Is Remote Work Right for You?

It’s no secret that remote work is on the rise. And why not? Cloud-based platforms such as ServiceNow, Salesforce, and AWS allow for fully distributed teams to work seamlessly and efficiently. As a recruitment consultant at Nelson Frank, many of my candidates want to move more into remote work. Some for family reasons, some to help increase their productivity.

But let’s talk about you and your job search. Is remote work right for you?

Before searching for a remote job, you should ask yourself why you want one. How would remote work benefit you? You might find that being out of the office is more difficult than you think. Take inventory of all the things you love about on-site work. Then, weigh these benefits with the benefits of remote work. You might be surprised by the results.

Make sure your workspace at home is set-up for remote work. Developers, do you have backlighting for your monitor? Personally, I’ve added a blue-tint filter on my prescription glasses - this helps me work long hours at the computer. Do you have a reliable, stable internet? Make sure your hardware is set up for remote success, and you’re good to go.

Finally, consider whether or not you want remote work because it will increase your productivity, or simply because it’s more comfortable. Make sure that your motivations around remote work are sound; you should want remote work because it allows you greater work-life balance and more ease of access to your work. My most successful remote candidates are highly communicative, responsive, and tenacious. Do you posses these qualities?
