When I wrote about my sabbatical a few months ago, I received the loveliest notes. A good chunk of them were about my dog, Franny. I'd briefly mentioned that we'd had to say goodbye to her during my break. This week's column is a love letter to her, and to everyone who's had and lost a pet. It's also for anyone who's ever grown up. It's about our 20s and 30s, those busy years of new jobs and new cities, new partners and new babies. It's about millennials edging toward 40, and staring down what's next. Franny was inextricably intertwined with my career, from our first days together (she curled up in a laundry basket at my feet while I navigated a junior reporting job from our Philadelphia apartment) to my weekly column deadlines. Recently, a man working on our house had observed our days together: Franny snoozing under my desk while I typed, meandering through the background of my video calls. "She's your companion," he said. She really was. https://lnkd.in/eP4dnhyK
I love this, thank you for sharing your story.
Loved this, I just teared up reading and thinking of my two dogs. I hope you'll write a piece on the new puppy, too! :)
You trying to make me cry first thing on a Monday Rachel Feintzeig 😭? But in all seriousness, thank you for taking the loss of a furry loved one seriously. And thank you for sharing your story with us.
Such a meaningful, heartfelt piece. Thank you for writing and sharing it with the world.
You captured it well, Rachel. So hard to say goodbye to that dog and everything she represented.

1wI read your column today and wanted you to know I experienced the same pain when I lost my Sophie six years ago. While the pain subsides, we will always have a whole in our hearts. May the memories of Franny be for a blessing to you always.
