How did I convince my dad to start a DeathTech company? I was the only one in an extended family of 50+ members who was a techie (or was working for someone else 🙈 ) but I have been fortunate enough to be encouraged and supported to have the freedom to take my calls, especially with my career. I did a job as a choice. Achaa lagta tha isliye kiya. And the day I decided to quit after working 7 years at one place and 12 years in total developing code, no one had complaints about why I was quitting. They all had 1 assumption though, I would start an IT consulting firm, hire a few devs in Gujarat and outsource Tech to the world. Sasta-Sundar-Profitable Dhandhaa model. And with the network I had, it was quite possible. But then I dropped the truth bomb called DeathTech. I explained to them the concept of Kustodian.life and why I wanted to do it. And they were SPEECHLESS, complete silence. I could see in their eyes their hearts fighting with their brains ✅ Idea acha hai ❌ But no one has done it yet ✅ It’s a noble cause ❌ But we DO NOT talk about Death in our house ❌ Who will pay for something that they don’t even want to talk about? ✅ How much it would have helped if the family and friends we lost in the last few years had this? ❌ Will he talk about Death 24x7? ❌ IT consulting is so much easier compared to this It took a few awkward days before a ceasefire was established and questions were formed. I listened to all of them but decided to answer them with some questions. You do have an idea (business calculations are easy) about how much approx money I should have, but do you know where it is? - Ok, let me make it easy, forget everything, do you know the details about my bank accounts? - Ok, let’s make it easier, how many bank accounts do I have? ➡ I live 1500 km away from you with a loving wife and a 5-year-old kid ➡ I have worked hard and saved (invested) harder for 12 long years already ➡ I come from a multi-generation business family and openly discuss my finances with you And yet, here we are. If something goes wrong, emotional trauma is separate but what about financial trauma? What about all my hard-earned, tax-payed, well-invested money? With all the Knowledge challenges, Geographical Challenges, Tech and Language barriers, there is no way you can get all that money out. Imagine the situation with everyone else who's not that fortunate. They need this. The world needs this. Trust the voice inside you and back it with action. This voice first came when a four-year-old me saw a distant cousin playing the violin, marking the start of my relationship with the instrument. From the very first moment, I beheld a violin with a magical kind of wonder. And that never changed — not when I was ten, or twenty, or thirty. I was decent in academics; hence my father had high hopes for me. But I never took it seriously. While many of my friends went abroad to pursue their master’s degree, I decided to stay back and learn violin under my guru Shri.S.V.Ramachandran. I had little idea then that this choice would lead me down a completely different path in life. Although I was serious about playing the violin, never had I thought of being a full-time musician. In 2012, while I was at my first job at Indian Additives Limited, I met Neeraj Arya while performing on the streets of Mumbai as part of the non-profit Natural Streets for Performing Arts (NSPA) that promotes music at public promenades. Arya and I started performing as a duo with a guitar and a violin, laced with Kabir’s dohas and sakhis. This led to the formation of Kabir Café, a neo-folk band performing the verses of Kabir, the 15th-century mystic. From performing over 800 concerts to being empanelled with Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Kabir Cafe not only allowed me to travel across 14 countries but also helped me experience diverse art forms across India. It was disheartening to learn that many such art forms are dying now because the masses simply aren't aware of their existence. Music has given me lifelong memories, incredible friends, my wife, and now a purpose. I want to build an organisation that can heal people of their mental and psychological troubles via music. Apart from working in the music healing space, I want to help create awareness of the various folk-art forms across India. For this, I needed to strengthen my business knowledge, leading me to pursue an MBA. After days of preparation amidst performances and erratic travel schedules, I managed to secure a decent GMAT score on my second attempt, allowing me to interview with the esteemed panel at IIM Ahmedabad. Nervous, anxious yet excited, I tried to be as genuine as possible in the interview. The moment I saw the congratulatory note on the portal, I re-logged in to double-check, in disbelief, with tears rolling down. There is one Doha from Kabir that has stayed with me through ups and downs: Dheere Dheere Re Mana, Dheere Sab Kuch Hoye, Mali Seenche So Ghara, Ritu Aaye Phal Hoye I strongly believe that good things come to you at the right time. This may not be a very popular opinion, but I need to put this out there. I’ve noticed an increasing number of young kids entering the workforce, who favour opportunities that allow remote working. While work from home was great in many ways, until the pandemic lasted, the invaluable experiences & growth opportunities that come from being physically present in a real-world work environment, can’t be ignored. As someone who owes his growth to having learned from people I looked up to, having built real relationships at work & absorbing so much from a culture of creativity, here’s why I think the younger generation needs to work in an office environment. Learning curve - Working alongside a team & experienced professionals, especially ones who’re willing to mentor you, gives you access to learning that virtual interactions won’t replicate. The opportunity to observe, learn from & engage with seasoned pros will accelerate your growth & success. Working with director #Priyadarshan Sir was a milestone in my career as the time I spent observing him at work & chatting with him was a game changer for me. Real relationships - In an office, you interact with people from diverse backgrounds, are forced to view things from other perspectives & learn to deal with disagreements. I built a great bond with the likes of Salman & Ajay through common interests. We don’t work together as much anymore, yet the bond remains. I can’t imagine having built relationships like these, if I knew them through a screen or met them twice a year. You need to build bonds. Even if you feel like you don’t need to, over the course of your life, these relationships will see you through the hard times. Dealing with pressure - Working from the office will give you the taste of real pressure, in a way that remote work won’t fully capture. It is in this real environment that you’ll learn to deal with stress, see how big decisions are made & adapt to changing circumstances. Without this conditioning, you’re unlikely to learn much about resilience & the will to survive. Seasoned directors like Rohit Shetty, or technicians like the great Sabu Cyril wouldn’t have achieved what they have if they spent their early years attending planning & pre production meetings remotely! While remote work is convenient & offers balance, it's important to realise that the benefits of working from the office outweigh these conveniences, especially for the youngsters. The richness of physical interactions, the joy of sharing experiences & the transformative powers of learning from others will benefit you more than some of the things you’ll miss out because you’re not #WFH. I hope reading this might make making this decision easy for those who need to! I am planning to offer a Programme: "Understanding Bhagavad Gita: A Journey Towards Leadership Excellence" for managers in July 2023. As the programme is offered in my personal capacity, it will be absolutely free. Participants would be required only to buy a copy of Bhagavad Gita from any book store. However, there will be no certificate from the Institute. The programme is purely based on lessons from Bhagavad Gita on following themes: Understanding Self, Values, Purpose, the Lord, Mentoring, Staffing, Leadership, Decision Making and blissful life. Eventually parents/elders got tired of bickering and finally agreed to buy them say one toy or both toys & kept them quiet. Learn The art of WAR from kids... If a kid asked his parents/elders directly about buying a toy, they may/may not have have agreed upon it to buy you that toy, why not trick parents/elders here? Now, their aunty of kids comes in & displays their toys to the whole residential society & explains them how they fought, how their parents bought them toys... And their neighbor decided to start selling toys outside their house & puts a board outside the house which says that ᵀᵒʸˢ ᵃᵛᵃᶦˡᵃᵇˡᵉ ʰᵉʳᵉ ᵗᵒ ᵐᵃᶦⁿᵗᵃᶦⁿ ᵖᵉᵃᶜᵉ ᵃᵗ ʰᵒᵐᵉ! And this goes everyday...
