A common theme connects the various barriers that emerged from our research and interviews for the Catching the Wave report: companies struggle to fully digest that the world is heading into a tumultuous period of transformational change. The widespread focus on short-term performance from companies, investors, and banks is likely the largest impediment to the successful integration of sustainability. The Catching the Wave report, which we developed together with WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, lays out the barriers holding companies back, the multiple truths they must confront, and the lessons that can be drawn from past disruptions. Each webinar will outline the report’s sustainable transformation framework and how it can help companies translate sustainability integration into commercial success, operational efficiency, and resilience. All companies are learning as they go with the sustainability transformation, so no off-the-shelf blueprint for action exists. The framework in the Catching the Wave report draws on the real perspectives of more than 130 business and sustainability executives. It reflects the best available practical knowledge and experiences of what works for companies in advanced stages of integrating sustainability and how they translate this into commercial success, operational efficiency, and resilience. The framework offers practical guidance in five focus areas: leadership and governance, strategy and planning, progress and commercialization, networks and engagement, and continuity and tenacity. We call these categories: -Face It, -Map It, -Do It, -Shape It, -Connect It. Companies must continuously invest in, revisit, calibrate, and align them. Different companies are at different stages or will choose different entry points. This London Climate Action Week, we are excited to announce the launch of a new guide designed to help companies and financial institutions invest in high-integrity Natural Climate Solutions (NCS).   ERM, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Natural Climate Solutions Alliance (NCSA), and Forest Investor Club (FIC) have developed this report to highlight the climate, financial, environmental, and social benefits of NCS projects and help encourage the flow of private capital into these solutions.   The guide provides the most comprehensive guidance to date and outlines the key stages of the NCS investment process, including how to identify high-integrity NCS projects, conduct thorough due diligence, and implement effective investment strategies, all with the goal of de-mystifying and simplifying the NCS investment process.   In addition to carbon, the guide explains the wider environmental, financial, social, and reputational benefits of NCS investments and how an NCS strategy can be aligned with the individual investor’s business case.  ERM’s Head of Carbon Markets Alexander Cox explains why and how companies should invest in NCS in the video below. When discussing responsible mining of critical minerals, we recommend that companies borrow from sustainability disclosures and commence with good risk management processes such as a focused, asset-level materiality assessment. Through this assessment, companies can identify key stakeholders and their associated needs and expectations. From this understanding, they can make strategic and informed choices regarding which responsible mining frameworks they will utilize. Lastly, companies can identify where there is and is not commonality among initiatives and focus their resources on the actions most important to getting the most value from them.
