Turns Out Nothing Is Hotter Than Emma D'Arcy Ordering a Negroni Sbagliato With Prosecco

Are they… you know… ordering a negroni sbagliato… with prosecco in it?

Thanks to House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy, a simple drink order has become a viral queer calling card.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, first of all, do yourself a favor and allow the algorithm to spirit you away to gay TikTok as soon as possible.

For now, here’s the lowdown: On October 1, HBO Max’s official TikTok account shared a clip from a House of the Dragon featurette in which the nonbinary actor and their co-star Olivia Cooke ask each other “getting to know you” questions.

“What’s your drink of choice?” Cooke asks D’Arcy in the clip.

“A Negroni,” D’Arcy replies, to which a grinning Cooke replies: “I was gonna say the same thing.”

But D’Arcy isn’t finished yet, thank you very much. “Sbagliato,” they add, before flirtily leaning forward and adding, almost conspiratorially: “With prosecco in it.”

To a straight layperson, this might sound like nothing more than a couple of actors talking drink orders. But D’Arcy’s words were enough to make a legion of very online gays weak in the knees. Maybe it’s their velvety voice — which, for the record, I would be overjoyed to hear reading the telephone book — or that flirty lean forward, or the palpable chemistry between Cooke and D’Arcy that proves they’re the perfect actor to portray the intentionally homoerotic tension between their characters, friends-turned-enemies Rhaenrya Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. (Side bar: As magnetic as D’Arcy is, one cannot discount the closing power of Cooke replying, “Ooh! Oh, stunnin’!” in her own lovely Manchester accent.)

Suffice it to say, whatever Cooke and D’Arcy are doing in this video has had… quite an effect on people. HBO Max’s original TikTok has racked up 6.8 million views at the time of writing, outpacing any other video of theirs in recent memory. Meanwhile, the TikTok’s audio has been used in nearly 10,000 videos.

While these numbers don’t necessarily constitute a mainstream TikTok trend, if you’re on any sphere of queer TikTok, chances are the “negroni sbagliato” clip unexpectedly took over your For You Page this weekend.

And it’s not just TikTok! There are now thousands of TikToks and tweets of women and nonbinary users thirsting over the video in all its glory.

Apart from being a welcome viral bonding moment for the queer community, it’s also just nice to see thousands of people gushing over a high-profile nonbinary star, while also being conscious and respectful of their pronouns and gender identity (hot!).

As one Twitter user put it: “Respectfully, how do you call a non-binary person daddy?”

For all you gays who have been inspired to devour a negroni sbagliato of your own, a bit of clarification! Negronis are typically made from about one ounce of gin, one ounce of sweet vermouth, and one ounce of Campari, topped off with an orange wheel. However, a negroni sbagliato swaps out the gin for prosecco. So you don’t have to flirtily add “with prosecco in it” when you order your cocktail… although at this point, I wouldn’t blame you one bit.
