Cover Story (view full-size image): Mount Guna is a composite volcano in northern Ethiopia with a summit at 4120 m (a.s.l.). This volcano has a large base at roughly 2800 metres above sea level and comprises a caldera crater, many volcanic necks, and steep slopes. Particularly striking is that on the Harmonized Soil Map of Africa, the volcanic areas at high altitude in Africa, and particularly in Ethiopia, have not been mapped as Andosols. Our investigation indicates that Andosols, Leptosols, and Phaeozems also occur, while the Harmonized Soil Map of Africa indicates that the dominant soils are Leptosols and Luvisols. Andosols have been reported to occur on similar volcanoes in other parts of Africa, e.g., in Rwanda (Dondeyne et al., 1993; Mizota and Chapelle, 1988), on the Simian Mountains and on Mount Kenya (Frei, 1978; Hurni and Messerli, 1981), and on Mount Kilimanjaro (Zech et al., 2011). View this paper
