Sisk monthly: Review of June 2024

Here are some of the key stories from across Sisk that happened during June...from our new HQ in Dublin through to a completed data centre in Denmark.

Sisk’s new HQ opened by Tánaiste Micheál Martin

Our new HQ in Citywest, Dublin, was officially opened in late June by Tánaiste, Micheál Martin

At the very end of June, Tánaiste Micheál Martin (Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland) officially opened our new Dublin HQ! We celebrated with over 150 staff members, clients and key stakeholders joining us on the day.

The 3-storey building in Citywest was created around our key strategic priorities including, People & Culture, Net Zero, Digital Transformation and (MMC) Modern Methods of Construction.

Paul Brown, CEO, Sisk, sums the move up perfectly: “While this marks a significant change for Sisk, upholding the values of our founder John Sisk is essential that we look after our people and give them an environment fit for purpose, where they can thrive in their respective careers.”

A big thank you to the many people who helped create our fantastic new HQ and to those who helped make the official open day such a great event.

Sisk included in Financial Times’ European Climate Leaders list

As you may have seen on LinkedIn earlier in June, we were delighted to have been ranked 3rd amongst Irish companies, and 5th in terms of all companies involved in the ‘Construction & building materials’ sector, in the list of Europe’s Climate Leaders published recently in the Financial Times.

At Sisk our vision is to be at the heart of change, and as such sustainability is one of our key focuses. Overall, we’ve been ranked 114th on the 600-strong list – a great achievement.

The reduction of our core emission intensity between 2017 and 2022 was 15.3% and we continue to push to improve this.

We are also pleased to share that we have been awarded an Ecovadis Gold Medal (97th percentile).

Denmark data centre powers on

The CPH01 data centre project in Denmark

Congratulations to our Sisk data centre team who successfully completed and recently handed over the CPH01 data centre to one of our major multinational clients.

The CPH01 project involved constructing the shell and core of a single-storey, two-Colo data centres with an administration building, covering civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, telecom, and security scopes.

Fantastic work by all involved!

VIPs welcomed at Weir Mill

Sisk's apprentices and the management team at Weir Mill were interviewed by an ITV film crew

Sisk’s site in Stockport - the Weir Mill Regeneration Project - is a £70 million initiative aimed at revitalising a historic site into a vibrant community hub. This project is a part of the larger £1 billion town centre regeneration plans being driven by Stockport’s Mayoral Development Corporation.

In late June during a site visit, our apprentices and management team had the privilege to be interviewed by high-profile figures including Rachel Reeves, Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram, accompanied by a ITV film crew. The discussions focused on the importance of collaborative efforts to boost the local economy in Stockport, strategies for upskilling the youth and involving them in community-building activities, and the vision of creating a dynamic and sustainable urban community at Weir Mill.

Celebrating Pride month across Sisk

Sisk celebrated Pride month across the business, including joining the Pride parade in Dublin

At Sisk we are committed to diversity, equality and inclusion. Members of the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies make up our True Colours Employee Resource Group.

The group's goals are to build a culture at Sisk where everyone is appreciated, included, encouraged, and feels safe because we value acceptance and belonging.

June was Pride month, and across Sisk we celebrated Pride in a number of ways - from Tool Box Talks to coffee mornings - across our work places. It was great to see such a large turnout at our first Dublin Pride parade participation to finish off the month of celebration.

5 million accident-free hours celebrated

Last year Sisk celebrated 5 million Accident-Free Hours at Johnson & Johnson (J&J) – Vision Care facility in Limerick. Sisk have been working with J&J in Limerick since 1994.

Our teams over the years have fostered a safety culture that is second to none alongside our long-term supply chain partners and client, with particular mention to the late Toddy O’Brien, a former safety officer at Sisk.

Sisk prides itself on exceptionally high safety standards and this record, which has been achieved over a 16-year period from 2007-2023, adds to those standards.

Watch the video below, it's a great insight into the project and its safety culture.

New bridge signals another major milestone

The Roberstown Viaduct Bridge is reinstated by Sisk

The Sisk team on our Limerick-Foynes project completed another major milestone in early June with the reinstatement of the Roberstown Viaduct Bridge.

Our team removed and scrapped the original bridge as it was beyond repair.

The new bridge is the largest of five major structures on the project and consists of two main trusses, each 55 tonnes and 47m long. Total weight of the steel structure is 170 tonnes.

Isle of Man ferry terminal opens for crossings

The Isle of Man Ferry Terminal on the banks of the River Mersey has opened, following construction by Sisk

We've covered the Isle of Man Ferry Terminal project in Liverpool within previous newsletters, but June saw the first public sailings take place, which marked the opening.

Sisk were the main contractor and we're delighted with the finished project, which was a collaboration between the construction and civils sides of Sisk.

Part of the interior of the ferry terminal, with plenty of natural light for departing passengers

The opening of the project was covered in an article by Place North West.

Dominic Hodges, Managing Director, UK Civils, Sisk, is quoted in the article: “Sisk is delighted to complete and handover The Isle of Man Ferry Terminal project and it has been a major undertaking on our part that will add significant value to both Liverpool and the Isle of Man."

Dublin training for graduates and interns

Lots of new skills were learnt during the training of our graduates and summer interns!

In June we delivered training to our graduates and summer interns in Dublin. The graduates learned setting out skills at their induction week in Sept 2023. These skills were further developed at their three-month module in December 2023, which they have practiced over the subsequent months.

The module in June included practical guidance of setting out Holding Down bolts, demonstrations of some of the latest technology such as 3D scanners, HP Siteprint and the latest developments in relation to Prism Targets.
