Playmobil does some great ones, we have years of toys from them from Christmas advent calendars. Every year the kids would haul out the box of toys from the previous Christmases and then add to them with the current years.

Our verdict

Playmobil has been a trusted toy brand in children’s homes since the 1970s and for good reason. it’s detailed playsets often include distinctive characters and accessories, encouraging hours of imaginative play and the Playmobil Christmas Baking Advent Calendar does all this and more.

The Advent calendar features 24 good-quality festive surprises from Santa's bakery, including Santa himself, his helpers and a fully-stocked bakery kitchen to create a fun and seasonal scene that your little one will adore putting together over the month of December. They will also make cute decorations you’ll love reminiscing with, in the future.

Each figure and accessory are robust and beautifully detailed and can be placed against the colourful cardboard background. There are even real baking accessories included: three biscuit cutters and a Playmobil biscuit stamp. Not bad for £20!

We got one for DD (then nearly 3 yo) last year. She loved opening the little windows and building the scene. On some days the toy was not as exciting but at that age she did not care much. I think I will get another one this year - but mainly because I love Playmobil!

We couldn't afford five advent calendars when we were little so mum and dad bought one, and would initial each door so we took it in turns (so I'd have the 1st, 6th, 11th etc). It was always Cadbury and we used to get just as excited seeing what little picture was behind your chocolate.

For some, chocolate for breakfast is an essential part of Christmas, and the Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Chocolate Advent Calendar delivers a tasty morsel every day – at a really great price!

Unlike some brands, the chocolate is scrumptious and satisfying, and you get a bigger treat on Christmas Eve. The picture on the front is bright and cheerful and will look great when on display. Happily, it is also fully recyclable and suitable for vegetarians too.

I'm going to get this Schleich Horse Club calendar for DD who is horse mad.

Our verdict

The Schleich Horse Club Calendar is an excellent toy advent calendar for children who love horses. It tells the story of Sofia who has a delightful idea for Christmas Eve - to spend it in the hayloft with her Icelandic mare, its foal, her faithful dog, and a little squirrel. She's been preparing for this special night by secretly stashing surprises in the hayloft each day for 24 days.

In addition to the horse and it’s foul, the doll (Sofia herself) and the cute dog and squirrel, this advent calendar is packed with toy food items and a tiny sleeping bag, all of which are beautifully designed and durable. Plus, we love the overall design of the calendar, which is not only festive and bright, but also showcases a beautiful animal theme.

Although it’s not a cheap option, this toy advent calendar doubles up as a perfect Christmas gift that can be played with year-round and for many years to come. If your child isn’t a fan of horses, the Schleich brand has plenty of other advent calendar options including Farm World and Dinosaurs.

Wooden and reusable advent calendars that are large enough to be filled with a variety of goodies, and durable enough to “grow” with your child – and be used every year, are a popular choice amongst Mumsnetters who love the freedom to choose what goes into each little box or container, and we think that the Juegoal Advent Calendar offers this and more.

This top-quality, square wooden frame is made with 25 beautiful little pull-out drawers, each perfectly handcrafted with special words, festive pictures (like Christmas trees and reindeer) and numbers to entice little hands to open them.

Each drawer varies in size, but most are large enough to hold miniature toys, sweets, toy cars, hair clips or mini stationary items like erasers. Measuring at ‎27.94cm x 5.59cm x 30.48cm, this reusable advent calendar is the perfect size for a child’s room or your living room and can be used year-round to store any small items.

Our verdict

The classic Melissa & Doug Countdown to Christmas Advent Calendar is a beautiful keepsake that your little one will look forward to seeing every year, and it’s a good option if you’re steering away from sweet or chocolate advent calendars.

This one offers a great introduction to the concept of an advent calendar as it’s fairly simple for little kids to use and introduces concepts such as counting, colours etc. However, just a note that the magnets could be a potential choking hazard and your child should be monitored whilst playing with it.

Made from robust wood and decorated in festive red and green. Each day your little one can remove a magnetic ornament from the tree to reveal the dates as they countdown towards the big day.

The bottom of the tree is a handy bauble storage box too, so you won’t lose any and we’re big fans of the holiday poem on the back that adds a bit of festive cheer to this delightful first advent calendar.

When will kids’ Advent calendars go on sale?

Many parents like to be super organised about Christmas, so many online retail sites such as Amazon already have children’s Advent calendars in stock. In addition, independent retailers and high street shops such as John Lewis and Boots started to sell their Christmas stock in September.

