Cover Story (view full-size image): Marine pollution has attracted great interest amongst the research community, as pollutants disturb the natural balance of ecosystems and might threaten environmental and human health. In this work, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and macro and trace elements were investigated in two major fish species, Dicentrarchus labrax and Solea solea, collected from Thermaikos Gulf, in Greece. A low prevalence of pesticides and selected pharmaceuticals was reported. At the same time, health risk assessment did not unveil an unacceptable risk for adults, apart from one sample with Hg above the regulatory levels. However, for children, the calculated hazard quotient values for Hg in all cases and for two cases of As detection were higher than the threshold value of 1, indicating a potential risk.
