"That is my dream for our country - a melting pot of different measurements that will make Europeans throw little tantrums. In short, a land of liberty!" Happy 4th of July to Americans everywhere!!! 💥 💥 🇺🇸 🦅 💥 💥 Fwiw, this SNL skit was one of their best in years. 👏🏻
I’m 1/3rd through Andro Linklater’s “Meauring America” which focuses on land measurement/surveying and land ownership in the development of the country. It’s a great read and highlights all different types of measurement (money, goods, etc) that came into play during the “early years.” Less humorous than SNL, but highly recommend.
Call me facty but 1777 was a bit early - The French Revolution (1789–99) enabled France to reform its many outdated system of various local weights and measures. In 1790, Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord proposed a new system based on natural units to the French National Assembly, aiming for global adoption. With the United Kingdom not responding to a request to collaborate in the development of the system, the French Academy of Sciences established a commission to implement this new standard alone, and in 1799, the new system was launched in France.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_system
Renaming “football” to be called “soccer” was the ultimate form of disrespect. 😂😂
"It's interesting how cultural unity often defies traditional measurements of success."
"you asked about measuring temperature" "I really didn't" 😂
Separated by a common language, but clearly united in the use of nonsensical weights and measures. And general innate craziness…the USA and the UK.
And, in Canada, we will use the metric system.....except when we don't.
Whoever set UK general election day today had a similar sense of humour

1wFFS was trying to think of something to post on my first ever Independence Day in the US, and this would’ve been perfect. The week I arrived someone showed me this and I cacked so hard. I’ve been sharing it with Americans ever since. Every time I need to go to Home Depot and take measurements before I leave the house, “nobody knows” immediately springs into my head.
