South Carolina Pediatric Burn Center care team members participated in the Charleston Memorial Stair Climb this past Saturday at the North Charleston Coliseum to #neverforget and pay tribute to the 412 First Responders lost on 9/11. This event is held annually the same week of the Charleston 9 anniversary to honor and recognize local first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Thank you to our first responders who put their lives on the line daily to serve their communities.

Families are confused by palliative care because we (the collective we) keep referring to it as end-of-life care, and the messaging is 95% about planning for death instead of the quality of LIFE being lived. The quotable Shawshank Redemption rings loudly: "Get busy living, or get busy dying." The term palliative is not approachable for understanding... I'd love to see a rebrand to medically-complex care, or something to that effect. Painting all kids on the severe neurological impact spectrum as imminently dying, when many of them live long, high-quality lives does a disservice to their dignity and personhood. We must be careful with the intention and unintended impact of messaging if we want to build a better comprehensive approach to caring for medically complex children and their families. Care planning, considerations for advanced directives, succession planning, and financial planning are all very important considerations, but let's not lose focus of the terms LIVING and LIFE. #PediatricPalliativeCare #SoapboxoftheDay #QualityofLife

Is there a more dedicated Wingman than a Caregiver? Caregivers are the Wingmen who often stay in the background, until it's time to go to bat for their Warrior, and then they come battle-ready. Spouses, parents, siblings, partners, children, friends...they all carry the title of a Caregiver and hold different responsibilities and roles for their service-member loved one. Nonetheless, these individuals go beyond a dictionary definition of caregiver with the amount of attention, emotion and courage it takes to face the uncertainties daily life can bring. AFW2 values Caregivers, and equips them with the variety of support programs, services and activities to ensure they maintain their own health. But, the best support we offer is the peer support they gain by being part of the program and attending CARE Events. Learn more about the AFW2 Caregiver support program https://lnkd.in/gAvDDyYu

One of DAV’s critical policy goals for 2024 is to advocate for the VA to provide a full spectrum of long-term care options for service-disabled and aging veterans. The VA can achieve this by: 1. Increasing veterans’ access to long-term care 2. Expanding VA community living centers and state veterans homes 3. Funding home and community-based care services 4. Address problems with eligibility criteria for family caregivers Learn more about DAV’s critical policy goals at http://dav.la/CPG2024.

What is Catholic Community Health? Did you know that Villa St. Francis, Home Care, and Hospice is all under one umbrella called called Catholic Community Health. Watch this powerful video of how it all started in 1945.
75 years ago, Bishop Paul Schulte had a vision for a Catholic home for the elderly where those with meager resources could spend their elder years being cared for — mind, body, and soul. Today, that mission is carried forward by the hands of the team members and volunteers at Catholic Community Health hospice, home care, and Villa St. Francis skilled nursing, serving seniors in our community regardless of their financial means. Learn more about the history of our Catholic continuum of care, and the impact it is making throughout our Archdiocese, in the video we shared at this year's Villa Fall Ball.

In case you missed it: Saint Joseph London received a $40,000 grant from WHAS Crusade for Children, Inc. to help improve infant care within the emergency department. The grant will fund the purchase of Panda iRes warmers, which are critical in providing up-to-date monitoring and treatment for infants needing immediate specialty care. "We see approximately 32,000-33,000 patients a year," said John Yanes, president, Saint Joseph London. "So, certainly, having this equipment further allows us to treat those patients who really need the care."
