#CarbonMarkets, when done right, offer a powerful means to finance much-needed climate solutions now and in the long term, while promoting transparent, inclusive and equitable economic development. As Amanda Leland shared, the White House’s announcement signals the #UnitedStates government’s determination to scale high integrity voluntary carbon markets (VCM), also marks a high-level endorsement of #CarbonCredits and their role in driving private sector finance to support global emissions-cutting efforts. After years of Environmental Defense Fund’s efforts, #China launched its national #EmissionTradingSystem (ETS) in 2021. Today, China’s carbon market is the largest in the world; however, it currently oversees only the country’s power sector — responsible for more than 40% of national and 12% of global CO2 emissions. We are working closely with partners to support China’s ETS to include more high-emitting industries and eventually cover about 70% of China’s carbon emissions. We’re also supporting the new voluntary carbon market that was launched in January 2024, which channels financing to initiatives that benefit the climate, ecosystems, sustainable development, and people’s livelihoods in China. #India publicly announced the formation of its first domestic, regulated carbon market in 2023. The government requested EDF’s confidential advice in the early stages of the market’s conceptualisation because of our long track record of support for developing carbon markets in the US and China, along with our reputation for results in India. We conducted research on critical building blocks of the carbon market and helped shape policies that guide the market’s development. Our goal is to ensure that the #IndianCarbonMarket generates a high-quality carbon trading ecosystem that provides accountability and incentives to drive emissions reductions in line with India’s goals.

April was a staggeringly hot month for our colleagues and partners in India. Average temperatures in eastern India were the highest in recorded history, and, in New Delhi, temperatures averaged 15% above normal. This #ExtremeHeat is not only hard on people, it is hard on livestock. In a column in The Times Of India, Nikhil Goveas and Dr. Abhinav Gaurav discuss how heat is projected to reduce milk production in India by 25% by 2085, which would be devastating to livelihoods and nutrition as dairy is the source of nourishment and livelihoods for millions in India. We are thrilled to announce that Starbucks and Clover Sonoma have joined the Dairy Methane Action Alliance (DMAA). This brings the global footprint of DMAA to eight companies with over $230 billion in annual global sales. Since launching DMAA with six global dairy companies at COP28, we have helped to provide guidance for how participating companies can measure and disclose their supply chain methane emissions and begun evaluating implementation barriers that could impede progress.    Companies cannot afford to waste a moment in adopting more strategic and prioritized climate action to make food production sustainable for years to come – the continued ability of our food system to support a growing population depends on it. By translating science into actionable guidance for companies, Environmental Defense Fund can support the sector-wide transformation that we know we need to see in the next decade.

Our MethaneSAT will soon orbit the Earth to track and measure global #MethaneEmissions, the fastest and most efficient way to slow global warming. The satellite data, combined with Google’s AI and infrastructure mapping, will create a better understanding for how to mitigate methane emissions and stabilize the climate. 🛰
