Moment Magazine: Sunday School basics, and, finding brave people to do smart things

Okay, the folks at Moment Magazine challenged me to explain how Sunday School set my moral compass and how that determines what I'm actually doing, late in my lifetime.

Here's the whole article and interview, but the gist is simple.

Mr and Mrs Levin were the couple who escaped to America, after Mr Levin jumped off a train taking him to be killed.

What they taught me, more than sixty years ago:

  • Treat people like you want to be treated.
  • Know when enough is enough.
  • Sometimes be your sister's keeper, your brother's keeper.

With craigslist I rejected maybe 90% of what the bankers told me I could earn, and I've given away at least 70% of the remainder.

As a nerd, being overly literal, it took me maybe sixty years to figure out the sister's keeper/brother's keeper thing.

Now, I figure it's about supporting people, much braver and smarter than me, to help protect the country. That includes military families and vets, and people fighting the fight online against dishonesty, crime and war.

As our infrastructure is attacked, including hospitals, water and power supplies, looks like we all need to work together to protect each other and the country.

That's the Cyber Civil Defense thing I’m doing (with others), like in World War 2. The idea is that everyone who could help played some role. The same thing is needed now.

Part of this is to ask for your help protecting your home and family, and to enlist your help protecting our country's infrastructure. The brave people protecting us need support from everyone.

More to come...

The more we move away from this “rugged individualism” idea and start moving toward mutuality, the better we will all be. Thank you for your good work.

Your comments on the role your Mother and Father played in your formative years in putting in place the character building blocks that have led you to helping thousands is a testimony to how well they imbued their Son with the principle that “ to those whom much is given, much is expected”. #muchrespect #leadership
