Cowboycore, Catherine Deneuve and Bella Hadid in vintage Versace: the Cannes red carpet part two

From Cate Blanchett’s maybe-statement dress to Greta Gerwig in hot-pink Balenciaga, the last few days of the film festival continue to see red carpet show-stoppers

  • Caméra d’or jury member Emmanuelle Béart has been having fun and games with suits and shirts at this year’s festival. Best known for her portrayal of IMF agent Claire Phelps in the 1996 Hollywood hit Mission: Impossible, the French actor’s Dior look, complete with upside down shirt, deserves special mention here. As do the action hero glasses.

  • Wearing one of a host of overtly crinkled dresses that dodged the iron this week in Cannes, Greta Gerwig attended the premiere of L’Amour ouf in this hot-pink Balenciaga couture gown. There was always going to be at least one pink look from the Barbie director who, as jury president, is required to attend almost 70 premieres. The look was completed with armpit-length black opera gloves.

  • Earlier in the day, Bella Hadid had stepped out for a sorbet in a dress made entirely of red and white keffiyehs, in a show of solidarity with Palestine. On the red carpet later, she wore this archival Atelier Versace for the premier of L’Amour ouf (Beating Hearts). The supermodel has worn several vintage looks at this year’s festival, proving designer pieces from down the years can more than hold their own on the red carpet.

  • Diane Kruger seems to be in the mood to shine. She attended the screening of the David Cronenberg film The Shrouds wearing a metallic design from the Atelier Versace Fall-Winter 1997 collection, going on to wear another metallic look, this time lime-green Prada, to an event later in the week.

  • Model Iris Law first appeared in a Vogue editorial as a toddler – she is the daughter of Sadie Frost and Jude Law. So it makes sense that she would have some fashion bravery baked in, opting to wear this quirky Saint Laurent SS18 ensemble to The Shrouds premiere.

  • British actor Lucien Laviscount (Emily in Paris) opted for a fairly standard Dolce & Gabbana suit for the premiere of the comedy Marcello Mio. He had previously worn a corset to an Oscars afterparty, so this was a buttoned-up choice. Could he be trying to up his James Bond credentials, in line with his recent comments that he would be open to play the role?

  • Winnie Harlow is clearly giving her best sartorial yee-haaw in response to the current cowboy trend. The pearls give the western vibe a riviera twist in this design by Australian fashion designer and former co-founder of Ralph & Russo, Tamara Ralph. Harlow’s spin on Americana, to attend the red carpet ahead of a screening of the new Trump biopic The Apprentice, is a smart piece of meta-dressing.

  • Was it an optical illusion or was it a pro-Palestinian statement? This dress worn by Cate Blanchett has been discussed more than most this festival, with many watchers eager for any show of support for the Palestinian cause at such high-profile red carpet events. This Jean Paul Gaultier gown – designed by the Colombian-born French designer Haider Ackermann – has left many people guessing whether the actor, who has previously spoken out against the atrocities of Israel’s war in Gaza, intended to make such a statement.

  • British model and activist Leomie Anderson attended the premiere of Marcello Mio wearing a gown from the Azerbaijani label Sophie Couture. Skirting the line between dramatic and traditionally pretty, it manages to be both.

  • French women’s basketball player Iliana Rupert carries the Olympic Torch for the Paris 2024 Olympic and the Paralympic Games on the Cannes red carpet. However things pan out at the games, this pink Kenzo look with red flowers is a win.

  • Kelly Rowland attended the premiere of Le Comte de Monte-Cristo in a white dress with one-shoulder detail. As with Juliette Binoche last week, wet-look hair was a contradictory do, to avoid any overly on-the-nose glamour. At the premiere of Marcello Mio earlier, Rowland alleged she was racially profiled.

  • The French actor and film-maker Catherine Deneuve attending the premiere of her new film, L’Amour ouf.With Deneuve a longtime seller of her own wardrobe on luxury secondhand resale site ReSee, we wouldn’t be surprised if this understated ensemble, or the one-shoulder Saint Laurent gown she wore earlier in the festival, were up for sale soon.

  • The Killers of the Flower Moon actor Lily Gladstone, who is serving on the jury for this festival, wore Armani Privé to the premiere of L’Amour ouf. The tulle train has a lightness, even if the dark florals single this dress out as a serious look. It was a nice pivot from a custard-yellow Balenciaga dress she had worn earlier in the festival.

  • Lebanese director Nadine Labaki has been having fun, flitting between gowns and a tux, this Cannes. Here she wears an off-the-shoulder dress by Lebanese designer Karoline Lang and a clutch by Beirut-based Sarah’s Bag, two of the Lebanese designers she has championed. As Sleiman Dayaa, her stylist for the festival, told Vogue Arabia: ‘All the Lebanese designers who worked with us on this event made everything with love. It must be a proud moment for everyone.’

  • Rawdah Mohamed, the Norwegian Somali model, was another proponent of the New Look silhouette at Cannes – the first being French singer Yseult, who wore a Dior haute couture look to the Megalopolis premiere that honoured Christian Dior’s iconic ‘New Look’. Mohamed’s choice of all-red feels striking and also in keeping with a mood we are seeing for red red carpet dressing – unlike other red carpets, which are given unexpected updates, you can rely on old-school Cannes to keep the scarlet going.

  • Proving there’s no need to be entirely serious on the red carpet, Emily in Paris star William Abadie accessorised his tux with a big grin at The Apprentice premiere.

  • More proof, if it were needed, that pink and red is an excellent colour combination was provided by actor Aja Naomi King. She attended the premiere of L’Amour ouf in a hot-pink skirt and acid-green top by Miu Miu.
