Happy National Intern Day! For the sixth consecutive summer, DWS has participated in the State of North Carolina Internship Program through the Department of Administration. This program has helped introduce bright young students to #NCWorks and to the field of workforce development, providing a potential pipeline of future leaders for our system. This year, we have been thrilled to have five interns through this program, working with our division across the state. Let's meet them! • Akeem Booker, a graduate student at East Carolina University pursuing a Master's in Social Work, is interning at the Pitt County NCWorks Career Center in Greenville, and contributing to workforce development efforts in the Northeast Prosperity Zone. • Grant Keaton, a student at Fayetteville State University, is interning at the Cumberland County NCWorks Career Center, and has assisted with the Mid-Carolina Workforce Development Board “My Future’s So Bright” youth internship program, among other projects. Grant is working toward a bachelor’s in Business Administration with a Management concentration. • Neha Jonnalagedda, a rising junior at UNC Chapel Hill majoring in Economics, is interning with the DWS Finance/Budget units at our Central Office in Raleigh. • Macy Erin Daniels, a rising senior at Saint Augustine's University majoring in Sociology, is interning at the NCWorks Career Center in Charlotte, while also visiting and learning about all the other Career Centers in the Southwest Prosperity Zone. • Hayden Driver, a student at North Carolina State University majoring in Psychology/Sociology, is interning at the NCWorks Career Center in Catawba County while also working in various counties throughout the North West Prosperity Zone. We wish these outstanding interns all the best! Last month, three of our DWS staff - Drew Long, Director of Foreign Labor and Agricultural Services; Tim Dollyhite, Agriculture Employment and Outreach Services manager; and Sonja Godsey, manager of Foreign Labor programs - attended the national Labor Standards Agency Forum, hosted by the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, DC. The purpose of the Forum was to bring together labor agency leaders from across states and territories to strengthen partnerships, share best practices, discuss key priorities and emerging trends in labor enforcement, and identify ways to strengthen worker protections and outcomes. Drew Long helped facilitate an hour-long breakout workshop, “Effective Engagement and Enforcement in the Agriculture Industry.” He shared with attendees how North Carolina workforce professionals collaborate with our state and federal partners to support farmworkers and farmers.