What to look for in the best kids' Advent calendars

When selecting the perfect advent calendar for your kids, consider their age, interests, and the type of daily surprises that will make their holiday season truly magical. Here are a few more factors to consider:

Keepsakes: A beautiful advent calendar whose appearance signals the start of Christmas will be a cherished keepsake that your children will love into adulthood. From small wooden chests of drawers that reveal a new part of the nativity scene each day to gorgeous illustrations of festive scenes that can be reused year after year, there’s a wonderful keepsake out there for every family.

Chocolate: A small sweet treat as part of breakfast is a memorable part of Christmas for many. Chocolate advent calendars are available in most supermarkets from the end of summer until the early days of December. Cheap and cheerful, they may feature popular children’s TV shows like Paw Patrol, contain favourite types of chocolate, and hopefully be recyclable. MooFree and Kinnerton are great brands to check out if your child has food allergies.

Toys and activities: Alternatively, whatever your child's interests, there will be a non-chocolate advent calendar to suit them too. However, to avoid filling your house with plastic tat, it’s a good idea to check what is included to ensure it will be useful or enjoyable to your child. LEGO, LOL Dolls, cosmetics, electronic game components and puzzles are all excellent options.

Traditional: A beautifully illustrated advent calendar that simply counts down towards the 25th without any kind of ‘treat’ is a lovely way to build excitement the old-fashioned way. If the doors are opened carefully, they can be reused and make great gifts.

DIY: Some lovely craft sets can be used to make your own bespoke advent calendar that will be perfect for your child. They are usually cheap, so you can buy food treats or small gifts that suit your budget.

Age recommendations: It’s essential to buy an advent calendar that suits your child's age. For example, LEGO, Playmobil and other toy-based products will contain small pieces that won’t be suitable for under threes.

Price: Christmas is an expensive time, and you should only spend what you can afford. Remember, your children will receive gifts on the 25th, so don’t feel you need to spend lots. However, if you have the budget, purchasing a keepsake Advent calendar that may still be in use by your future grandchildren is a lovely idea.

What is the best advent calendar for kids?

Based on our extensive research, we believe that the Playmobil Christmas Advent Calendar deserves the top place on our list, because not only is it great quality and value for money, but it’s also a very popular advent calendar amongst parents on our Forum and children can play with the individual characters for years.

How we chose the best Advent calendars for kids

To bring you our helpful summary of the best kids’ advent calendars, we carefully evaluated the suggestions made by Mumsnet users. It is parents, after all, who know best which products will be loved by a wide range of children. We also investigated the recommendations of specialist retailers, independent childcare experts and education specialists, as well as analysing authentic consumer reviews.

Once we had out shortlist, we then spent hours analysing the overall quality of each item inside the advent calendars on our list, whilst considering additional factors like the overall value for money and longevity of the product. For instance, only the best quality reusable and felt advent calendars on the market made it onto our list this year.

Our pick of the top 20 kids’ advent calendars includes various fun themes, foods (including free from), popular toys and activities. You’ll find a festive countdown to suit all budgets, interests and age ranges.

When should kids start advent calendar?

The age at which your child can start using an advent calendar will vary depending on the type of calendar you pick and your family preferences. Here are some guidelines:

Traditional advent calendars: These often have small doors or compartments that children open each day to reveal a surprise, such as a piece of chocolate or a small toy. Many parents start this tradition with their children when they’re toddlers or preschoolers, typically around the ages of two to three. At this age, children can understand the concept of counting down to Christmas and enjoy the daily surprises.

Activity or story advent calendars: Some advent calendars are designed with daily activities or short stories related to Christmas. These are ideal for older children who can read and participate in activities. Starting around ages five to six is common for this type of calendar.

LEGO or building advent calendars: LEGO offers advent calendars with daily building activities like the Star Wars Advent Calendar. These are typically recommended for children aged five and older who can handle small parts safely.

Ultimately, the choice of when to start with an advent calendar depends on your child’s developmental readiness and your family's traditions. However, it's important to ensure that the calendar's content is age-appropriate and safe for your little one.

Who does the best advent calendar?

The best advent calendar for your child will ultimately come down to individual likes and preferences. However, here are some of the most popular brands that have made it onto our list:

LEGO advent calendars: LEGO offers a range of advent calendars, including LEGO City, LEGO Star Wars, and LEGO Harry Potter. These calendars feature daily building activities and are a hit with kids who enjoy building and collecting LEGO sets.
