Cover Story (view full-size image): This study analyzes the components of plant disease resistance mechanisms involved in pathogen detection, signal transduction, and defense response. Effectors produced by bacteria, fungi, and viruses stimulate plant receptors to activate the signaling cascade. Activated receptors then directly function as transcription factors or signaling pathways including hormone production, hypersensitive response, reactive oxygen species production, and genes involved in defense response. These defense-related compounds actively inhibit pathogen intrusion through stomata closure and/or make pathogen infection more difficult. Moroever, other organelles further improve defense response including peroxisomes and chloroplasts produce phytohormones as well as nuclei, golgi apparatus and endoplasmic reticula, which trigger antimicrobial protein production.
