Last year, I had the privilege of participating in Grow Asia Academy for Sustainable Investing. It was an extremely fascinating experience, but largely theoretical as many of the theories covered seemed difficult for me to apply, given the types of investments we typically made. However, it wasn't until my recent visit to Western Australia that everything clicked for me as I saw how these theories could be put into practise. The company that helped me do that was Fremantle Seaweed. Standing on the beach in Fremantle, listening to Chris De Cuyper describe his company and the various considerations they had to address while laying the foundations of his new seaweed farm, greatly enhanced my understanding of the theories that I learn. It made me appreciate concepts like land tenure, environmental impact monitoring, and stakeholder mapping in a more practical light. While our previous investments were largely tech-based and less focused on these considerations. However, as our investment mandate evolves in the coming years, this short walk on the beach will remain a memorable reminder of the types of investments we aspire to make in the future. Attending the Evoke Ag conference in Perth was a refreshing change from the usual conference experiences. Unlike the typical 3 to 4-day affairs, Evoke Ag was condensed into a concise 2-day schedule, which I found incredibly impactful. This brevity ensured that every session was relevant and to the point, without any sense of being stretched thin. What really set Evoke Ag apart was its flexibility. Alongside the main conference, there were numerous side events available for attendees to tailor their experience. This meant that I could select sessions that aligned with my interests and skip those that didn't resonate with me. The ability to customize my agenda made the conference feel uniquely personalized and engaging. I particularly enjoyed the deep dive into the apiary industry, as well as the Innovation and Tech Summit and the Aquaculture Conference. These additional events not only expanded my knowledge but also allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals in these specific fields. I believe that the format of Evoke Ag, with its blend of a concise main conference and diverse side events, should serve as a model for future conferences. I can only imagine the level of planning and coordination required to pull off such a seamless experience for attendees. A big thank you to Simon Tarmo, AgriFutures evokeAG and Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development for their hard work and dedication in making Evoke Ag such a memorable event. Fishes have always held my fascination - from fishing to fish keeping, they played a pivotal role in drawing me into the agrifood industry. Often, discussions around fisheries focus on environmental and sustainability aspects, inadvertently sidelining the human factor. Beyond improving fishing practices for better yield and output, it's crucial to address the well-being and dignity of the workers in these fisheries. Innovation shouldn't be limited to boosting productivity; it should also aim to enhance the lives and dignity of those contributing to the industry. I do not have all the answers, but I believe in the power of collaboration and shared ideas. In light of the challenges we've faced as a Group recently, it was a good change of pace to witness The Trendlines Group receiving the Most Transparent Award from the Securities Investors Association (Singapore). This award is a testament to our commitment to build trust and foster accountability with our LPs, shareholders and portfolios companies alike. In the immortal words of Captain Kirk: There's no such thing as the unknown- only things temporarily hidden, temporarily not understood. When we first raised the idea of having a novel food tasting session as part of our inaugural FTIC Foodtech Startup Challenge, we were confronted with the great unknown. Trying to get approval for 10 companies to showcase their food and offer it for the masses was something that we had no idea how to do. It took us many calls, many emails, many huddles and countless back and forths, but I am glad that we stuck through it. The road to success wasn't easy. But the outcome? Truly remarkable! Our startups set a new standard with next-level, on-point food offerings while upholding the highest levels of safety and regulatory compliance. "You're in too deep now!" (David C.Y. Chen, 2023) The past four months have been a deep dive into the world of sustainable investing. I've had the privilege of immersing myself in intensive discussions and captivating events with industry partners and thought leaders, all centered around driving sustainable financing practices. The ASEAN Academy on Responsible Investing by Grow Asia provided an all-encompassing experience, covering everything from ESG integration to impact measurement to small holder interactions. This academy has equipped me with the language and tools to effectively communicate the importance of ESG considerations in my role, without compromising the financial bottom line. It has provided a comprehensive framework to navigate and assess material ESG factors relevant to my business, empowering me to seamlessly incorporate these ideas into our portfolio strategy. Undoubtedly, the academy demanded a significant time commitment, and I won't deny all my grumbling along the way. Juggling weekly coursework, facetime sessions, and a final project took up alot more time than I imagined. However, it was the networking that truly shone through and made it all worth it. Building connections with like-minded professionals, passionate change-makers, and even finding some trusted drinking buddies, has been an invaluable part of this journey.
