July 22, 1930

RHP Phil Collins becomes the second pitcher in franchise history to hit two home runs in a game as he improves to 10-3 with an 11-5 win over the Pirates at Baker Bowl.

July 22, 1966

Clay Dalrymple breaks up Gaylord Perry’s no-hitter with an eighth-inning single. It marks the second time the Phillies catcher has spoiled a no-hit bid in the eighth inning at Candlestick Park, as he collected the only hit in Juan Marichal’s major league debut on July 19, 1960.

July 23, 1930

The Phillies crank out a franchise-high 27 hits, but fall to the Pirates, 16-15, in 13 innings in the second game of a doubleheader at Baker Bowl.

July 23, 1962

RF Johnny Callison’s third-inning single at Wrigley Field is the first hit seen live by television audiences in Europe, thanks to a transatlantic broadcast via the Telstar satellite, which had been launched two weeks earlier.

July 23, 1978

Steve Carlton becomes the 78th pitcher in MLB history to win 200 games in a 13-2 victory over the Houston Astros at Veterans Stadium.

July 24, 1995

The Phillies drop an 11-3 decision to the Colorado Rockies, despite Omar Olivares’ pinch-hit home run, the first by a Phillies pitcher since Schoolboy Rowe in 1943.

July 24, 1998

The Phillies sweep a doubleheader against Florida, winning both games in the 12th inning, 6-4 and 7-6, as Mark Parent catches all 24 innings. No. 1 draft pick Pat Burrell agrees to terms on a five-year contract.

July 24, 2001

SS Tomas Perez becomes the second Phillie in club history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game in a 10-2 win over Montreal.

July 24, 2002

RHP Brett Myers makes his major league debut, giving up just one run on two hits over eight innings in a 4-2 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

July 24, 2003

With a grand slam and sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth, right fielder Bobby Abreu ties a club record for RBI in an inning during a 14-6 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Former GM Pat Gillick is inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

In the latest Opening Day in franchise history due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Phillies fall to the Marlins, 5-2, at an empty Citizens Bank Park to begin the condensed, 60-game season.

July 25, 2021

Beloved former Phillies executive David Montgomery is posthumously honored in Cooperstown with the Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award, given to an individual whose efforts broadened the game’s appeal and whose character, integrity and dignity is comparable to that of the award’s namesake.

July 25-28, 1951

RHP Robin Roberts (7/25 at STL), LHP Ken Johnson (7/26 at STL), RHP Bubba Church (7/27 at CHI) and RHP Russ Meyer (7/28 at CHI) set a club record with four consecutive shutouts.

July 25, 1980

3B Mike Schmidt hits his 260th home run to break Del Ennis’ club record and RHP Dick Ruthven ties a Vet record by pitching 12 innings in a complete-game, 5-4 win over Atlanta.

July 25, 2015

LHP Cole Hamels pitches the 13th no-hitter in franchise history, blanking the Cubs, 5-0, at Wrigley Field. He walks two and strikes out 13 in what turns out to be his final start for the Phillies, as he is traded to Texas six days later. It also marks the fourth no-hitter caught by Carlos Ruiz, tying him with Jason Varitek for the most in major league history.

Starting at second base for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chase Utley plays his final game at Citizens Bank Park, a 7-3 Phillies win.

July 26, 1948

Eddie Sawyer is named manager of the Phillies after four and a half seasons managing in the club’s minor league system.

July 26, 2008

PH Greg Dobbs hits a three-run homer vs. Atlanta at Citizens Bank Park, giving the Phillies a 10-9 win. It is his 20th pinch hit of the season, matching the club record set by Doc Miller in 1913.

July 26, 2018

The Phillies tie the club record with seven home runs in a 9-4 win over the Reds in Cincinnati. Carlos Santana hits one and Maikel Franco, Rhys Hoskins and Nick Williams have two each. LHP Ranger Suárez earns the win in his major league debut.

July 27, 1935

José “Chile” Gómez, a native of Mexico, becomes the first Hispanic player to appear in a Phillies uniform when he starts at second base in a 5-0 win over the Braves in Boston.

July 27, 1950

RF Del Ennis sets a club record by driving in seven runs over two consecutive innings (seventh and eighth) as the Phillies clobber the Cubs, 13-3, at Shibe Park.

July 28, 1962

Nineteen people are killed and over 100 are injured when the “Phillies Special” train bringing fans to the game against the Pirates at Connie Mack Stadium derails into the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg.

Broadcaster Harry Kalas receives the Ford C. Frick Award during induction ceremonies at the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

July 29, 1983

The Phillies purchase the contract of RHP Larry Andersen from the Seattle Mariners. He makes his Phillies debut the following day with 2.2 innings of relief against the Chicago Cubs at Veterans Stadium.

July 29, 1984

2B Juan Samuel and CF Von Hayes are the first Phillies to hit back-to-back home runs to lead off a game in a 6-4 win over Montreal at the Vet.

July 29, 1989

The Phillies retire LHP Steve Carlton’s No. 32 in a pregame ceremony before 47,277 fans at Veterans Stadium.

July 29, 2018

Former 1B Jim Thome is inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

July 30, 1928

Acquired days earlier from Fort Wayne, future Hall of Famer Chuck Klein makes his major league debut as a pinch-hitter in an 8-7 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Baker Bowl.

July 30, 1950

RHP Robin Roberts tosses his third consecutive shutout, blanking the Pirates, 10-0, at Shibe Park. It follows a 2-0 victory at Cincinnati on July 22 and a 1-0 win vs. the Cubs on July 25.

July 30, 1991

The Phillies snap a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over San Diego at Veterans Stadium, with John Kruk driving in the winning run with a seventh-inning RBI double. It marks the first of 13 consecutive wins, which will tie the club record.

July 30, 1995

With what was at the time the largest crowd, an estimated 28,000, ever to attend the ceremony, 3B Mike Schmidt and CF Richie Ashburn are inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

July 30, 2006

After RF Bobby Abreu and RHP Cory Lidle are traded to the New York Yankees for four prospects, OF Michael Bourn makes his major league debut in a 9-2 Phillies win over the Florida Marlins to finish off a doubleheader sweep.

INF Edmundo Sosa is acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals for LHP JoJo Romero.

Wall of Famer John Vukovich is born in Sacramento, Calif.

Two days after being acquired from Cleveland, LHP Cliff Lee makes his Phillies debut in San Francisco with a complete-game, 5-1 victory, holding the Giants to one run on four hits.

July 31, 1982

2B Manny Trillo’s major league record for consecutive errorless games ends at 89 when he makes a seventh-inning error in a 2-0 win over Chicago. He also sets a ML record for consecutive errorless chances, 479, during the streak.

July 31, 1994

LHP Steve Carlton, the winningest pitcher in Phillies history, is inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

July 31, 1997

The Phillies defeat the St. Louis Cardinals, 2-1, in 10 innings. RHP Curt Schilling strikes out 11 batters, but the highlight of the game is RF Tony Barron’s diving catch of a Gary Gaetti line drive in the fifth inning.

Left fielder Pat Burrell becomes the first player from the 2008 World Series champions to be inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame.
