Babymel George

The Babymel George is a unisex backpack designed for parents constantly on the move. It is spacious enough to fit in spare clothes, bottles, food and nappies for two children, with plenty of room to spare.

Despite its size, Babymel George is nice and lightweight, so it's easy to carry, and the flexible material means it's a cinch to fold up and store, too.

We love the wipes dispenser pocket at the side of the bag – no, really, this is the kind of stuff we get excited about (we don't get out much any more). But this really is a design feature any parent will appreciate. You can grab a wipe through an easy-lift flap on the outside of the bag when those dirty bum/mucky fingers/grubby face emergencies strike. It even comes with a free changing mat. Big tick.

Can it fit everything you need to carry on a day out?

The main compartment is extremely roomy because the bag is rectangular in shape. You can easily fit several changes of clothes in there as well as two bottles in the insulated holders. The only downside is that it's easy to lose things inside the main section of the bag if you're not the Monica Geller type. Thankfully, the double zip across the top of the bag and down the sides makes it easier to have a root around.

If you're looking for a changing bag that can double up as a return-to-work bag then the Babymel George could easily pass as office wear. The padded tech pocket inside the main compartment is perfect for a laptop or tablet and we're sure you can put those other pockets to good use.

Are the Babymel George bottle holders any good?

The bag has two insulated bottle holders, so it's great for those long days out when you need to keep drinks cool or hot for up to four hours – we tried them out and they worked a treat. Perfect. An elasticated band keeps them secure when you're slinging the bag over your shoulders and dumping it on the floor, too. Genius.

What's the changing mat like?

The machine-washable changing mat is a decent size and folds away with a Velcro fastening. Amazingly, it keeps its compact shape unlike some of those stubborn picnic blankets and sleeping bags we've all owned that never again look like they did when you first unfurled them (or just never again fold up).

Is the backpack comfortable to carry?

The Babymel George is extremely lightweight and the shoulder straps are wide and padded, so it won't dig in when you're doing your pack mule thing.

Our tester put everything but the kitchen sink in the bag and didn't break a sweat carrying it on long days out. If you'd rather attach the changing bag to a buggy then you can use the built-in Velcro clips. Its bulk might mean it gets in your way a bit when it's hanging from a buggy, but it is an option when you don't want to carry it.

Is the Babymel George waterproof?

The changing bag is made from water-resistant fabric and held up well under testing. All the contents remained dry after our tester was caught in a downpour. Any grubby marks or stains wiped clean easily and the bag dried quickly.

What does the Babymel George backpack look like?

While it's probably not, the most stylish bag we tested it is incredibly functional and has a classic look to it. It's available in blue/oatmeal or black/grey colours.

Its water-resistant fabric with contrasting faux leather trim makes it perfect for couples wanting to reach a compromise over which changing bag would suit them both.

Is the Babymel George good value for money?

The Babymel George is fantastic value for £60. It's a lightweight and hardy bag that comes with an impressive list of additional features. If you're a parent of two kids close together – or twins, then this is one piece of kit you won't need to double up on.
