Land and Housing Justice

Multiple years of massive wildfires, power shut-offs and COVID-19 are pushing tenants past their limits. The grip of corporate landlords on our existing housing stock and unchecked evictions drive up our monthly rent.

We believe a healthy community begins with secure shelter, safe from the constant threat of eviction or sweep, backbreaking rents, or that next crisis that could drive us from our home. We envision a county where land and housing are a means of enriching our community and providing economic stability for poor and working people.

Together, as tenants and neighbors, we can create a future where each of us is safe and has access to affordable, dignified housing.

Sonoma County Tenants Union

The Sonoma County Tenants’ Union was born out of the recognition that there is a strong need for a political vehicle for the renter class of Sonoma County. In order to challenge the consolidated power of the landlord class and create a housing system that truly honors “housing as a human right,” we must build a base of organized tenants. Together, we build tenant power through education, advocacy, and grassroots organizing. We build campaigns for transformative housing policies, leadership development, direct action and community.

Somos Tierra

Somos Tierra was born from the need and demand for the liberation of the land from the market, from the resistance and struggle of those of us who have been dispossessed and displaced from our lands. Somos Tierra seeks to ensure that Indigenous and Latine farmworkers from Sonoma County regain stewardship of the land for cultural affirmation, ceremonies, sowing and harvesting according to our ancestral knowledge, and healing collectively by reconnecting with the land. Somos Tierra will be the first land-holding collective in Sonoma County that is dreamt, designed, and directed by and for Latine and Indigenous campesinos.

Our Platform

– Aura Aguilar, board member of Sonoma County Tenants Union (SCTU)

"I joined SCTU during the pandemic when I was a housing counselor and I was seeing so many of my clients at risk of eviction and struggling to find affordable housing. I was so inspired by the SCTU members who welcomed me as a tenant, shared my frustration with the lack of support for tenants, and who never hesitate to join the fight with their neighbors."
