Cover Story (view full-size image): The use of biomarker testing to inform cancer care decisions is increasing. Traditionally, biomarkers are measured from tumor samples obtained through tissue biopsies. However, this presents several challenges due to the risky and time-consuming nature of such a biopsy. A liquid biopsy is an emerging technique that uses a sample of peripheral blood to identify biomarker information. This non-invasive procedure can be used as an alternative or complementary approach to tissue-based testing.
