"By 2030, around $10.6tn of wealth will have been transferred between the generations in the US, $3.5tn in Europe and $2.8tn in Asia." So much change happening in the family office space right now as Boomers retire/die. That pace of change is only going to accelerate. More than £100bn is now inherited and gifted in the UK each year. That number has been doubling every 20 years. 70% of wealthy families lose their wealth by the second generation, 90% by the third. https://lnkd.in/eAUbNKhd

Michael Jackson do you have the source for this??? "70% of wealthy families lose their wealth by the second generation, 90% by the third." It is a key bit of info to rebate the tiresome neosocialist old song that wealth remains forever on top unless there is some kind of revolution....

It’s not lost, their kids „invested“ it in Lamborghinis and Champagne 😉

It's a transfer through a cheese cloth of inflation, taxes, increased costs of living and living longer, starting families later, differences in values and ideas of success and disagreements/litigation amongst heirs. Those families that buck this trend, start preparing, discussing and transferring early and start to build a team around the goal of transfer of assets and responsibilities. Or they give it all to charity.

Median boomer wealth is c $200,000. After taxes it’s a welcome inheritance but unlikely to be life changing. Mean boomer wealth is c. $1.5m but that’s a misleading figure as the handful of big fish drag up the numbers and they are likely to have professional advisors mitigating the riches to rags trendline. There might be a stimulating effect to the economy but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Guess a large portion of that wealth is the market value of residential real-estate. With fertility rates in decline globally (even in poor countries) the replacement cohort inheriting that wealth is going to get smaller and smaller in coming decades. if new household formations stall. the market value of that real estate might be in for a surprise. Happening in China in real time, given years of oversupply and dwindling youth population cohort!

Wow, those numbers are mind-blowing 🤯! It really puts into perspective how important it is for us to get smart about money - and not just making it, but keeping it in the family too. I've seen friends dive into investing in startups or getting savvy with estate planning super early on. It's like, if we're not talking about money at dinner tables, we're setting up for that 90% loss by gen three. Time to break the taboo and start learning from each other!

With the 40% inheritance tax in the UK, you can expect that wealth to disappear even more quickly. State sanctioned robbery.

To any boomers, or their gen x / millennial successors, reflecting on this and unsure what to do... let's talk.
