‘Not wearing sindoor sign of refusal to accept marriage’ –reported Hindustan Times on June 30, 2020. This shows total lack of consumer awareness about the harmful effects of sindoor on the health of women and children! Sindoor, lipstick and kajal are major sources of lead poisoning in women. Children and pregnant women are particularly susceptible to lead poisoning. The foetus of pregnant woman is gravely affected by lead exposure since lead can pass through the placenta directly into the baby. Lead is also linked to infertility and miscarriage. WHO has identified lead as one of the chemicals of major public health concern. Philanthropy in India is evolving, with UHNIs playing a pivotal role in sustainable development. A recent report by Accelerate India Philanthropy (AIP) and BCG, top UHNI philanthropists contribute to environmental and sustainability initiatives. As an ecoentrepreneur, I urge more HNIs and companies to prioritize nature conservation. While other social causes are crucial, a healthy environment provides the foundation for all life—clean food, air, and water are essential for every living being. Without this, no amount of education or other social initiatives can make a lasting impact. Are Indian Financial Institutions Ready for the Climate Transition? 🌍 The latest CDP report reveals significant gaps and opportunities for Indian financial institutions (FIs) in their climate transition plans. Key Highlights: ▪ 94% of Indian FIs report having board-level oversight of climate transition plans. ▪Only 27% have plans aligned with a 1.5°C world. ▪A staggering INR 1,007 billion in potential financial losses from climate-related risks has been identified, but this is likely underestimated. Did you know only one Indian financial institution has set a target to cut emissions from their investments? It's a major gap in tackling climate risks. Indian FIs need to follow global best practices to thrive in a net-zero future. That means making solid plans to transition to green finance and working with companies to slash emissions. With 💸 INR 1,151 billion in potential financial opportunities, there’s a compelling case for Indian FIs to lead the way in sustainable finance. So, what's the play? Regulators must make climate transition plans mandatory. FIs should lay out their strategies and manage climate risks across their portfolios.

Industrial policies have traditionally been government-led policy interventions, something that everybody presumed had gone out of fashion. Surprise, surprise! Every country across the globe (including the advanced economies) is now crafting a new industrial policy, ostensibly to boost manufacturing activity and employment but also to help domestic industry compete globally. India also has a putative industrial policy which has yielded mixed results. The larger question remains: how efficacious are these new industrial policies? V Anantha Nageswaran, Chief Economic Advisor of India, calls on industry to reciprocate deregulation efforts with concrete action on improving the product quality and customer service! He reminded corporates of their responsibility to the consumers. I have personally experienced significant deterioration in the product quality and customer service of both old-established and new-age companies. I understand some of that comes due to unsustainable pressure on the companies to keep on growing volumes and profit by reducing cost. Less cost not just makes it affordable, but also forces customers to replace things more often and hence increases volume for the companies! How can we better engage consumers during #PlasticFreeJuly and similar initiatives? Yesterday evening, I reflected on India's first #ZeroWaste book, which I co-authored with Sahar Mansoor while at Bare Necessities Zero Waste Solutions . Since then, I've been dedicated to driving initiatives that promote circular, sustainable practices within industries in Australia. These efforts are essential for transitioning away from unsustainable materials. However, we must remember that clear, simple language is crucial for involving those outside the sustainability sector. Climate change is more visible recently than ever before in terms of increase in temperature, erratic rainfall, rising sea level, melting of glaciers and frequent occurrences of extreme events such as drought and flood. Climate change has direct impact on agricultural production and agricultural activities also has impact on climate change through generation of GHG. In India, impact of climate change is more on small and marginal farmers who constitute more than four fifth of the farmers in India, thus increasing vulnerability. The climate change through its impact on agriculture and developmental activities can reverse the progress of humanity to achieve sustainable development goals set by United Nations. There has been efforts in India to build resilience in agriculture in India through various adaptation and mitigation measures including adoption of climate smart agriculture to ensure food security and to achieve sustainable development. To understand the impact of climate change on agriculture and the current adaptation and mitigation measures, there is a need of further research in these areas In India along with actions. The question arises: Q1: What are the trends and patterns of research in relation to climate resilient and sustainable agriculture in India? Q2: What are the common themes across the research studies related to climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture in India? What are the major research findings across these studies within these common themes? Q3: What are potential future research directions in the field of climate resilient and sustainable agriculture in India? Glad to share my co-authored research paper on 'Climate change and resilience, adaptation, and sustainability of agriculture in India: A bibliometric review' recently published on #Heliyon journal to answer all the above questions. