Treatment options

Ochsner Men's Health Clinic leads the way in care. We offer innovative treatment options to meet your needs, including some you won't find anywhere else in the region.

In addition to medication and traditional surgical treatment options, we offer minimally invasive, low-risk procedures to treat benign prostate hyperplasia, also known as enlarged prostate. Ochsner is one of only a few centers of excellence in the region using the UroLift System, a minimally invasive procedure that relieves symptoms of enlarged prostate.

Treatment options:

  • Medical Therapy - We offer a range of services provided to patients to optimize therapeutic outcomes.
  • The Rezūm System - Rezūm uses steam to treat the extra prostate tissue that is causing symptoms such as frequency, urgency, irregular flow, weak stream, straining and getting up at night to urinate. This treatment does not impact sexual function. It can be performed in a clinic or out-patient setting.
  • The UroLift® System - UroLift® System is a minimally invasive procedure that "lifts" prostate tissue and does not negatively impact sexual function. Typically, patients return home the same day without a catheter.
  • Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) - TURP, the most common surgery to treat BPH, removes prostate tissue. It requires general anesthesia and a longer recovery time. Short-term problems can include bleeding, infection, erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. Patients need a catheter for several days after the procedure. There can be long-term side effects after TURP such as dry orgasm, erectile dysfunction or incontinence.
  • Laser Resection of the Prostate - Laser procedures to remove prostate tissue include photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) and holmium laser enucleation (HOLEP). A laser procedure lessens the bleeding risks compared to TURP, but since prostate tissue is still removed, there can be tissue swelling and some discomfort during healing. A catheter is required after the procedure.

Ochsner Men's Health uses the UroNav guided fusion biopsy system, which combines MRI and ultrasound to provide more accurate prostate biopsies.

If prostate cancer is found, we offer high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) as a treatment option. HIFU is a minimally invasive and effective option that targets and eliminates cancer cells and has a low risk of side effects. This treatment may be particularly beneficial for men over age 65, who have obesity or do not qualify for surgical treatment.

Oral medications are commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction. Still, other options are available if these medications don't work well for you, including:

  • Hormonal treatments
  • Injectable medication
  • Penile implants

There are many possible causes of male infertility. It's essential to work with an expert to determine the cause of the issue and make a treatment plan.

Our clinic offers surgical and nonsurgical methods to treat male infertility. We also work closely with in vitro fertilization (IVF) doctors in the region when needed.

Health is more than just physical. Men's mental health matters, too. Your Ochsner men's health care team can help connect you to mental health services and support that fits your needs. For men going through cancer, we also provide regular support groups.

Ochsner is committed to providing accessible, high-quality care to all our patients. Our LGBTQ+ Health Care team is available to offer additional support when needed.

FAQs

Primary care doctors help men manage conditions, maintain overall health and prevent or treat common illnesses. They will refer you to a specialist if needed. Men's health specialists focus on conditions specific to men, like erectile dysfunction. These experts can access various medications, technology and advanced treatments.

Either one can be a great place to start. Make your first appointment in the Ochsner Men's Health Clinic if you don't already have a regular primary care doctor. However, if you already have a primary care doctor who knows you well, it may be beneficial to start with them. Having a primary care doctor and one or more specialists on your care team is common. No matter who you see first, all your Ochsner care team members will work together to get you the care you need.
