Cover Story (view full-size image): The rising incidence of metabolic syndrome among the elderly, especially females, necessitates targeted interventions. Curcumin, a polyphenol derived from turmeric, has diverse health benefits. In this research, we established its ameliorative effects on obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) using aged female mice fed a high-fat high-sugar diet, representative of a Western diet. The beneficial effects of curcumin in these mice are attributed to reduced body fat composition and diminished hepatic lipid deposition, mediated by downregulated adipogenic signaling in white adipose tissue and improved hepatic insulin homeostasis. These findings highlight curcumin supplementation as a potential strategy to address age-associated metabolic disturbances under nutritionally challenged conditions in aged females. View this paper
