and watch the chefs as they prepare hand rolls and other ultra-fresh delights. Unlike those tasting menu spots, OMAKAI’s hand roll bar offers more flexibility to choose your own adventure. Select from four different set menus ranging from $15 to $34, or order specialty hand rolls, appetizers and sashimi a la carte. Drinks include beer, wine and sake.  OMAKAI hand roll bar is located at 186 SE 12th Terrace in Solaris Brickell. Beginning on August 5, the restaurant will be open for walk-ins only, seven days a week from 11:30am to 10:30pm Sunday through Thursday and to 11:30p

Helmed by meat master James Wright, Klaw offers mainly dry-aged US Prime Beef and American Wagyu prepared over an open fire grill. "With its stunning views of Biscayne Bay and a stylish, nautical-inspired interior, Klaw offers a sophisticated atmosphere that complements its innovative menu," touts The World's Best Steaks listing for Klaw. If you want really, really, really good meat—then maybe consider actually leaving Miami and go to the list’s number one; Parrilla Don Julio, which you’ll find in Buenos Aires’ Palermo district. Bodega El Capricho in JimĂ©nez de Jamuz, Spain and Margaret in Sydney, Australia have taken the second and third slots, respectively. The World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants has been running since 2019, and to get into the list a restaurant has to meet strict quality criteria, with "taste, terroir, character, marbling, cut and preparation" of the meat of extreme importance. A stellar dining experience includes amazing drinks, too—which is why Wine Spectator has just released its 2024 Restaurant Awards list, honoring the world’s best restaurants for wine. Launched in 1981, the awards are divided into three tiers: The Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence and the Grand Award. This year, 2,150, 1,531 and 96 restaurants received awards from more than 75 countries in each respective category. In Miami, dozens of spots made the cut, including several new recipients. Barcelona Wine Bar, Bouchon Bistro, Mastro's Ocean Club, Pastis and Queen Miami Beach were the new additions to the Best of Award of Excellence winners. This distinction is for places offering 350 or more selections, and are “destinations for serious wine lovers, showing a deep commitment to wine, both in the cellar and through their service team,” according to the criteria. First-time winners of the Award of Excellence were Baoli, Casa Vigil Miami, Contessa Miami, Delilah, Osaka and Zaytinya. These restaurants offer wine lists of at least 90 selections and “deliver sufficient choice to satisfy discerning wine lovers.”  In total, the city and surrounding suburbs are home to 48 restaurants with award-winning wine programs. The Spanish restaurant Casa Juancho in Little Havana has the longest-running award-winning wine program, retaining its Best of Award of Excellence since 1996 (basically prehistoric times in Miami). Although Miami does not have any Grand Award restaurants, f

These are the Best of the Best Things to Do in Miami, according to Tripadvisor

Tripadvisor—the crowdsourced ratings and recommendations platform for travelers—just unveiled its annual ranking of the world’s Best of the Best Things to Do. We’re glad they’ve narrowed things down a bit, since navigating the seemingly infinite pages of user-generated reviews and images can start to feel overwhelming. When it comes to Miami, we’re a little biased, but we think we do a pretty great job of steering savvy travelers to the best things to do, eat and see in the city. Still, with upwards of 150 million unique visitors trawling its vast depths each month, Tripadvisor is a trove of data on the world’s top destinations—and we’re curious how our Miami faves stacked up in 2024. The Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Things to Do celebrates the highest-rated experiences and attractions in the world based on Tripadvisor reviews. It’s also broken down by country and category, spotlighting the best food and drink, family-friendly activities, nature excursions and more. At the top of the list, New York’s Empire State Building climbed to the No. 1 attraction globally for the first time ever. The Unvanquished Tour in Portugal’s Porto City, where visitors can explore 2000 years of history in just a few hours, made its debut as the No. 1 best experience in the world for 2024. Globally, Miami didn’t make much of an impression this year, but travelers in the U.S. ranked several of the city’s experiences and attractions among the country’s best of the best. Not surprisingly, we ex

This Downtown Miami brewery is offering penny beers to celebrate its first birthday

Biscayne Bay Brewing Company is turning one year old this July, and to ring in the occasion, they’re basically giving away their craft beer. From 4 to 7pm on Friday, July 19, select pours will be on offer for just 1 cent each, making it an ideal time to sample several of the 12 brews on tap. Though it launched its first taproom in 2014 in Doral, Biscayne Bay Brewing opened its current flagship in a beautifully renovated historic building in Downtown last year—much closer to its namesake body of water. As the first independent brewery to grace Miami’s urban core, the spot has earned a loyal following with crafts including their Miami Pale Ale and the Cuban coffee-inspired La Colada. Photograph: Courtesy Biscayne Bay Brewing Company The new brewery and taproom occupies the third floor of the 100-year-old former Miami Weather Bureau Office building.“With a mildly moody tropical industrial aesthetic, plenty of seating and bar games galore, this third-floor brewery is a great place to sip the day away,” our critic noted of the space. In addition to the penny beers, Biscayne Brewing’s birthday festivities will include a DJ plus the usual $10 cocktails and $8 bites available during happy hour. The event is free, though you can reserve a spot in advance to ensure those bountiful penny beers end up in your hands.
