A driver left fighting for his life after a crash on ice has begun a landmark legal action against highways chiefs for failing to grit properly.

The unnamed man, 47, spent two days on life support after a three-car crash and wants thousands in damages.

Dozens of other motorists had accidents on the A30 in Devon and Cornwall before it was closed last January 21.

The Highways Agency said salt laid down was washed off by rain which froze. If he wins it would be the first such success for failure to protect.

His solicitor said: "It could lead to multiple claims."
