The Blood and Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy team at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center recently celebrated a big milestone – 3,000 patients treated since the program offered the first transplants in South Carolina in 1987. Dr. Michelle Hudspeth, director of Adult and Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, said the quickening pace of transplants shows both the expansion of treatment options and the dedication of the BMT and Cellular Therapy team to bringing this therapy to as many patients as possible. https://lnkd.in/egVHzGFH

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that one in nine children in the United States between the ages of 3 and 17 has received a diagnosis of ADHD. “There were so many moving parts, and everyone helped out to make this happen. And then we had the teamwork in the operating room between our surgical teams, anesthesia teams and perfusion teams to take two complex patients to the operating room in a very short period of time and get great surgical outcomes.” Two children received heart transplants at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital on the same day, a rare feat made possible by a team that has grown in size and strength over the past several years. https://lnkd.in/dVz2HCss

South Carolina Pediatric Burn Center care team members participated in the Charleston Memorial Stair Climb this past Saturday at the North Charleston Coliseum to #neverforget and pay tribute to the 412 First Responders lost on 9/11. This event is held annually the same week of the Charleston 9 anniversary to honor and recognize local first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Thank you to our first responders who put their lives on the line daily to serve their communities.

An estimated 2,000 babies are born with sickle cell disease (SCD), the most common inherited blood disorder, annually in the United States. It is a life-limiting disease that affects all parts of the body, causing multi-system complications that often result in life-threatening infections, stroke and organ damage. Recently, the Pediatric Orthopaedics team held a casting workshop at Summey Medical Pavilion to give care team members further education in casting techniques and skills to better serve patients and families.