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 🌟 Strategic planning and mentoring by V2I are reshaping Anugrah to better meet the needs of those with disabilities, emphasizing skill development, empowerment, and community acceptance. 🏡 Anugrah's comprehensive approach includes in-home care, learning centers, a carpentry workshop for vocational training, and prosthetics and orthotics services, directly impacting over 120 families. 📚 The program is pivotal in training local community members, steering towards becoming a professional medical training institution in a province where an estimated 600,000 to 800,000 people suffer from disabilities with minimal care available. Reality Check: UP - Provide Speedy Justice to Consumers Dr Jayashree Gupta, President, Consumers India had visited State Consumer Commission, UP at Lucknow on 12 February, 2024 and held discussions with Mr Justice Vikas Saxena, Member (Judicial) and Ms Geeta Shrivastava, Senior Administrative Officer and other officials of the State Commission. Major concerns emanating from the visit have been shared with the Chief Secy and others concerned in the Govt of UP, along with some suggestions to safeguard interests of consumers. It has been, interalia, suggested that Presidents and Members of Consumer Commissions need to be made aware of their duties as well as powers vested in them as per CP Act through effective training programmes. Special arrangements need to be made to deal with huge pendency from earlier years. This lack of transparency undermines the entire purpose of these reports! Here in India, sustainability is critical for a future-proof economy. A recent report by CRISIL Limited estimates India's green capex (capital expenditure) to reach a staggering ₹6 lakh crore (US$80 billion) by 2027. It's heartening to witness a growing number of nonprofits exploring the Social Stock Exchange (SSE) as a transformative means of raising capital. In a space where securing funding is a constant challenge for many NGOs, this move marks a significant step towards sustainability and impact. The potential of SSEs to revolutionise fundraising for NGOs cannot be overstated. By providing access to a broader investor base, SSEs offer a promising alternative to the traditional avenues of fundraising. Indeed, SSEs serve as a catalyst for change by diversifying funding sources, thereby reducing the reliance on unpredictable contributions. This financial stability enables NGOs to focus more on their core missions and less on financial uncertainties. Moreover, with access to capital markets facilitated by SSEs, NGOs can expand their operations and extend their reach to more beneficiaries. This scalability enhances their ability to create lasting social change on a larger scale. Yet, despite the immense potential SSEs hold, many NGOs remain hesitant to explore this avenue. Whether due to apprehensions about the unknown or a lack of understanding about SSE operations, overcoming these barriers is crucial to unlocking the full potential of this innovative funding mechanism. Okay, so Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has released its first Climate Budget Report for the fiscal year 2024-25! I think this is a pivotal step towards achieving Mumbai's ambitious climate goals outlined in the Mumbai Climate Action Plan (MCAP). This report integrates climate considerations into the city's financial planning and governance. As a quick summary, here's how I perceive the report: 🔸 Budget Allocation: INR 10,224.24 crores dedicated to climate-relevant activities, making up 32.18% of the total capital expenditure budget. 🔸 Urban Flooding and Water Resource Management: The majority of the climate budget is allocated to urban flood and water resource management, amounting to ₹9,707.97 crores, reflecting the city's priority in addressing climate resilience. 🔸 Sustainable Waste Management: ₹262.16 crores. 🔸 Urban Greening and Biodiversity: ₹177.84 crores. 🔸 Air Quality Management: ₹35.38 crores. 🔸 Net-Zero Emissions Target: To achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with interim targets of 30% reduction by 2030, 44% by 2040, and complete net-zero by 2050, based on 2019 emission levels. Other Key Highlights: 🔹 Development of waste-to-energy projects at Deonar Dumping Ground. 🔹 Implementation of solar panel systems across various municipal buildings. 🔹 Upgradation of the stormwater drainage system to build flood-resilient infrastructure. 🔹 Introduction of eco-friendly cremation systems and organic waste convertors in municipal markets.
