Cover Story (view full-size image): This original article provides evidence for the protective effect of coffee consumption, particularly caffeinated coffee, on total and cancer mortality in an adult Mediterranean population. Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, and recent evidence supports that coffee has been associated with lower incidence of some chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). A recent meta-analysis based on 40 studies with 3,852,651 subjects from different countries has also shown a protective effect of usual coffee consumption on mortality from all-cause, CVD and cancer mortality, with the lowest mortality observed for the consumption of 2–3.5 cups per day. However, few studies have examined the role of coffee consumption on mortality in Mediterranean populations with high life expectancy and healthy diets; this study adds new evidence in this sense.
