I’ve had a bit of a telling off! But it’s taught me a good lesson. A lady emailed me to say she sees me on the news talking about AI chatbots. She said I say how useful they can be for students and office workers but I never mention retired people. I’m not scared of trying new tech, she wrote, but I don’t know what to do with it. This really got to me. She’s absolutely right. She asked for some suggestions so I replied. I said really only she could answer that because it would be specific to her interests and lifestyle but I tried to offer a few examples. This morning she replied and she’s buzzing. She and her husband checked out chatGPT. It wrote him an essay about the Berlin Wall and it’s helping her plan a trip to Eastern Europe. They are very happy! Now they understand what it is, and they feel included. It takes a lot to email someone off the telly - but I’m glad she did. And it’s a lesson for even journalists like me who have been doing this a long time - don’t assume people just know how to dive in.

What a heartwarming revelation! Your insight is a vivid reminder that the ripples of technology touch every shore of society, and no one should be left adrift. The story of the lady and her husband is a testament to the boundless potential of AI to enrich lives, irrespective of age or stage. It’s exhilarating to see how a simple nudge led them to explore and embrace AI, turning curiosity into capability. Your exchange with them is a beautiful illustration of inclusivity in the digital age, proving that technology, when demystified, can be a gateway to new horizons. I really like this!😊 Thank you for sharing this enlightening encounter. It serves as a gentle reminder for all of us in the tech and communication fields to broaden our perspectives and ensure that our narratives are all-encompassing. May we all strive to be as courageous and inquisitive as the couple you described, and as thoughtful and responsive as you have been. Here’s to making the digital world a welcoming space for all!🤗

This article is interesting on this topic - only 2% of people in the UK use AI tools daily and around 30% have not even heard of the most popular AI tools like ChatGPT, so it is always good to step out from our own sphere and realise a lot of people don't know or care about this stuff - https://reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/what-does-public-six-countries-think-generative-ai-news

Intriguing. Yet I'm surprised to hear that Germany and its capital is in Eastern Europe. Do not believe everything AI says. I guess it got confused by the East Side Gallery?

Digital exclusion of older and less abled people is a real thing and so many people don't even realise it. Advice and commentary often assumes that everyone has access and skills - and even some of the most important tasks in day-to-day life (like booking a doctor's appointment or managing utility bills) have become overwhelming for people who 'just want to pick up the phone, not send an email or use an app' (this was a huge frustration to my Mum in her last few years). How brilliant that your reader contacted you (and you responded!). I bet she feels great and more confident now. ☺️

I'm so glad you were able to help and inspire her! I currently do in-person presentations for retirement groups where I go over the basics of AI and how it can be used to their benefit. (I also go over scams to watch out for). Check out ElliQ by Intuition Robotics. It's a closed AI system designed for Seniors. It does everything from help combat loneliness, to logging medical issues for their doctors. Here's the TV News story I did on it that explains more: https://wjla.com/news/local/elliq-intuition-robotics-artificial-intelligence-device-aging-seniors-ai-safety-dor-skuler-technology-medicaitons-blood-pressure-memory-games-fee-subscription-washington-dc-health I think there's still a lot being developed. I love seeing how this technology can help others!

I've been teaching older folk to use tech for years and I find the key is often finding more about them (appreciate you couldnt do this in 1 email) and their interests before introducing tech, for example PlantNet for gardeners, BBC good food for Bakers, or something as simple as Solitare can be the catalyst that gets the hooked. The rise of 'silver tech' cometh, brace yourself for SilverOps 😄 .. lord knows, I nearly qualify.

It should be the opposite of exclusion as there are so many applications for AI with the retired, older and even elderly. As you ellided to in your example, AI assistants that can help non-digital natives navigate the digital world. Or even a AI assistant designed to help elderly people with dementia that uses a voice they are familiar with (partner, children, friend etc), which can help retain knowledge on their behalf, assist them through confusion, and can monitor them 24/7 and report falls to the hospital.

It's something I take into all of my media training sessions - facts are all about context. I've been a tech journalist 30+ years and it's so easy to get caught up in the assumption that stories are interesting in and of themselves when people generally want to know what something is for and why it makes a difference. Massive kudos for you taking the time to respond - from the tone I gather the whole thing has made your day, too!
