This study presents a smartphone-based citizen science tool leveraging AI and Deep Learning (DL) algorithms for the real-time detection of plant diseases and insect pests. The mobile application, available for Apple® and Android™, empowers farmers and agronomists with accurate diagnostics and actionable insights, enhancing crop management practices. Field-tested in real agricultural settings, the app achieved up to 87% confidence in detecting Tuta absoluta infestations. It integrates geospatial data for precise location tracking and supports continuous improvement by incorporating new data and AI models. This innovative tool aligns with sustainable agriculture goals, promoting proactive pest management and reduced reliance on chemical treatments, supporting broader initiatives like the Green Deal and the EU’s biodiversity strategy for 2030.
